As others, i prefere TightVNC, that now have a shining new .msi
installer with a docs full of specifications, and the dfmirage driver
are bakc, so there's also performance improvement.

Attached my recipe, still i use/prefere the 'save registry portion on a
working box and load elsewhere' method (with a -settings recipe), and
note that i install the dfmirage driver with dpinst and not with the
(broken) installer.

All for win xp 32bit, sorry.

Likewise we use TightVNC server on Windows XP desktops, with Remmina as
the client on Ubuntu.

We used UltraVNC for a few years before switching to TightVNC as
UltraVNC is so appalling, I'm trying to remember what was so agonising
about it but my memory is a bit hazy:

- Version 1.0.4 was a major new version over 1.0.2, but you wouldn't
think so by the version number, which says to me that the developers
don't know what they're doing, in getting something so obvious so wrong

- documentation on the web site was too scant, thus confusing

- it uses extensions to the VNC protocol for domain logon that are
non-standard

For laptops that roam outside of the organisation where you have your
VPN, I'd recommend additionally installing TeamViewer (though it costs
money for non-personal use).

This is what we do for TightVNC install or upgrade:

Add Microsoft Security Essentials whitelisting of TightVNC:

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft
Antimalware\Exclusions\Paths" /v "C:\Program
Files\TightVNC\tightvnc.exe" /d "" /t REG_DWORD /f 1>NUL 2>NUL

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft
Antimalware\Exclusions\Paths" /v "C:\Program
Files\TightVNC\screenhooks.dll" /d "" /t REG_DWORD /f 1>NUL 2>NUL

Install TightVNC:

%SOFTWARE%\tightvnc\tightvnc-2.0.4-setup.exe

Install the TightVNC Server as a service:

"%PROGRAMFILES%\TightVNC\tvnserver" -install -silent

Stop the TightVNC Server whilst we import settings

"%PROGRAMFILES%\TightVNC\tvnserver" -stop -silent

Import settings:

regedit /s "%SOFTWARE%\tightvnc\tightvnc-settings.reg

Restart the TightVNC Server:

"%PROGRAMFILES%\TightVNC\tvnserver" -start -silent

Hi,
we are currently deploying WPKG on around 100 desktops (with wpkg-gp)
and we'd like to have your suggestions on which program you use to
give remote assistance to your managed desktops. We are looking on
something like teamviewer/ammyy that could work with UAC and there the
user asking support in not an administrator of the computer. The ideal
solution would support linux as an "operator OS" as most of our IT
staff is on Linux. We've seen UltraVNC and all his "plugins" like DC
or helpware but we'd like to hear your opinion

We use TightVNC here, it's working on Win XP, Vista, 2003 Server, 2000
Server, and 7 (probably on other version too, but we've successfully
used it on all these versions).
We always connect to this VNC server using various Linux client (Fedora,
Arch, Ubuntu etc...). My favourite VNC client for Linux is remmina, but
vinagre and tigervnc also works great. We don't use reverse connections
thought (the IT crew always initiate the connection throught an SSH
tunnel when we're not in the client's network, remmina create the tunnel
for you, which is why I like it)

Here's our package definition for TightVNC:
https://wikit.firewall-services.com/doku.php?id=tuto:gestion_de_parc:wpkg:tightvnc

You just have to manuelly install it on one desktop, configure it like
you want (especially the passwords), then, save the settings in a file
named tightvnc.reg (in the same directory than the installer).

Regards, Daniel

Thanks
