Re: [WISPA] Network Neutrality talking points

2017-12-16 Thread Marco Coelho
There is nothing wrong with prioritizing one type of service over another
(VOIP vs FTP). It leads to a better quality of service for the end user.
Where this was going sideways earlier was when the big ISP companies were
going to charge Netflix and Hulu directly if they wanted priority on their
backbones.

[WISPA] What my spies are talking about

2017-01-25 Thread Marco Coelho
Some of my friends at Verizon are talking a major shift in their Fiber
Deployment.
They have decided Fiber to the Home is non practical. They have adopted a
fiber to the pedestal scheme with the last part of the connectivity being
wireless to the home. Details on bands used have not been provided, but
that is apparently their new model. They have sold their copper plant in
Texas to Frontier as a part of this plan. Interesting times.

I've got on old moto ptp400 that has been in service for too long.
Recently ping times through this radio have gone to 200-400ms. I'm not
seeing the throughput that would cause this link to fill up.

A reboot on both ends drops the pings for a while, then they go back up
within 5 minutes.

Any ideas?

[WISPA] FM Radio interference

2016-07-14 Thread Marco Coelho
I have an existing tower that has a FM transmitter on it. I believe they
are just under 10,000 Watts.
Since we have been one that tower, I could never link up Ethernet that runs
up the tower to the equipment on the bottom at 100BT. I've tried ferrite
rings on both ends, all cables are shielded and grounded. Always had to go
to 10BT to get a link.

I moved our radios 35 feet away from the bottom their antennas and still
cannot link at 100BT.

The new radios require 1000BT too use them to full advantage. Ideas?

I'm considering conduit all the way up the tower. I don't want to put
switches at the top.

[WISPA] Users email to support 5.7 band

2014-08-05 Thread Marco Coelho
This is the e-mail we sent to ALL of our users to help support the 5.7 band:
Please send something similar to your users.

Dear argontech.net user,

*END OF RURAL HIGH SPEED INTERNET POSSIBLE*

The FCC has approved a change to the system requirements for the 5.7 GHz
Microwave Radio Bands that we and most other wireless internet service
providers utilize. Within two years these changes will decimate rural
wireless broadband and your internet service. Either service will have to
discontinue, or monthly service costs will be greatly increased. We
presently have a petition to the FCC to change the rules so that we can
continue to use these bands to provide you service.

We strongly urge you to follow the link below and tell the FCC how
important rural broadband is to you. Please *forward this link to everyone
in your address book* so that we may pass the message and save your
service. Under ISP tell them you're with:

*argontech.net http://argontech.net*

http://www.wispa.org/save-rural-broadband-and-unlicensed-wireless-call-to-action

Thank you for your support and help.

Re: [WISPA] iPerf as a Real-World Performance Simulation Tool

2013-11-13 Thread Marco Coelho
To get a real test, you need to run iperf with numerous threads using the
-P parameter. It's the only way to push 1G+
reliably.

mc

On Tue, Nov 12, 2013 at 12:50 PM, Sam w...@csilogan.com wrote:

Has anyone used iPerf before? I'm curious of your thoughts as to the
reliability, and how the results would map to a real-world environment.
For example, a friend was testing some 3.65 radios (which had no
connection to the Internet) using iPerf. Based upon the iPerf results, a
determination was made regarding maximum concurrent users per AP and
maximum aggregate bandwidth capacity of the radio. For the maximum
concurrent users I believe they tested this at several different
download and upload speed for the fictional users.

Having never used iPerf, I don't know if the results from their tests
(which were very poor by the way - much lower than common configurations
of DL/UL rates as well as number of users per AP I've read many of you
describing on these lists) map reasonably to what one would expect from
a given AP, or if they tend to be wonky.

 Thanks,
 Sam

Effective directed EIRP totals are high because they meet the PTP FCC
requirements because of the adaptive beamforming:

 2.4 GHz: 48 dBm
 5 GHz: 49 dBm

 ** **

Those of you smarter than I can probably do the math then to get an idea
of range at various heights. The one example I know from a trusted source
(my engineer) is his getting stable 20mbps with the USB device one mile
away from his house with the BTS mounted on the railing of his 2nd story
porch. I am not sure of his LOS or NLOS condition, but I should assume
mostly LOS to be safe. The beamforming is bi-directional from the CPE up as
well, so that should help the range too.

Thanks for the details Tyson. You are right, that version is the legacy
b/g version with 3 omnis diagonally opposed. That has 450 mbps aggregate
(obviously in top modulation). The new 2450 series are N-based and feature
6 radios. Both the 2.4 and the 5GHz side are 3x3 MIMO. The versions include:

WBSn 2450-S which is a single dual band sector in 120 degrees with 6
antenna elements. I can get you exact H/V details if you want.

WBSn 2450-O which has three diagonally-opposed dual band omnis, again
 with each band 3x3.

 WBSn 2450-SO comes with a single 5 GHz 3x3 120 sector and 3
 diagonally-opposed 2.4 omnis.

Yes John, we have client devices, among them:

Dual Zone Indoor AP. It also beamforms and it is basically a very small
form factor repeater that picks up the outdoor signal and re-broadcasts
indoor. It is a really effective little box.

There is an outdoor CPE as you would expect.

There is also a USB version CPE as well as a desk mount.

I have to check as there may be others.

Max associations on BTSs are 512. All deliver 900 mbps aggregate.

They all do beam adaptive beamforming, which means the antennas target
all the energy to each client and does this on a per packet decision basis.
This helps considerably with interference mitigation. The radios also have
several other patented interference mitigation techniques.

Alvarion improved upon the performance of these radios as well and the
2450 series are the result. All are IP68 (complete submersion down to 3
feet deep) boxes and feel like tanks.

Linksys seem to have a much higher failure rate than the Netgear units.
Netgear routers do pppoe better and more reliably.

Expect to change batteries every 2.5 years if you want to prevent failures,

I caught one guy hanging upside down on a cranes heavy ball 300 ft up

Fired him over the radio. I heard he had since been injured somewhere in

Like I said before, drug test your tower climbers monthly. We let another

Rule of thumb. If it doesn't feel safe, it probably isn't.

While a 20 Mph wind is easy to work in, that same wind would be very
dangerous trying to install a 4 foot parabolic dish.

 Lightning is right out.

Re: [WISPA] Staff Apparel

2011-05-18 Thread Marco Coelho
If you want laundry and repair services also, Unifirst is good.

I dropped them due to cost and the issue with employees forgetting to bring
the uniforms in to be laundered.

Bulk order good shirts / t-shirts and have them silk screened or embroidered
locally. It's probably the cheapest approach.

Have the employees wear blue jeans every day as the bottom part of their
uniform.

You'll probably have better luck finding a small local outfit to do this,
precisely because the big companies usually have large minimum orders.

If you do want to do it all online, try customink.com. Can't vouch for
their embroidery, but I've ordered hundreds of screen-printed T-shirts
through them with no problems. Their Web site they have a minimum embroidery
order of just 6 shirts, and you can mix-and-match.

Re: [WISPA] Possible interference with Alvarion 2.4 / 5.8 GHz

2011-05-05 Thread Marco Coelho
They are pretty far out of band for the two bands you mentioned. I would
bet that no interference will be noticed.
They would have to have some pretty bad radios to get you with harmonics on
the RF side. You may experience some Ethernet issues depending on
separation and your shielding, but I would also bet it would be a non issue.

FM transmitters near 100MHz are like a bullet to the head for Ethernet.

install above our antennas a channel 24 LPTV antenna receiving on 647 MHZ
(channel 43) and transmitting on 533 MHz (channel 24). My question is if the
harmonics could cause any interference to us or could be an issue?

These are the specifications we received from the company:

The transmit power will be 580 watts on TV channel 24 which is 530-536 MHz

The transmitter is heavily filtered with a “stringent mask” to eliminate out
 of band energy. http://louise.hallikainen.org/FCC/FccRules/2010/74/794/

If there are any problems it’s likely due to front end overload of your
equipment. That can be easily resolved with the addition of filters between
 your antenna(s) and receiver(s).

If your 2.4 GHz equipment suffers any interference I’d propose an L-com
 BPF2400A: http://www.l-com.com/item.aspx?id=22046

If your 5.8 GHz equipment is bothered the BPF5800A should eliminate any
 issues: http://www.l-com.com/item.aspx?id=22184

 Any comment will be welcome.

 Thanks.

This would allow for your average utube streaming of a small video, but kill

IP Tables and a dynamic script should be able to do this.

The only thing you've got to remember, is that if in the future you have a

hardware as well.

Glad it worked. I'll keep it in the toolkit.

I got several of each, but I ended up using channel 1 mostly. When I
put that puppy in, I got like 40 dB less noise on the channels I
didn't want, and I also could not even hear other APs when I moved the
radio to channels 2-11 (there is that much isolation in the filter).

Now throughput is much smoother and higher. Before I put these in,
bandwidth would be slow and come in spurts (as evidenced by various
throughput tools like iperf and online speed tests).

Re: [WISPA] A quick primer on USF

I live in one of these rural coop areas. I bet the rates here are much

workers make twice to three times the hourly prevailing wage in this area,
but on par with what a telco worker would make in say New Jersey. I think
something is flawed in this? They are supposed to be non-profit and they
making so much money, instead of giving it back to the coop members, they
just give everyone raises and bonuses. I would like to know just how much
they get in USF in my area.

Oh, voice? Well, the real scandal of USF is that the ILEC-ETC is
allowed to do practically anything so long as it's useful for
voice. They can build Fiber to the Ranch, for $20,000+/home (CapEx)
or more, or $1000/month per sub (though they propose making it harder
to get $250/line/mo), if it also delivers voice, *even if* they
already have copper to the ranch *and* an unlicensed WISP. Check out
Border to Border in Texas. So USF does fund broadband; it just does
it indirectly, by letting them build a broadband-ready network with
subsidy money. The ISP they run across it is then incidental, not
*directly* subsidized, but if the wire or fiber is already there, how
much does more it cost to drop on broadband Internet? Thanks to this
policy, many rural ILECs have better broadband coverage than
  unsubsidized Bells.

This is the one that really gets under my skin. I compete against it every
day and they get BIP/BTOP funding in addition. I think they need to FORCE
every company getting funding from the government or USF to either separate
their ISP/telco activities and resell to any ISP at the same rate as their
ISP, or be FORCED to open their network for other ISP's to use at a
competitive rate. I guess you could say I would like to see it got back to
 the Computer Inquiries.

 Nice explanation Fred.

Subject: [WISPA] A quick primer on USF

First off, this last thread's title was offensive, so I changed
it. The current Administration is not doing much that previous ones
didn't do, and that's the problem. The FCC sees the spectrum as a
source of revenue (auctions), and Congress sees the FCC as a source
of subsidy money to rural states.

USF exists because the Telecom Act requires it. USF replaced an even
uglier system wherein rural telcos charged really really high
switched access per minute rates to LD carriers at either end of the
call. VoIP would have killed that anyway... so now there are
  explicit cash subsidies.

Let's set aside the smaller parts of USF (Schools Libraries, Rural
Health Care, and Low Income) and focus on the one on the table now,
High Cost Support. This is the one that gets the bulk of the tax
money anyway. The statutory requirement is that rural telephone
rates be comparable (not identical) to urban ones. So if it really
costs $100/month to provide telephone service in East Overshoe, then
the East Overshoe Telephone Cooperative is entitled to USF to let
  them hold down the rate.

But it's a lot more complicated than that. Cost is averaged across a
study area, which is in general the operating territory of one
(historic, pre-merger) telephone company in one state. So South
Central Bell- Mississippi is one study area, and South Central Bell-
Tennessee is another. Verizon has at least two study areas in
California, though, one ex-Contel and one ex-GTE. CenturyTel has a
heap of them all over the place, as does TDS.

The point of averaging across a study area is that low-cost urban
areas cross-subsidize high-cost rural ones. So Qwest in Omaha is
supposed to subsidize Qwest in the rural parts of Nebraska. Thus the
big recipients are the small telephone companies who do not have
urban areas. That would be bad enough, but a small telephone company
typically has a separate corporate structure, including IT, CS, etc.,
which supports very few subscribers. So the OpEx per subscriber can
be really high too, because small telcos are inefficient. If TDS or
CenturyTel buys them, they often keep the study areas separate...
cost goes down but the money still flows! (The pending NPRM does
however at least open the issue of merging study areas.) And the
Bells, especially Qwest/USWest, have sold off a lot of rural
areas. So they have lowered their average cost. This doesn't lower
their rate, though, because they don't get USF anyway, and they are
on price caps, not rate of return, so they keep their rates and raise
their margins. The rural chains that buy the rural turf

I have written in a more eloquent way to various of my congresspeople,
however, this was more of a quick rant on a yahoo message board. I am a

I don't feel that the majority of those at the wheel at the moment have a

wispa is a good beginning for our industry, but there are some steps that
would really help make some changes and mature this industry.. I'll try to

Sorry for the OT post. I thought some might be interested.

Confirming what a few have reported this evening: in an action

  unprecedented in

Internet history, the Egyptian government appears to have ordered
 service

providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet.

  Critical

European-Asian fiber-optic routes through Egypt appear to be unaffected

  for now.

But every Egyptian provider, every business, bank, Internet cafe,

  website,

school, embassy, and government office that relied on the big four

  Egyptian ISPs

for their Internet connectivity is now cut off from the rest of the

  world. Link

Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and all their

  customers and

partners are, for the moment, off the air.

At 22:34 UTC (00:34am local time), Renesys observed the virtually

  simultaneous

withdrawal of all routes to Egyptian networks in the Internet's global

  routing

table. Approximately 3,500 individual BGP routes were withdrawn, leaving

  no

valid paths by which the rest of the world could continue to exchange

  Internet

traffic with Egypt's service providers. Virtually all of Egypt's
 Internet

  addresses are now unreachable, worldwide.

[WISPA] something to watch out for with genset

2011-01-10 Thread Marco Coelho
Since the weather had turned nasty here in Texas, I thought I'd test out the
Generator to ensure it would do it's job. It fired up just fine, but one of
the exhaust flaps that keep water out of the exhaust had frozen shut with a
large clump of ice on top to boot (counter weight). This would have
eventually fouled the plugs on one side had I not checked. Running for 5
minutes did not clear it.

Yet something else for us to look for.

The issue is not so much GIG-E to GIG-E. It's when you have GiG-E to

No seriously, we had many power related problem this past summer, more than
the agreegate of the entire rest of our time in business.
Its hard to say why for sure... Whether its because a lot of the gear was
in place for the past 7 years, and it was time (EOL) or whether the weather
was changing for the worse. The storms were bad.(maybe global warming). Then
I started thinking, maybe it was just becoming time for the power company,
after reading arcticles that they were not adequately maintaining their
 infrastructure.

But regardless of the cause, as one's company grows, it become more and
more important to stay on top of power protection and adding redundancy.
BAsed on the severity of electrical attacks we've seen, the single basic
SOHO APC solution doesn't cut it any more.

I've had some cases where multiple power protection devices in-line all got
compromised. For example, a highend battery inverter, a standard cabnet UPS
downstream, and router power supply in the rack all get killed at once, and
that was with an additional high KA surge arrester in the panel itself, and
everything common grounded. What else could I have done?

In one of those rare moments when I have time to think, I wondered what
kinds of high-angle rescue capabilities the fire departments around us had.

Here's what I found out: NONE
The closest high-angle rescue units are in at least 1 hour away. If you
have an injured climber, 1 hour may be too much.

We now have 1000' of 5/8 rescue rope, and a Fisk Descender in house. We
are also actively working with a couple of the local fire departments to get
 them and us properly certified.

Just a thought as many of us work out in the sticks! You don't want an

[WISPA] PPPoE Termination point -- NOC or Tower

2010-11-10 Thread Marco Coelho
We're at another growth milestone and are evaluating some network changes.
We are planning on doubling our network footprint this next quarter.

Currently, we terminate all PPPoE connections at a main NOC. This has shown
some limitations as time has gone on. They are manageable, but it would be
better not having to deal with.

We are looking into installing small servers at each tower and just running
OSPF between that tower and our NOCs. This would tend to make cpe
connections more robust as packet loss due to interference caused by a
clueless or unscrupulous competitor would not leave the customers linksys
router lost.

What are are the general opinions here on this?

If tower site termination is the norm, what hardware (extended temp range)
are you using at the towers?

Microtik or other software?
