Re: [WISPA] ruggedized enclosures Mikrotik

2009-08-19 Thread Chuck Hogg
I've got a few I just revisited due to a lightning storm that have been
in use for over a year, and didn't have that issue. I had some minor
paint chipping around the hinge but that is all. I even had to open
them upside down and the gasket stayed intact the whole time. One thing
I do, is I put a small amount of Goop in the corners in the track to
make sure it doesn't come out easily. It wasn't deformed and sealed up
fine (AFAIK, it's lasted a few storms without issue).

Appears to be the one that Ligowave/Deliberant used for some products.

When it is new, it is a really nice box, but look at one that has been
on a
tower for a few months.
It rusts around the screws, the paint gets flaky and horrible after even
6
months outside and the gasket either falls out or gets deformed and will
not
stay in its track.

We've been using the small pacific wireless boxes with the hinged lid
for
our 411 boards. Cast aluminum. I've never had any heat issues from
them
but we're in Ohio, not that bad for heat. Could always attach a heat
sink
to the rear of it on the outside I bet.

I've been looking for a good box for the 433ah, though. Anyone have a
good
idea on one that isn't too expensive? Used some plastic NEMA boxes from
Home Depot at 30 bucks each but they are way too big, 12x12x6. And ya
gotta
drill your own holes, no knockouts. And gotta paint them, they are
gray,
catch the sun really good and hold the heat.

I am in Ohio too. I find that in places where the temperature drops 50
degrees in 12 hours the gasket doesn't hold up at all. One that stands out
is on the side of a hotel - blazing sun to dark shadow. I have taken the
boxes, cleaned them out, put in new equipment and then coax seal the top
edge (YUCK!) to "fix" this.

Since I found them I have really liked these (2 or 4 N hole versions):

http://quicklinkwireless.com/Itemdesc.asp?ic=DCE-H-LG-4&eq=&Tp=

No one will share who makes them, but they're available several places.

Re: [WISPA] ruggedized enclosures Mikrotik

2009-08-19 Thread Scott Carullo

Enclosures are like vehicles, everyone has their favorite lol

I hate the ones you suggested below and like the ones you had to coax seal
:) (that stuff is supreme nasty in clothes, carpet etc especially after it
gets hot and sticky)

You can eliminate the gasket problems (depending on the exact problem)
simple by drilling a small hole in the bottom of the case to the pressure
inside is the same outside. A small hole won't cause any other problems
either, a lot of commercial radio enclosures have this built in to prevent
wicking of moisture (Trango atlas for example)

I've got them all up and down the beach here in FL and have been fine for 5
years. I hate to have to open one up now but thats got nothing to do with
the seal, just the hardware dealing with salt spray for years. Nothing I
have found can take that environment for that long except a staineless
steel enclosure by hoffman or eurobex that costs $200-500 each.

The pvc and fiberglass are nice but after a while the sun eats them up.
Any kind of aluminum or steel gets corroded or rusted out bad after years.
But, the pac cases i my mind are disposable, just like the components
inside these days. So long as I can get 3+ years out of it I can't
complain...

Re: [WISPA] ruggedized enclosures mikrotik

2009-08-19 Thread Chuck Hogg
I've seen the 8 screw leak when the cover plate is clamped down it will
leave a depression in the gasket. If you ever have to open it up, the
gasket does not release, and the depression remains. Tightened it back
down, had to revisit the site 2 weeks later, water got in and touched
the routerboard, shorting it out.

Other sites where I have not had to open it back up, have been in
service 2+ years since I installed them without issues.

The smaller ones (we used rb532) both hinged and 8 screw (man did these
suck).

I personally have never seen an 8 screw box leak (I have seen the hinged
one
leak).

The box I recommended you can use a nut driver or phillips BUT older boxes
need an alan wrench (or patience + vice grips). The ones that use an alan
wrench seem to have disappeared though.

2009-08-19 Thread Robert West
What size pac wireless box were you using that had the issues and did it
have the hinged cover? We use the smaller ones for the 411 board with the
hinged cover with no trouble but from looking at it, the gasket isn't much
there for protection. If it was a box with no hinge, just screwed on do you
think that would overcome the issue? Just guessing but since I never
thought of it before, not much down pressure on it from just that one screw
closing it up. I like the hinges, makes it easy but now that you brought up
gasket failure I would feel better with screws all the way around on a
larger box. Larger box, larger area to expand and more of a chance to allow
seepage through the seals?? Makes sense to me. Just thinking aloud here.

Does it have to be temperature controlled? I find that the no-brand chinese
enclosures work here in Ohio - ranging from 110 to -10. The worst scenario
they hold up well against is the 110 early afternoons to 60 night times and
back - that killed the PacWireless enclosures.

Re: [WISPA] ruggedized enclosures mikrotik

2009-08-19 Thread Scott Reed
That is almost going to require at least a fan.

I like the NEMA 3R boxes from Saginaw Control and Engineering
http://www.saginawcontrol.com/. Hinged cover. I put a piece of DIN
rail on the backplate and mount the boards on a smaller backplate.
Attach DIN endplates to backplate with the board and hang them in the
box. Removal/replacement requires umplugging the power, the data cable
and the N-connector. Lift and pull. Put in the new one attache
cables. 5 minutes to completely change an AP. These are industrial
boxes with a gasket and a 1/4 turn latch that accepts a padlock.

Since I found them I have really liked these (2 or 4 N hole versions):
http://quicklinkwireless.com/Itemdesc.asp?ic=DCE-H-LG-2&eq=&Tp=
http://quicklinkwireless.com/Itemdesc.asp?ic=DCE-H-LG-4&eq=&Tp=

No one will share who makes them, but they're available several places.

2009-08-19 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
The new ones I've been getting from Butch are big enough and are pretty
strong. Nice weather proof gasket too.

In fact they are so tough that you have to drill out the knock outs! sigh

We went with these boxes so that we can just swap boards in the future.
We're using bulk head n-f/f gender benders with n-m pigtails. Change radios
and all we have to do is change the guts and the pig tail. NO need to
retape anything. Should make future upgrades a lot easier. We'll just keep
a spare in the shop so we can pre-drill the backplane for any radio we
decide to put in them.

Hope that helps.

laters,
marlon

Does it have to be temperature controlled? I find that the no-brand chinese
enclosures work here in Ohio - ranging from 110 to -10. The worst scenario
they hold up well against is the 110 early afternoons to 60 night times and
back - that killed the PacWireless enclosures.

[WISPA] ruggedized enclosures mikrotik

2009-08-19 Thread Mike Goicoechea
Does anyone know of good "ruggedized" enclosures that a mtk 433ah and 411
will fit in. We are looking for temperature and physically rugged as it will
be deployed several times in military environment.

Thanks!
