RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] off-topic: does anyone do voip ?

2011-04-13 Thread Kellogg, Brian D.
Thanks that is comforting to hear. The deadlocking issues I read about were
the only things that caused me to worry when placing this in production for our
Voicemail, IVR, and Conferencing solution. But they have been up for 8 months
without any reported issues plus it is saving us a good amount of cash each
year. We started testing with AsteriskNOW 1.5 a year ago and that is what we
have in production now and are quite happy with it. Integration with
Callmanager was very simple. We run all three services in a VMware ESXi 4
environment.

Thanks for sharing your experience,
Brian

Just my $0.02 on Asterisk. I have put in a couple of dozen
installations of Asterisk instances for small to medium size enterprise
companies. I also manage and develop applications that use Asterisk for
the base platform. The former are typically Trixbox installs as it is a
nicely developed product that is free (CE) and can be supported by
Fonality as well as other consultants when I get run over by a truck.
The GUI can be used by most jr. sysadmins to continue to maintain the
box. Typically, I will install the system and walk away as they can
support it themselves.

For the applications I develop, the asterisk install is the base
asterisk code with AGI or some other scripting on top of it. Asterisk
is very flexible with its APIs.

In both scenarios, we have instances where the servers are getting hit
with 10s or 100s of concurrent calls, VM etc. I have yet to run into a
problem with dead locking. I did run into one bug with an early 1.4
instance were I wasn't getting a ringing sound back when calling out to
two numbers at the same time. Upgrading to a more current 1.4 resolved
that and was identified in the CHANGES document.

Asterisk is pretty mature. I know of large call centers that rely on it
and push 100s of thousands of calls a day through systems. There are
well known instances of Asterisk being used for various free
conferencing systems out there as well. I would continue to recommend
it to customers looking to lowering their costs for phone systems.

what should we be looking at?

I'm extremely hesitant to base this critical infrastructure on open-source,
although Asterisk seems like a mature product.

BTW, when I replied earlier, I forgot to mention that we
ended up going with an all-Cisco solution. We have a Call Manager cluster,
a Unity Connection cluster, and E911 (Emergency Responder) cluster, a single
Contact Center Express server, and an Auto Attendant Console. We've been
extremely pleased.

We evaluated Cisco, Shortel, Avaya, and Nortel four years ago. We went with
Cisco and are very satisfied with their solution. We did replace Cisco
Unity with Asterisk for our voicemail and are using Asterisk for our call
conferencing services as well.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] off-topic: does anyone do voip ?

2011-04-07 Thread Mike King
Shiling,

I used to manage a CS1000, and still follow the product from time to time.
I now manager a Cisco UCM cluster. I like the Cisco Cluster.

This is a post from a Nortel mailing list I'm on, the person posting was
David Zeter from Montana State: Mailing list for Northern Telecom related
issues
http://www.tgrace.com/mailman/listinfo/nortel-list

the last day of the joint InAAU/INNUA/Insight 100 User Conference in
Denver, and here is what Avaya has said:

First off, the 7-year window of support that Rick references is the minimum
time from when a product is announced end-of-sale (minimum of one year of
sales from the announcement, plus 3 years of software support for patches,
feature updates, additional licenses, etc., plus 3 years of hardware
support). That is when a product is at end-of-life. At this time, only two
products have been flagged for end-of-sale - the MCS-5100 and one other (the
something-500, I can't remember the three-letter prefix).

There is no plan to end-of-sale the CS1000. There is a new dual-core
processor card, and a new processor/media gateway combo-card coming out for
the small systems; a conversion path for turning a CS1000M (migrated
Meridian switch) into a CS1000E for geographical redundancy (with up to
triple cores); software release 7.0 coming in summer, with another release
in the pipe. As of release 7, there will no longer be a TDM-only (Meridian
1) version sold - all systems will be sold as the CS1000, IP-enabled switch,
with a signaling server.

The Avaya Aura system is the developmental future of both the heritage
Nortel and heritage Avaya product lines, but Aura can be over-laid as a SIP
application server on either product line. Our CS1K systems are not going
end-of-life.

CallPilot and Avaya's Modular Messaging are going to be merged into a new,
Red-Hat Linux based messaging system currently called Messaging 6.0 or
Next-Gen Messaging (they'll give it a real name soon - it's currently in
beta, with the first release going GA in the August time frame). CallPilot
is held at release 5.0, with the release 5.5 and 6.0 feature improvements
coming as Service Updates. End of sale is unofficially planned in about two
years, but there will be license migration to the new system, and the
release 5 hardware will support the new OS and messaging applications, so
there is forklifting in themigration. The second-phase release of the new
system in November will include a CallPilot TUI, so the user experience will
not change much.

There is a lot more information coming out in the June product
announcements. For those who would rather have real information, instead of
speculation, I'll suggest joining INNUA, and participating in a local
chapter and conferences. The membership will transfer to the new user
organization (IAUG - the International Avaya User's Group) when its
structure is finalized in the fall. Avaya has expressed a commitment to
open communication and support of the new IAUG. I've never been a big fan
of Avaya, but I'm pleased with most of what I've seen so far.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] off-topic: does anyone do voip ?

2011-04-06 Thread Zeller, Tom S
  1. Here is an Educause forum for discussion of such issues. It has
reorganized the old net@edu working groups under the umbrella of Advanced Core
Technologies Initiative (ACTI: http://www.educause.edu/acti) and one of the
working groups is the Communication, Collaboration, and Mobility Group (CCM).
Participation in biweekly phone calls as well as physical meetings is open to
Educause members (there is an additional fee for ACTI participation, I believe).
  2. Indiana University has deployed the Microsoft solution to hundreds of
phones and thousands of converged communication users (chat, desktop sharing,
app sharing, direct file exchange, presence, video) and we are upgrading to the
new Lync version in May. This has been running for about two years and we are
beginning a big push to move analog phones into this system.
  3. IU provides a free federation service for higher education. Campuses
with the MS solution only have to open select ports and their users can see the
presence of users on other campuses and dial with a click (and vice versa).

our experience/process. Feel free to reach out to me off-list by any method

Hi

We're looking into doing VOIP on our campus, and are trying to gather some
information. Given this list is a Higher Ed list, I thought I'd try here. I
am wondering if anyone on this list has already implemented VOIP on their
campus and are willing to talk briefly off-line from this list about it.
If so, please let me know.

Thanks!

Well, I am actually interested in VoIP topic too. We are considering
Cisco and Avaya to replace Nortel CS1000.
