It seems like everyone has run into this in one way or another.  We put AP's in 
the apartment style dorms and in the suite style dorms and had complaints about 
the lights.  It was easy enough to turn them off.  In a few locations, not 
dorms, that are normally dark like our theater or performing halls, we turned 
them of as well.

The simple accommodation has not caused us any real issues.  We had a few 
reports of "no wifi" when new students arrived, but those were easy to take 
care of.

First-world problems... Curious if others have gone down this road in Residence 
Halls. We're not really being asked to, but are considering wholesale disabling 
LEDs on our Cisco APs in the dorms as a quality of life step. Has this caused 
anyone any pain when it comes to not being able to see the colors on the AP as 
status indication? Have you actually had requests to disable the LEDs? Overall 
experience with accommodating or denying the request?

I've got about 300 WAP's (Enterasys/Extreme Networks) in dorms with lights on 
for the last 2 years and haven't had any requests to turn them off here. These 
WAP's are wall or ceiling mounted and generally away from beds though and the 
LED's are pin-prick in size. They don't seem to emit a lot of light over a 
large area. I admittedly have more problems (not many, though) with students 
disconnecting them from the wall to try and plug in an Xbox or something else 
(which switch mac locking prevents).

More often than not it has been useful to have the LED's on so that hall 
directors can help me out by reconnecting disconnected WAP's instead of me 
needing to get card access to rooms and make a personal visit. I just ask them 
to make sure the blinkies start up. I'm looking into cable locks for the 
future...

We have had a few request from one of our dorms where some were not able to 
sleep due to this LED - we turned them of in the entire dorm. Two times during 
the semester trouble shooting for our tech were made more difficult and we had 
to enable them again one time while they were working, and then we turned them 
back off.

The following semester we enabled them again and have not had any complaint 
since and they are all on

We have had a few request from one of our dorms where some were not able to

I have told Res Life that we have the ability to turn the lights off if 
students would prefer that.  I don't think they are any brighter than the light 
on the smoke detectors that are 3' away, but I've offered the option.  So far, 
no takers.  We did have someone request that the AP be removed from the room, 
so as not to bombard them with harmful radio waves.

As far as seeing the colors of the lights, half of my team is color blind...

After going through several rooms and finding tape, post-it notes and other 
similar things on the APs covering the LEDs we went ahead and disabled the LEDs 
on all residence hall APs.  No problems, except for the occasional time you 
forget where you are and look up and think the AP is down because there is no 
LED indicator.

Since we moved from old design (AP's down the hall) to new design (AP's in the 
rooms) I have seen patient rooms with medical tape and bandages covering up the 
LED in patient rooms.  It seems when you are sick and laying in a hospital bed 
and have trouble sleeping the single LED shining in your eyes are an issue.  I 
get it and understand it.

I am testing this in my office for now and plan to review with support staff 
but I will as a policy disable all LED's on AP's.  In the end it may not really 
be that useful considering they are all managed on the backend for up/down 
status.  If an AP is having issues connecting with the controller it flashes so 
when they see an LED they know there is a problem.

Definitely a patient satisfaction improvement.
