eduroam for participants in the eduroam fabric

a few hidden ones with wpa-psk for scanners (ticketing system)

cedarwireless-guest: coffee shop type wireless with limited access,

cedarwireless-special: non-broadcast SSID for smartphone/PDA/iPhone/
iPod touch and game consoles
cedarwireless-unsecure: clear network with captive portal for

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Wireless network names

2009-04-06 Thread Jeffrey Sessler
I'd recommend against using "secure" as part of the SSID name ie.
"cedarwireless-secure"

While WPA2-Ent adds encryption between the client and AP, it doesn't add
anything else for the data being transported between the client and end-point.
By including the word "secure" your user-base may have a false sense that
anything they do while connected to that SSID is being protected by the
University i.e. "http:// is fine when accessing my bank because I'm using the
University "secure" wireless network."

I'd also limit the length of the SSIDs as there are some devices that truncate
names >15 characters.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Wireless network names

2009-04-04 Thread Frank Bulk
The KSC_Student SSId as you describe is not a wise setup - the majority of
your user base is operating in the clear. The only place where unencrypted
access should be accessible is guest access which would have limitations in
terms of speed or captive portal, and no access to internal resources, or
for gaming devices where the open ports/IPs are limited to the services
those devices require, also without access to internal resources. CCA as
you have is good for host-based security/health posture checking, but
hackers can sniff all the network.

KSC_Guest - blusocket controlled, internet access only

KSC_Student - no controls or encryption but dumps in behind our CCA so they
have to log in there to get anywhere. Student primarily use this because of
simplicity.

KSC_Secure - WPA, 802.1x, required for fac/staff to access any on campus
resources. Optional for students. If students select it our
controller/radius arrangement puts them into the same vlan as the
KSC_Student SSID so they also have to comply with CCA including the login.
Very few students use it since it would require specific settings on their
PC and two logins

Couple other select ones for special applications. All begin with "KSC_". So
it seems we are nearly the same as you.

2009-04-01 Thread Armstrong, Geoff
Hello Nathan,

We *try* to include our school's abbreviated name in the SSID and try to avoid
common names.

Here is our list;

Broadcast:
ubc [WebAuth/Open (hope to discontinue within 24 months)]
ubcsecure [WPA/TKIP w PEAP (adding mixed mode WPA2/AES soon)]
eduroam [roaming/guest academic users from participating institutes]
FatPort (Non-UBC User) [non-eduroam and/or non-academic guest users (pay per
use)]

Non-Broadcast:
ubcdevice [mac authentication / for bridging and dummy devices]
ubcvoice [WPA2/AES EAP-FAST telephony replacement SSID]
telephony [WEP128 PSK/ for our old cisco 7920 deployment(soon to be
discontinued)]

With our identity based wireless deployment around the corner we hope to retire
a two or three of these soon.

Hi Nathan,

Like many in the thread we went down the branding route; our system
is called OWL, and we use a big picture of an owl on hotspot advert
posters, etc. The users seem to find asking whether somewhere "has
OWL" gets a better response than "has wireless".

So "OWL" is one of our SSIDs, completely open. Provides VPN server
access for members, and captive portal for visitors.

Our encrypted service is "eduroam" which many of you may know
about[1]. That's where we're pushing all staff and students, so they
use OWL with VPN only if they have no WPA. We don't support devices
which can't do WPA Enterprise[2].

Cisco WiFi IP Phones use a non-broadcast third SSID.

Because of our federated IT structure, we also added rules about
what other wireless networks can be called in University premises:

"The SSID OWL, or any prefix or suffix on that identifier may only
be used according to a naming scheme released by OUCS, and the OWL
family of SSIDs will be used only to provide standardised OWL services

The SSID eduroam, or any prefix or suffix on that identifier, may
not be used except for the purposes of the international Eduroam
service"

I hope that helps,

We are currently only broadcasting two SSIDs to campus
Richmond: Open unencrypted network used for computer registration portal and
various devices that do not support WPA/TKIP or WPA2/AES
urwin: required for all devices that support WPA/TKIP or WPA2/AES
Our approach is to required WPA/TKIP at a minimum and all users/phones/game
consoles/etc use this ssid for wireless connectivity. On a case by case basis
we will allow devices to remain connected on the Richmond ssid if they can not
be upgraded for use with WPA/TKIP. All devices are required to be registered
with MAC address and NetID before connectivity ti urwin is permitted. Devices
not registered and connected to either Richmond or urwin will be confined to
our registration system.

One compelling reason for choosing a SSID name is Trademark. There are some who
say (this is unproven to the best of my knowledge) that f you register your
name as a trademark you have a better chance of legally defending your right
not to have others broadcast it - nefarious or otherwise. It looks like you
already have started 'family branding' around cedarwireless-...why would

We have a couple extra that we are phasing out, but in our final design,
we will end up with:

-MSCwireless - WPA2 Enterprise for the majority of our clients

-MSCdevices - Special SSID for gaming consoles and other handheld stuff
that does not support WPA2

-MSCguest - Restricted Internet-only traffic for visitors

We might use a couple others for special events or other things, but
those serve us pretty well.

Our first campuswide (non-trial) SSID name was "nuwlan". When we set up a
new one for 802.1X/WPA2 authentication, we named it "Northwestern". nuwlan
is actually still active, just not broadcasted.

Aside from those, we have a few little localized ones for specialty
audiences and locations.
