This was frustrating, I ended up taking out the background .png and got a new image for the side banner .png that is only 1/3 of the real-estate so that the controls do not sit on top of the image... Hitting ALT key would ALWAYS set the controls to the background and the background image and side banner image would be on top... Doesn't look as nice, but since I couldn't figure a way to fix it... Has anyone else had this issue?? have a bitmap that covers text/button/etc controls... launch your bootstrapper, then hit the ALT key, do your controls go in the background (behind the bitmap?) sorry if I sound dimwitted... what does that have to do with controls going into the background and the images into the foreground? i.e. launch bootstrapper and I have a light gray background image to have the full area of the bootstrapper dialog a light gray colour (couldn't see how to change the dialog colour) then having a sidebanner image on top of that, and have text controls on top of those two images and the buttons... Hit the Alt key on keyboard and the text/buttons/etc controls go to the background and all I see is the light gray background image with the side banner on top of that one... I can see the outline of the controls that have accelerator keys assigned to them... FWIW, I've created a UI with wixstdba with a background image. Did have problem with text that changed (like Action text during install) since I marked all text blocks to be transparent. I had to give those text blocks a matching background (had to change the background image to have an area with a solid color for the text). Worked fine though. Client was happy. Not sure what root cause of your issues were. I've been playing with the burn bootstrappers and my only thought on this is that the options page has a lot of background work that's done and may not be the best page to overload. On the flip side, I think the mba basically hard codes the installation path. Tbh, until/unless someone writes a truly generic bootstrapper application engine you're likely sunk with some of these issues and may find it way easier to just author your own solution. The extmba is pretty tied to the specific scenarios it handles. It handles them well, but it doesn't really venture far outside the forest in my experience. There's a lot of funkiness with things like edit boxes being practically unusable (outside of specific supported scenarios) and not really being able to jump back forth between pages. I've been working on mocking up some type of solution. In WiX v3.8, the wixstdba was extended to be a bit more flexible but this is basically true. It a large undertaking to build a truly data driven customizable UI framework. IIRC, the Windows Installer took a couple full time developer 4 or 5 years to do theirs. This might be implicit in your post, but this is a Windows thing related to taborder and tabstop. For example if I hit that alt key in IE focus goes to the File menu and the shortcut letters for each menu choice are highlighted, so that's the area to investigate, those tab specs in the bootstrapper. For example if I hit that alt key in IE focus goes to the File menu and the shortcut letters for each menu choice are highlighted, so that's the area to investigate, those tab specs in the bootstrapper. There's a lot of funkiness with things like edit boxes being practically unusable (outside of specific supported scenarios) and not really being able to jump back forth between pages. I've been working on mocking up some type of solution. Sigh, I have set tabstop=no for all controls EXCEPT for the Next/Cancel buttons on my Welcome/Install page On my EULA/Options page I have set tabstop=no EXCEPT for EULA rich edit/accept Eula checkbox/ back/Install/Cancel buttons I have a background and side banner image on my Welcome/Install page I have a background image and a top banner image on EULA/Options page When I launch the Bootstrapper as soon as the Welcome/Install page shows up if I hit the ALT key the controls except for the images go in the background so I can't see them (all I see is the background image and the side banner image (which is on top of background) I am trying to mimic the look of our previous version which only was a MSI, I have the look down pat but the ALT is mucking things up! okay to see if it was my stuff that was messing up, I created a new boostrapper project I took the RTF theme xml/wxl from the 3.8 RTM source added my background.png (used MS Paint 500 x 390 light gray color saved as png) launch the bootstrapper and the background bitmap is covering the whole dialog except for the Title text, the install page controls are behind the bitmap, if I comment out that image element and add the background image to the Install page, looks good except most of the richedit control is covered by the background image, click Options to goto options page, click okay and the Install page looks fine... ?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
