Statement: Rev. Jesse Jackson Following Visit w/ Stanley Tookie Williams

“What is certain is that since 1992, “Tookie” has been a voice reaching out
to the voiceless. He has encouraged youth to lift themselves up so as not to
end up locked up. His voice has reached impoverished and alienated youth in
places police dare not tread. Through his personal transformation in prison, he
has brought light to dark places because he knows where to look

Statement of the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. Following His Visit
With San Quentin Death Row Inmate Stanley Tookie Williams

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 21, 2005

Press Contact:
Butch Wing

Tracy K. Rice, Esq.
(310) 994-8583

STATEMENT OF THE REV. JESSE L. JACKSON, SR. FOLLOWING HIS
VISIT WITH SAN QUENTIN DEATH ROW INMATE
STANLEY “TOOKIE” WILLIAMS

“Today I met with “Tookie” Williams, a man who is scheduled to be killed 17
days from today. We had prayer. At the conclusion of our one and a half hour
visit I told him ‘We are going to fight for you and we are going to win.' He
told me that his work here is not finished.

The State of California is gearing up its machinery of death based on the
assumption of the certainty of this man's guilt. The State has a plan of
certainty for his execution. Date certain. Time certain. But there is more
uncertainty about his guilt than there is necessity for execution,” Jackson
stated.

“Tookie” Williams is a changed man. He stands before Governor Swarzenegger
requesting clemency. There are those who state that he should not receive
clemency because he has not acknowledged guilt and remorse. But this is not
a legal requirement for clemency. It cannot be predicated upon a false or
coerced confession of guilt or remorse.

“What is certain is that since 1992, “Tookie” has been a voice reaching out
to the voiceless. He has encouraged youth to lift themselves up so as not to
end up locked up. His voice has reached impoverished and alienated youth in
places police dare not tread. Through his personal transformation in prison,
he has brought light to dark places because he knows where to look. He
speaks truth to power with a sincere knowledge of what lies ahead for these
youth and gives them a stark look at what their future could be if they
don't renounce gang life and all that it stands for. And they listen,
because he was one of them.

“Tookie Williams personifies what “Redemption” is all about. He has used his
time in prison to reach others and save lives. We may not be able to
quantify the number of children he has saved, but I am certain that there
are children in this country and abroad that would not be here had they not
received his powerful message.

In the days to come we will bear witness to our criminal justice system at
its lowest point. As California gears up for the taking of a life, the eyes
of the world are upon us. We must kill the idea of killing as a remedy to
societal problems and shortcomings. We do not condone “Tookie” Williams past
actions, however, the streets of California will be no safer on December 14
th should he be executed. In fact, there is reason to believe that they will
be even less safe as those he would have reached in his ongoing efforts to
stop children from joining gang life will never hear his message. remarked
Jackson.

“Today I have requested a meeting with Governor Schwarzenegger. I will urge
him to grant clemency and convert Tookie Williams' sentence to life without
possibility of parole. By granting clemency in this case he would be setting
an example of courage over cowardice, of humanity over brutality.
Commutation in this case would follow in the best traditions of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Cesar Chavez. Gov.
Swarzenegger has the ability to come down on the right side of history and
make it clear by this single act of courage that he remains committed to the
principles of justice.

I will also urge the Governor to halt all executions while the California
Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice conducts a thorough study
of the state's criminal justice procedures. This Commission was formed by
the state Senate in August 2004, “to study and review the administration of
criminal justice in California to determine the extent to which that process
has failed in the past, resulting in wrongful executions of innocent
persons.' There should be a moratorium on all executions pending the
completion of this official governmental body's investigation,” Jackson
declared.

The legislative findings will be presented to the Governor by December 31,
2007.

May I suggest a poem by James Schuyler called "Self-Pity Is A Kind of Lying, Too". The Buddha both does and doesn't exist, somehow he or his teachings are still a lot more than just another bone. There are relics, however. It was a big deal to the countries involved when a tooth of the Buddha was moved from one country to another, either from Myanmar to Thailand or vice versa. I don't remember which, anymore direction the tooth took or in which it was taken. Anyway, good luck in recovering from self-pity. I hope it doesn't take too long. Sri Lanka is once again
in peril with its national integrity. Sovereignty Of Sri Lanka is being assailed
by the most dangerous group of terrorists, the LTTE. It is ironical and sad but
true that some of the arms and ammunition which the LTTE used to attack the
Sacred Temple of the Tooth, the innocent pilgrims worshipping at the sacred Bo Tree at
Anuradhapura and what they will use in future for similar murders of the
innocent should have come via Thailand our friendly Buddhist
neighbour.

By 'Buddha' I was referencing karma, reincarnation, etc. I read a lot of
Buddhist texts (I'm incapable of meditating), and I do have problems with
these concepts. My 'Buddhism' - which is there - is a highly filtered one,
dispensing with meditation (ha) and a lot of the rest - on the other hand,
the logics, sutras such as Vimalakirti, etc. are intensely moving.

The Darwin exhibition frightening off corporate sponsors

By Nicholas Wapshott in New York

An exhibition celebrating the life of Charles Darwin has
failed to find a corporate sponsor because American
companies are anxious not to take sides in the heated
debate between scientists and fundamentalist Christians
over the theory of evolution.

The entire $3 million (?1.7 million) cost of Darwin,
which opened at the American Museum of Natural History
in New York yesterday, is instead being borne by wealthy
individuals and private charitable donations.

The failure of American companies to back what until
recently would have been considered a mainstream
educational exhibition reflects the growing influence of
fundamentalist Christians, who are among President
George W Bush's most vocal supporters, over all walks of
life in the United States.

While the Darwin exhibition has been unable to find a
business backer - unlike previous exhibitions at the
museum - the Creationist Museum near Cincinatti, Ohio,
which takes literally the Bible's account of creation,
has recently raised $7 million in donations.

The outbreak of corporate cold feet has shocked New
York's intellectuals. It is a disgrace that large
companies should shy away from such an important
scientific exhibition, said a trustee of another
prominent museum in the city, who was told of the
exhibition's funding problem by a trustee of the AMNH.

They tried to find corporate sponsors, but everyone
backed off.

Creationism is increasingly widely backed in America. A
CBS News poll last month found that 51 per cent of
Americans reject the theory of evolution, believing
instead that God created humans in their present form.
Another poll in August found that 38 per cent of
Americans think that creationism should be taught in
schools, instead of evolution.

In Dover, Pennsylvania, last week, a jury began
considering a case brought by parents against a school
board that insisted that intelligent design, which
argues that a supernatural force populated the earth, be
taught alongside evolution in science classes.

The AMNH is coy about its failure to find corporate
money to mount the exhibition, which will tour the US
before moving to London's Natural History Museum in 2009
to mark the bicentenary of Darwin's birth.

Asked which companies had refused to give money, Gary
Zarr, the museum's marketing director, said he would
have to ask those concerned before he could identify
them.

Steve Reichl, a press officer for the AMNH, said a list
of forthcoming exhibitions was sent to potential
sponsors and none wanted to back the Darwin exhibition.
He declined to reveal which companies, or how many, had
been approached.

The Bank of America previously sponsored a similar
exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci and the financial
services provider TIAA-CREF funded an Albert Einstein
show.

A prominent Metropolitan Museum donor said: You can
understand why the Museum of Natural History might not
want to admit such a thing.

They are concerned about finding corporate funding for
exhibitions in the future.

The museum will have to depend more heavily upon the
profits of its Darwin-related merchandise to finance the
cost of staging the exhibition, including a 12-inch
Darwin doll, Darwin finger puppets and, for a $950, a
replica of the vessel Beagle, made in China and
assembled in Vietnam.

Niles Eldredge, the exhibition's curator, confirmed that
the exhibition was intended to redress the balance in
the battle between scientists and creationist Christians
being fought across the country.

This is for the schoolchildren of America, he said.
This is the evidence of evolution.

It's unbelievable. I keep thinking continuously how thin civilization,
whatever passes for enlightenment, is. Look at the letters of Pliny the
Younger, or all those poets writing towards the end of the Roman Empire.
Things are always near collapse; belief and inerrancy are just around the
corner. It's always frightening and there's no relief. I just read Mark
Twain on King Leopold II's actions in the Congo - around 1905 - there were
fifteen million killed, more or less on his orders - the population of the
Congo dropped from 25m to 10m...
