We use galvanized 2 pipe and 3/4 inch allthread. Drill an hole through the
pipe and pole and use nuts and washers to put them together with a 6 inch or
so space between them.

Anyone have any detailed photos or ideas for side mounting to a wooden
 utility pole?

We have a site that will only allow side mounting at about 35' AGL on a
 wooden utility pole.

I considered building a stand off bracket out of Unistrut and mounting
 it
directly through the hole with galvanized hardware but it seems a bit
 overkill for a single omni.

 Thanks!

we use these guys for utility pole mounted battery and solar panels.

For all serious pole mounts, I use these:
http://www.sitepro1.com/store/cart.php?m=search_resultssearch=TCHM1

This would be for a micro-pop however, not for a home pole install.

I put a 10 foot 2 schedule 80 into these and out the top of the pole for
dish/panel install.

I kinda ruled out stainless hose clamps after seeing a solar panel fall from
the leg of a Trylon tower about a decade ago... Granted, there were two
sharp points (inside ends of the L shaped tower leg) that probably
contributed to the failure in high winds, but in this case where it's only
wood, that might work.

We mounted a couple antennas to a pole using a pole-pipe mounting kit
