Unless you're VPN'ed back home, you'll have an IP address registered
elsewhere. They usually have a method to look elsewhere too, once they
direct you to where they think is the best place for you which usually
is.

1. Find a part of the country where one of your customers live, and
you'd like to "come from".
2. Build a tunnel to their network
3. Watch Detroit Tigers
4. Cry because of the results. :-)

For what it's worth, I did this some time ago. Well, not exactly this,
but similar. There was a problem from my network reaching my invoicing
software online. It appeared to be a routing issue, which they blamed
on my end. I simply built a tunnel to another part of the country
(actually did this 3 times) and routed traffic to them over those
tunnels one at a time. I found that their connectivity to 2 major
providers was flakey at best. They used my traceroutes to get things
working again. If you need help, Jeff, I know a guy

It is doing it from your IP address. The server does a lookup on your IP
address to see where you are located and forwards you to the website for your

Targeted advertising is the future of the Internet. Point the guy with

Add a picture of the great looking waitress and suddenly coffee is

I just realized you said "Naples".I wasn't aware that there was actually
any women that lived there.

Ok, change that to "people".

LOL! JUST KIDDING!

Ok, so I used to live in an less populated area... Up the Yaak River
Road... 36 miles from Highway 2 to my driveway... Of course, Google maps
actually SHOWS Yaak on it, but back then, even the state highway maps
didn't :)

Re: [WISPA] OT, IE is allowing strange things

2009-05-08 Thread reader
You don't have to these days. Those ads are being attached to more and
more NOT PORNO sites.

One of my favorite car sites has gone to side banners, there's several of
them, and all are advertising female something or other :(

I sit corrected.

Mine send me to
http://www.aaa.com/scripts/WebObjects.dll/ZipCode.woa/wa/route

It's the AAA's web site. They're sending you to the appropriate part of
their web site. You just deal with it, that's how they run their web site.

It would have nothing to do with IE, but is most likely a toolbar or

2009-05-08 Thread os10rules
Even if you use an anonymizer or a public vpn tunnel (different names
for the same thing) you will just have their ip address and you'll get
location specific info for their area.

I live in Venezuela and my google searches keep going to google.co.ve
(which prioritizes sites in Spanish which I can read buy usually are
not the results I'm looking for) and I keep steering it back to
google.com. But when I clear my browser and go back to google I'm back
at google.co.ve again.

These companies think they're being helpful and for most people it
probably is.

Its your IP address. The same way the Porno ads show you all those
fantastic looking women in "Naples Idaho".
Hell I have lived here 35 years and if even one of them really lived
here I would have hit on them long ago!!!

It is not hard to reverse lookup in-addr.arpa records or cross reference
  the swip database.

Big brother is watching, if these spammers can do this think what the
Federales can do.

It knows you have IP address 64.146.146.x (or whatever). By using IP
geolocation, it is easily determined that you are in Washington.

Make it stop by using an anonymizer (proxy service).

These things are intended to be a service. I mean, if AAA has different
services in some parts of the country, then you'd be more likely to be
wanting to view Washington services. At least that's their plan/intent.

This is based on your whois information on your IP range. Google does
this too based on your country.

Use a proxy in some other country if you want to change your IP address.

[WISPA] OT, IE is allowing strange things

2009-05-07 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
OK, this seems simple enough. Type in www.aaa.com and go to the triple A
site right?

Nope, it somehow knows that I'm in zip code 99159 and sends me,
automatically to www.aaawa.com!

How in the world is a web site finding this info in my machine? Where the
heck is it stored? How do I make it stop?

If I do a google search and click on aaa I can get there, put it into the
ADDRESS (NOT search) bar I get redirected to a site other than the one I
wanted.

I am SOO tired of being controlled! I don't even have the freedom to
select the web site that I choose to go to. I mean really?

Anyone have any idea how this is possible and how to make the bastards stop
snooping? I've deleted all of the search engines that were stuck in the
browser, I've tightened up as much of the security that I can find without
breaking everything else.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Please do NOT tell me to use firefox or some other browser. Most of my
customers use IE and I have to know how to help protect them.

thanks,
marlon
