There isn't any way to extend the timeout today. However, it would probably be
a good idea to narrow down the issue a bit further before extending the
timeout. Does the SQL profiler show anything useful?

Subject: [WiX-users] SqlDatabase local named instance

Dear All,

I have been receiving an error when using Wix to create databases or run SQL
scripts on a local, named instance of SQL Server 2005 Express SP2.
The installer hangs and then reports "Error -2147467259: failed to create SQL
database"
This only happens the first time you run the installer and works fine the
second time.

I read elsewhere that using "[ComputerName]" as the server attribute instead of
"localhost" would fix the problem with a named instance. However I am still
receiving the same problem.
This leads me to believe this may be a time-out issue as the SQL Server is
waking up after a period of inactivity. Is there any way of extending the
time-out period to wait a bit longer?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ollie

Can you provide the full stack trace and open a bug? This is definitely an
issue with Dark and it would be good to get it sorted out. There are several
cases where the casts are wrong or nullable fields are not be treated correctly.

I have a Setup Project in Visual Studio 2008 for a product we have created. I
would like to move it to WiX so that I can have more control over the installer
package creation.

I tried using the Dark utility on it to decompile it into a WiX source file.
It fails by throwing an InvalidCastException when it reaches the Control table
while trying to get the X column value (saying it's "Unable to cast object of
type 'System.Int32' to type System.String'").
I looked through the source of Dark.exe and the only thing I could find is that
the Control object stores the X property as a String, but I wonder if the
ColumnDefinition for X is declared as (or dynamically inferred as) an Integer.
Then when it calls the X property's get method, it tries to get the value out
of the Fields property using a string cast of the object rather than a
Convert.ToInt32() call. But I'm not totally sure...

Anyway, I tried this with a very small test application and setup project. It
also got the InvalidCastException at the same spot. So it appears maybe all
Visual Studio produced MSI installer are having this problem when trying to
decompile them using Dark?

Any thoughts or ideas how I can migrate to WiX? Thanks in advance.

Re: [WiX-users] Build behavior for WiX projects

2008-04-16 Thread Rob Mensching
I basically agree. I understand the desire to avoid having the WiX projects
rebuild every time you hit F5, but this behavior is going to be very difficult
to puzzle out without searching the wix-users archive. Personally, I would
pick only building by default in the Release configuration over this new
behavior. Although, building all the time might be okay too... especially if
validation didn't take so freaking long (a different battle to tackle)

You will need to write a custom action that reads the encrypted xml

Hello everyone,

I am playing around with WiX for quite some time now but I am a little
stuck at the moment. Is there any ready-to-use dialog like the browse
dialog that allows me to select single files?

I need to install SSL certificates during my installation and these
certificates should be provided by the user during the installation.
Therefore I need some sort of dialog where the user can choose the
certificate (.pfx) file.

I appreciate every help.

Best regards,
Patrick

Check a verbose log; you'll likely see "substitution" messages. Only

Then the user enters some other credentials and gets a different value

There's no documented way to do it. However, if you set the text box's

There's a known bug in that version, fixed in 3.0.4014.0. That release

You can't use InstallUISequence for that. MSI UI requires modal dialogs
in the wizard Back/Next sequence to be managed by control events from
the buttons. See http://www.wixwiki.com/index.php?title=WixUI_Custom for

Looks like wix-users is open to public posting. I just realized that I wasn't
subscribed to the list and was able to send stuff to it. That's the reason why
the list is full of spam posts. Maybe someone with admin privileges can disable
that?

[WiX-users] How can I show a dialog with dynamic text (from a property)?

2008-04-16 Thread dB.
I wrote a custom action that tests service credentials. When credentials
are invalid, it sets a property LOGON_ERROR with the Win32 error. So I
spawn an error dialog with that.

 1

Then the user enters some other credentials and gets a different value
of LOGON_ERROR. Unfortunately that dialog has already been created and
the value of the text field has been set. So I see the old error.

An Edit field doesn't have this problem, it updates every time.

How can I fix this?

[WiX-users] Decompiling Visual Studio MSI

2008-04-16 Thread Mike Murray
I have a Setup Project in Visual Studio 2008 for a product we have created. I
would like to move it to WiX so that I can have more control over the installer
package creation.

[WiX-users] Query user for a user ID and password?

2008-04-16 Thread Richard Amos
I'm writing an installer for a Windows service. It has to run under Vista, so
it's non interactive. This service needs to have the user ID and password of a
web service to do it's business. That info is stored (encrypted) in an XML
config file.

I have to ask the user/installer for the user ID and password before the
service starts, If it was a standard Windows app I'd do this when the program
first ran and pop up a dialog. However, with a non-interactive service I can't
do this.

So, can WiX for the work for me? Or do I need to write an app that is installed
with the service, auto runs, collects this user ID/password, writes it to the
config file and then starts the service itself?

[WiX-users] Problem controlling dialog sequencing with custom dialog

2008-04-16 Thread Holmgren Mathias
Hello,

This is my first post on this list, tried searching the archive but did
not help.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
VERSION INFO - I'm using Wix-3.0.2925.0.msi, Votive3.msi
(Votive-3.0.2015.0.zip) with some intermittent support from
wixedit-0.6.1762.msi.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I've made a custom dialog and I am having problems sequencing it. I want
it to appear after the CustomizableDlg and before the VerifyReadyDlg.

When I try to specify where in the sequence I want my custom dialog I
can't compile my Wix project.

My code:

i.e. when I use the code above I get this link exception.

Error LGHT0094: Unresolved reference to symbol
'WixAction:InstallUISequence/VerifyReadyDlg' in section
'Product:{2B13E785-D47A-4D58-9B8D-12153E5F368A}'.

I have added a project reference to WixUIExtension.dll and my linker is
configured to build output for the en-US culture.

If I try After="CustomizeDlg", linking fails just as above.

If I try scheduling my dialog after say "MigrateFeatureStates" (or
relative WelcomeDlg) instead it compiles, but I seem to have no control
of the dialog order or dialog navigation gets all screwed up.

I have tried a bunch of other random things, including trying to use the
DialogRef element, but nothing seems to work.

What am I missing? I am assuming (hoping) I don't have to roll my own
UIExtension assembly just to do this?

/Mathias

Thanks again Alex,

For my problem, I've found that I can create a registry setting rather
than edit a file (which was the purpose of my PowerShell script) so this
is kind of moot for me.

I have read Rob's "Why script CAs are bad" but have to admit that I
still write most of my CAs as scripts.

Regarding your comment, I don't see much functional difference in
creating a CA that calls powershell referencing;
1) an "in-line" script (using liberal escapes for braces)
2) a script that is either a msi binary or an installed file

I think I'm being "bad" either way. Please feel free to let me know if
I'm missing some fundamental concept here.

Thanks,
Dale

Obviously, it should work, though XmlConfig adds VerifyPath to better

That's a minor upgrade -- there's also major upgrades that don't require
command lines/bootstrappers. In any case, generate a verbose log and
check it around the InstallValidate action to see what MSI decided to do
for the component owning the file you want to upgrade.

WixDirectExtension is in the sources but I forgot to add it to the build

[WiX-users] Recursive folder deletion

2008-04-16 Thread Ryan O'Neill
I'm adding a cleanup routine to the installer we have and the .Net framework
is making it difficult by adding a folder under AppData that is based on the
strong name of the assembly.

This means that I get a folder named MyApp_StrongName_657235673256732765
which changes each time I compile as the hash changes too.

I know the parent folder is mine so it is safe to delete all below that. Has
anyone else come across deleting directory trees? I appreciate it is
dangerous but I can't see an easy way around it.

[WiX-users] select file dialog

Hello everyone,

I am playing around with WiX for quite some time now but I am a little
stuck at the moment. Is there any ready-to-use dialog like the browse
dialog that allows me to select single files?

I need to install SSL certificates during my installation and these
certificates should be provided by the user during the installation.
Therefore I need some sort of dialog where the user can choose the
certificate (.pfx) file.

I appreciate every help.

Best regards,
Patrick

I'd really appreciate that. The signal-to-noise ratio has really taken a hit

the reason why the list is full of spam posts. Maybe someone with admin

[WiX-users] SqlDatabase local named instance

2008-04-16 Thread Oliver Fairfoul
Dear All,

I have been receiving an error when using Wix to create databases or run SQL
scripts on a local, named instance of SQL Server 2005 Express SP2.

The installer hangs and then reports "Error -2147467259: failed to create
SQL database"

This only happens the first time you run the installer and works fine the
second time.

I read elsewhere that using "[ComputerName]" as the server attribute instead
of "localhost" would fix the problem with a named instance. However I am
still receiving the same problem.

This leads me to believe this may be a time-out issue as the SQL Server is
waking up after a period of inactivity. Is there any way of extending the
time-out period to wait a bit longer?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ollie

Re: [WiX-users] how to create strangely named database

2008-04-16 Thread Ryan O'Neill
I don't know WiX that well, but I know SQL. It might be that you are
connecting under a different user profile. For example, the script in .sql
could be attempting to change to a database that it does not have permission
on or is not accessible by DNS from the installing machine.

Also, you may be installing to the wrong instance of SQL. There might
already be SQL express or SQL server on the machine.

To find out where it is going wrong I recommend pausing the installing
somehow after the database has been created (perhaps calling a batch file
with the pause command in it) and then manually running the script in SQL
enterprise manager / Query Analyser or osqlw.
