We were looking into Freeside it's quite nice, just not sure how easy to
migrate from one billing system to the other. We have this crazy old
program called MCM which is awful! You can only search by customer
username, last name after that's it's a crap shoot.

I'll toss out Playpus combined with ModusMail, VOP RADIUS, and Tucows for a
Registrar. Yes, Tucows now owns Platypus. There's really very little I
can't do from within Platypus when combined with all of these. For a
control panel, we do not currently have one but have demo'd a few - the ones
that integrate with Platypus seemlessly. Nothing stands out to us that fits
both price and feature set, although it's been awhile since we looked.

I use H-Sphere for this. It has an end-user interface for this purpose.
It supports mail, web, DNS, SQL, and quite a few other server types. It
manages windows and UNIX servers. Very reasonable one time fee per user
account. Logical servers can be located on any number of physical
servers (email split across multiple physical boxes with web and DNS on
another box, for example).

It lacks a few features such as easy management of reverse DNS. If
you're a UNIX guru most of that type of functionality can be managed
manually.

Re: [WISPA] OT: Plesk

2008-04-28 Thread Tom DeReggi
Maybe take the question one step further

Often Email, DNS management, and Webhosting get done on different servers
and/or different operating systems.
And integrated software package, on a per server bases, would not adequately
solve management, without tripling the cost, under the above situation.
Additionally, solving configuration automation, is have the battle, somehow
it also has to integrate with billing. So which billing platforms it
integrates with could also be a key buying factor.

Considering all the above... What product best handles the above for the
lowest price? Any of them allow a multiple server prooduct?
Microsoft did this with there Small business servers. Even though only one
license for each product (SQL, Exchange, FileServer) was granted, each
application could be co-located on any server, as long as each application
was not running on more than one server. For example, currently our Mail,
accounting, webserving runs on Windows, but DNS on Linux.

We were looking for a good program to manage DNS zones and registrar
renewal, beyond just manual bind file management, but don't so web hosting
per say. (except limited capacity).

My opinion is, a monthly fee really isn't all that bad for software,
compared to paying higher per customer cost of a managed solution. If all
the automated needs were solved, maybe very well worth it. But to replicate
the cost, by three X, because one runs dedicated servers for individual
applications, I think that would be a bit much.

setup customer email account in our sendmail configuration. Would like to
eliminate our need to make those changes/additions and or deletions.

I've got a test machine with "ISPConfig" (ispconfig.org). It looks to
cover much of the same ground as Plesk and cPanel, and is free to boot.
I haven't extensively played with it beyond making sure it works (in the
most basic sense), but it looks promising.

Also, does ISPConfig do what you want (it's free, open source, and has
paid support)?

Hi,

I can't find any pricing on Cpanel's website. Looks like they have gone
to rent/lease as well.

cPanel and we love it! However, we've found you need to have a pretty
beasty server if you intend on loading it up a bit.
