I sold my drag boat just before Thanksgiving. The racing I'm pursuing now is done where there is no water left. The boat was not getting much attention. It found a new home up in WA. It was a happy ending, he'd followed that hull's progress back in the 80's and always wanted it. I got a good price too. I've joined a team doing land speed trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats. I met them 3 years ago. I had never been to Speed Week on the salt so that was my first time. I just happened to wander into their pit. They had problems with their fuel injection system the way it looked. How convenient for me! So I fixed their fuel injection (444 car) and the next morning they set a new record around 331MPH as I recall. I've been invited back ever since and we've pushed the record up three more times. Now it's at 343.301. This is for a small block Chevy on gas. We roasted the engine at the World Finals last year; we were trying for the fuel record at 20% nitro. Since there were already a couple "Rick" types in the group, they call me Ricco. Around here that's a common nickname for Rick and I already respond to it. <shrug> A year and a half ago I suggested that if they fit the car with a data acquisition system I would support it. So I'm doing all the engine tuning and data acquisition/interpretation now. This year, for all my efforts, I'm being offered some seat time. With any luck I'll get licensed on the salt by the end of the season. Should be LOTS of fun! Can't WAIT! http://www.teamvesco.com/racing2010/speedweek.html These guys also have a turbine powered, 4 wheel drive streamliner (111 car) that still holds the worldwide record for the fastest wheel driven car; 458MPH. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYklVBF25OQ&feature=player_embedded The 111 was driven by the late Don Vesco, the only person in history to hold land speed records in both car and motorcycle at the same time. He passed away in 2002. This being the 10 year anniversary of the record run, we had sponsors lined up to do a repeat. (We displayed the car in the lobby of the SEMA show in Vegas last fall.) The original goal was "First to 500". One sponsor backed out so it looks like it'll be next year maybe. Even Jack Rickard is showing some interest in this. Interestingly enough, Ohio State U. has a 300MPH electric streamliner. It's powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, through a 3 phase inverter and into an 800HP electric motor and conventional drive train. They melt 400 lbs of ice cooling it during a single run! LMAO! It's cool. Most pits have a bunch of grease monkeys working on the car. In their pit, it's a bunch of kids with laptops! It's rather quiet when it makes a pass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw6vmy1nPVI Direct any specific follow ups to me personally so the list doesn't get annoyed by this WAY OT subject.
