Re: [WSG] Accessibility and Joomla
I believe that with the new version (1.5) it is much easier to make sites accessible. And thanks William for your suggestion of DW extensions. I did a search and found one that looks really good. It's expensive ($US100) but has great reviews on the Joomla extensions site, and includes a 1 hour training video. And it's all about the Joomla 'template' which is where all the formatting/CSS is organised. My work will hopefully buy this for me (grin) We shall see ... :) On 23/5/08 12:19 PM, dwain [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 5/22/08, Susie Gardner-Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm just starting to (try to!) learn Joomla as I'm going to have to use it on a few upcoming sites. [WSG] My Website query
Hi. 1. well, need to download the ati radian display drivers for this Del Latitude laptop. so that is why jaws not reading properly. 2. now, could you take a look at my site, and let me know, how to increase the font, or maybe change it from percentage font size to actual font point size. if you have any vision, or maybe ask some sighted colleagues or friends, what sizes, for all elements on the page do i need to change it to? maybe you have some web designers, you know. if i download jaws 9.1, what performance would i get out of this upgrade? any use to download and install this one? 3. now, was wondering, could you take a look at my 80s history page. if my parents stumbled on to it, might get the fourth degree. so can you take a look at the content, and maybe suggest, how i could maybe tone down the information, or tone down the way the text is written to be more appealing to those reading it, and maybe even be a bit more conservative. 4. now, looking for some accessability tools to check to see if my pages pass all vallidation, for people with all sorts of disabilities, like colour blind, colour dependent, flickering, and passes all vallidation via w3c, and also section 508. can you suggest some tools, and also, to check for correct colour, broken links, and maybe off line, as not always on the net, so i could download and run andcheck off line, as editing off line at the moment. if you can help, or pass on my message maybe to some of those that you do know, that could help, let me know asap. 5. Now, when i read using the paragraph mode, when i go to my headings and list of links, the navigation and the Other links, read all in one list, but on the Star Trek Links , they read one at a time using paragraph mode. How can i get all the links to read the same on the page? cheers Marvin. -- http://startrekcafe.stevesdomain.net/ http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/JawsOz/ *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***
Re: [WSG] My Website query
Hi Marvin, Your website has some major design issues that you should probably address. For starters, your background wallpaper really reduces legibility, and the dark green doesn't show up very well against the black. Also, all of your navigation links are illegible at their current font size, I have to increase the font size at least 3 times before the navigation becomes remotely legible (this is probably because you're using percentages, and at values less than 100%). Consider using em, px, or pt values instead of percentages - if you do use percentages, consider 100% you're base value and only go higher for larger text (ie, 120%, 140%, 160%, etc). There are also some copyright issues with your site in that you're using some images like the Ford logo and a Star Trek wallpaper likely without permission and without copyright or trademark indications. Be very careful about just taking images from other websites and using them as your own. You might also want to develop some content for your website before you make it live. There doesn't seem to much there. [WSG] Conditional styles not being used on first-run

No, its not. In this case, if any single browser breaks a related script, then the mark-up cannot be used - working on the majority is not enough to make it viable. Does that mean we should drop the ABBR element because IE can't handle it properly? In what way is that the same as the (ab)use in question? RE: [WSG] accessibility/usability in a poll: check a radio button when focusing on a text input field
It MIGHT be possible to use CSS alone to show/hide the text field depending on the last option being clicked, but it would need a lot of testing. It would certainly be far easier to do this in JS, and as this is only an enhancement, not required functionality, I don't see an issue with doing it that way, unless you have a very specific user-base? Regards, Mike From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Julián Landerreche Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 5:58 AM To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Subject: [WSG] accessibility/usability in a poll: check a radio button when focusing on a text input field Hi. Probably this can't be done without (unobstrusive) Javascript. In simple polls, sometimes there is an Other option that is also provided with a text input so visitors can give some feedback on this other option. Like this: ( ) Option 1 (o) Option 2 ( ) Option 3 ( ) Other: [ I prefer this option because... ] The problem is: In that example, the user has filled in the text input on the Other option, but the selected radio is still the Option 2 So, when the user focus/clicks directly on the text input field, the corresponding radio button (Other) isn't selected. Then, he submits the poll, but because he didn't choose the Other option, he really didn't submit the option he thought he has chosen. The desired behavior (selecting the Other radio button when focusing on the text input field) will probably be easily achievable with some JS, right? But here I am, asking to this list if you know a better approach to this issue. Thanks. *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***

Sounds like IE6 is caching the original stylesheet. This is entirely expected as it increases performance and responsiveness for the user on subsequent page loads. There is no nice way around it. Hi Mike, This is how I understood your posts in the context of this thread: Jason: you cannot reference a fieldset through DOM unless it is inside a form Hassan: An easy theory to test, and hence, to prove utterly wrong Mike: I am doubtful that you managed to test every browser version known to mankind before you replied - one or two combinations doesn't really make effective proof! Hassan: Au contraire, one is enough to prove the contention wrong Mike: No, its not. In this case, if any single browser breaks a related script, then the mark-up cannot be used To me, it sounds like you're saying that if a script breaks in a browser because of how a particular element behaves in relation to the DOM, then that element should not be used. And this is why I mentioned ABBR since IE lt 7 creates extra nodes that makes most CSS and script fail. Re: [WSG] Conditional styles not being used on first-run
Hi Try sticking a revision number on the style/script url like so: href/src=/path/to/file?r=12 Browsers will download and cache that link (depending on the cache settings of the browser/ web server / proxy). When you make a revision to the file, bump the revision number: href/src=/path/to/file?r=13 The browser will then download the new revision as it doesn't match what it is in the cache. If you use a revision control system like (svn, bazaar, git etc etc) this can be done to some extent automagically with some server side scripting by looking up the revision number of the file in question and tacking it on the the query string (you don't want to do that on every http request so it's best to try and do it statically whenever the file is changed e.g by creating an html template ready for inclusion) - otherwise just bump the revision numbers manually. There are other methods to look at when dealing with caching including the HTTP headers that are sent by your web server which tell browsers and proxies if and how they should cache files. That's a large topic in itself so I'd suggest googling for some basic caching how-tos to get started. If it's a caching issue, as Matt Fellows suggests, consider versioning your CSS -- naming it screen_1_2.css for example. The name change will ensure that the old one is not used. Giving images, CSS, and scripts a far future expires date will speed up subsequent visits to your site, but does have the effect of sticking in the cache like this, as it is intended to do.
