Yes, I can confirm Scrivs point. I have a 300' cat5 25 Pr and it is punched down on a 12 port RJ45 Block, standard Cat5e terminal. It has worked well, thou I am not using today. We have a superior essex 25 pair but have not terminated it yet. Is there an actual way to make since out of the mess of wires? When the shielding is peeled back there is no grouping of pairs, color differentiation, etc... How do you tell what pair is what aside from toning them? John, I worked with an audio engineer in a past life who used them to wire sound systems for big churches and he claimed that not all punch down blocks would pass the same bandwidth. How to tell the good from the bad, I don't know. Maybe they come rated up to a certain freq? Google for 25 pair color codes. Telco used several colors for the white part of the pairs. So orange-white, then orange-black then orange-yellow, etc etc. I made a table from one of these web pages, and printed it out for the techs to follow it, and it worked out well, (They only messed up on a couple of pairs during all three of them they wired. I have been told the same regarding terminating pairs on a 110 block vs. 66 block. 110 blocks were made with CAT5 in mind whereas 66 blocks were around probably long before CAT5 was widely implemented. I'm not sure if they make 66 blocks that are CAT5 rated or not, but the ones we use come with covers labeled CAT5. We've used them in a number of projects ranging from water towers to apartment complexes. Yes, I understand there is a common color code used for 25pr, but we simply keep the pairs in the same order at each end of the cable. We haven't had any trouble maintaining 100MB FDX over this setup and in some cases the cable is every bit of 330'...maybe a bit more. We just deployed on two water towers, and ran 25 pair cables on both. We have 8 port patch panels (from Skywalker) and a total of 14 cables on one tower. We have deployed AP's and backhauls to almost fill up the boxes. It works great. Yep, works nicely. We've run several hubs with 25pr CAT5 outdoor cable. Gobs and gobs of goo inside...have a few hand rags ready! I believe the cable brand is Mohawk. Good stuff. If you need 100 megabit Cat 5 performance then it is best to terminate on 110 blocks instead of 66 blocks. That is what I was always told in the past. I have no proof other than what others told me.
