[WISPA] Slightly OT: punching holes in stainless steel enclosures

2016-06-18 Thread mike . lyon
Howdy.

Ordered a nice new stainless steel outdoor enclosure to house some equipment. I
need to put some 3/4 inch holes in it. Anyone happen to know if using a regular
Klein or Greenlee punch set will do the trick? I know they work great on mild
steel but wasn't sure about stainless.

Anyone ever done it before?

 Hi Folks,

Just a question - is this the general consensus among list members? I

*Subject: *[WISPA] Rocket AP through put

Looking for some feed back concerning Rocket APs. We have quite a few of
these in the field with UBNT Sectors and KPerformance Sectors.

What we run into is customer complaints about slow speeds at night when
they call into after hours support. We come in the next day and run speed
tests to the radios and they look ok.

Some APs have 20 subs and some as high as 50 subs.

Yesterday one of our employees ran speed tests from his home connected to
one of those APs during the day and he got 15M. Then that evening he tried
to watch Netflix - biggest complaint from most subs - and it would not
start. He ran a speed test and got 500K. The AP he is connected to has 19
 subs.

Trying to figure out just how many subs streaming on an AP will bring the
 through put down to 500K?

We are considering limiting how many streams can run on a given AP but
need to figure where the breaking point is if that makes any sense.

Thanks for any insight any one can shed on this.

little maintenance. It doesn't matter how cold or hot it is, they just work

With a genset, you are not looking at any major maintenance, maybe a
few hours / year. and if it dies , you buy another one and you are
still under the amount a TEG would cost. Hell, you could buy 4 gensets
for the price of a TEG.

Me thinks its a ripoff even though i think they are cool...

I found a pretty cool little RV one made by Cummins:

That looks pretty cool. I dug into it a little deeper to see where they
 are getting the TEGs from:

I am wondering if one of these TEGs would be cheaper than getting a
 propane generator at ~$1900

I am going to request a quote...

Re: [WISPA] Solat panels: series or parallel?

2013-11-20 Thread Mike Lyon
First off, thank you all for all of the wonderful input!

Secondly, i went back and re-calc'd the load. It's actually 2.1 amps @
24vdc (not 5 amps as i previously stated).

What are the formulas (or websites) folks are using when sizing out
solar systems?

Thank You,
Mike

On Nov 20, 2013, at 7:18, Eric Flanery eflan...@fsr.com wrote:

 A couple more thoughts...

5a/24v load on 600w of panel... That puts you at 5 hours of full sun, per
day, just to cover the load. Unless you are close to the equator, that
doesn't leave much for increasing the charge on the batteries. If you go even
a few days without full sun, it will take quite some time for the batteries
 to recover.

If you do go ahead and add more panels, and switch to a mppt controller, I'd
wire those in series as well, to 72v or 96v nominal. Most mppt controllers
can handle 150v, but you don't want to get too close to that, as panel output
can easily exceed their nominal rating. There are now mppts that can handle
600v, but I have no experience with those.

Regarding tracking arrays, I wouldn't consider them unless space is at a huge
premium, and the site is easily accessible for repair. You will almost
certainly get a better bang for your buck by spending the money on additional
 panels, rather than trackers.

Eric has the idea spot on, I'll follow up with what a lot of
off-gridders around here in N. Nevada had tutored me on. That is the
losses and controlling them. Number one with a bullet is loss from
throwing electrons down wires.. You know it from poe losses and it's a
100 times worse in solar applications. The biggest gain through using
serial panels is in reduction of current loss through the wires between
the panels and to the charge controller. You would have to have
monster wires to be as efficient as 3 amps down reasonably sized wires
at 120 volts as 15 amps at 24. And as you go from the charge
controller to the batteries and you eat away your 5 amps ( at 24 Volts?
That is Big ) you still have 10 amps between the controller and your
batteries. Get Very Large Cables, as large as the controller will
accept. MPPT controllers are the ticket unless you have tracking
arrays, in which case the guys here go back to pwm for better results.
I haven't figured out why, they just show me the numbers that show it.
MPPT controllers running in serial also have the advantage that you
can mix and match your panels without losing the output of your large
 panels into the small ones..

Lastly we angle our panels in the winter to the lowest sun angles as
that is when the transit is shortest and the need the greatest.

Decoupling the panel voltage from the charging voltage let's you start
charging a bit earlier, and keep charging a bit longer; plus mppt is a
 bit more efficient than pwm.

Most importantly, it let's you double your panels (which is your best
bet overall), without having to increase the gauge of your wiring.

mount, as the only place with clear line-of-sight is on the roof of both gas
stations. Flat roof without much of a lip to mount an antenna to. All of my
Google searches come up with much larger non-penetrating roof mounts, 3' or
wider, which are designed for much larger and taller masts. Also very
 pricey, $150 or more each.

Does anyone make a small non-penetrating roof mount, say 2ft square out of
metal with an attachment to hold a 5ft mast or including a 5ft mast? Maybe a
single cinder/cement block to weigh it down would be all that is needed.
Won't ever need to go higher.

Or do you have another suggestion for mounting?

 Thanks in advance,

Curious to hear what other action WISPs have taken with their
customers when these notices come down. Do you simply pass the notice
to the customer and have them correspond with the accuser or does the
WISP act as an intermediary between rhe accuser and the WISP customer?

Thanks in advance!
