[WISPA] GA Aircraft Interrupting Microwaves?

2013-04-29 Thread Matt Hoppes
I've got a bizarre one here

Has anyone else ever experienced a GA aircraft flying in front of a
tower and breaking a microwave (in this case RADWin) path long enough to
bring down the link for approximately 10 seconds?

We have a tower that loses connectivity about once or twice a day for
around 10 seconds, and all data points to it being some GA aircraft
taking off from a local field and having a flight path that takes them
right in the RF path of the microwave.

Next calm day one of the local pilots is going to fly a few touch-n-goes
for us to confirm the theory.

Just curious if anyone else has ever encountered this?

Unless one of your sites is right by the airport I would say aircraft are not
the issue.

Re: [WISPA] GA Aircraft Interrupting Microwaves?

2013-04-29 Thread Brett Bonomo
Matt, I have absolutely seen aircraft interrupt a microwave path. This is
actually a fairly common occurance near airports and runways. We've seen
it with helicopters also. There are two likely scenarios; what I would
call 'direct' line of sight (LOS) obstruction where the plane actually
flies into the 1st fresnel zone and 'incidental' where a reflection of the
signal off of the plane causes fading and/or bit errors. The latter is
probably less of a concern and more likely with larger aircraft.

You should be able to map this out. If the plane is literally flying into
the main RF path, it is likely to cause problems. Changing antenna heights
can help, but the exact interception point of any given plane is probably
going to vary slightly.

Off topic, but as interesting is interference from wind turbines. That
topic is getting a lot of attention in the wireless world right now.

[WISPA] maintenance agreements?

2013-04-29 Thread Adam Greene
Hey guys,

We're quoting a customer on some point to point gigabit links (60GHz), and
the equipment vendor mentioned, Don't forget to quote for a maintenance
agreement. This is where our partners really make their money. He called it
a Service Level Agreement. He said it typically includes an annual
maintenance program where you check all the connectors, reapply Teflon spray
on the radome, etc., and offer an hourly rate if they need link
troubleshooting, support, or hardware replacement (assuming the link is
under manufacturer's warranty).

Are other people on the list quoting customers for these? If so, what kinds
of service and/or caveats do you generally include (if you don't mind
sharing)? A template shared off-list would certainly be welcome, but I
understand that may be asking a bit much.

Thanks,

Adam
