You cannot mess around with legal documents
by removing or changing numbering.

If you can't code it up in html, it might be
better to use pre or even to publish it in pdf.

Subject: [WSG] legal list numbering

How do people get around the problem of marking up ordered lists in
legal documents, such as policies or terms and conditions?

A typical structure might look like:

1 blah blah blah
1.1 blah blah blah
1.2 blah blah blah
1.2.1 blah blah blah
1.2.2 blah blah blah
1.3 blah blah blah
2 blah blah blah
2.1 blah blah blah
2.1.1 blah blah blah*

I've seen a variety of convoluted javascript and CSS methods, but
they're all hacks for what is essentially a pretty logical
structure... nested ordered lists!

I have to admit, I haven't even checked whether this is addressed in
html 5.

* BTW: I've read lots of legal documents and I reckon the text can
mostly be replaced with blah blah blah without affecting their
meaning.

RE: [WSG] Fixed Sidebar Fluid Content - Source Order Limitations

2009-08-17 Thread Mark Huppert
Ben

If the window gets below a certain width,
then inevitably the content must pop up
above the fixed width sidebar. That is the whole point
of the content first approach, I thought.

It's true that with an extremely wide screen a
gap will open up. I guess if that's a problem for your
client, then it's your problem.

Another way to handle this is to use javascript to
manually adjust the style settings according to the
screen size.

Hi Kepler,

You may want to try max-width on your main content. I'm not sure if
that will work for you since you didn't post a link.

I tried max- and min-width in a few combinations and could not get it
to work (and makes my content no longer fluid ).

Hi Mark

Thanks for the sample code. The problem with that approach is that if
the window is too small the sidebar will drop down. If it is too large
my content area will grow but I will introduce a big gap between the
sidebar and the content.

The markup below demonstrates what I currently have. Works great but I
suspect content-first source ordering is impossible:

htmlhead
titletest/title
style type=text/css
#cont {
padding:10px;
margin-left: 220px;
}
#sidebar {
float:left;
background: #DD;
margin: 10px;
margin-right:0px;
font-size:90%;
width:200px;
}
/style
/head
body
div id=wrap

div id=sidebar
 Sidebar Sidebar Sidebar Sidebar Sidebar Sidebar Sidebar Sidebar
Sidebar
/div

div id=contcontent
content content content content content content content content content
content
content content content content content content content content content
content
content content content content content content content content content
content
content content content content content content content content content
content
content content
/div

/div

Subject: [WSG] Fixed Sidebar Fluid Content - Source Order Limitations

Hi Everyone,

I am working on a site with a fixed sidebar panel and fluid content.
After some research I think I have discovered a CSS source order
limitation particular to this layout. Can anyone confirm whether this
sounds correct:

- To put my content first in the markup, my content needs to be floated
(for a following sidebar)

- My content is fluid, so I can not assign a width

- According http://css.maxdesign.com.au/floatutorial/introduction.htm
you must set an explicit width on a floated elemented except img tags as
per the W3C (he references
http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/visuren.html#floats, but I can not find exact
statement).

- Therefore my fluid content can not appear with in my markup, my fixed
width sidebar must appear first and be floated instead.

Does that sound right? Regardless of W3C I could not get my content to
remain fluid, come first in the markup and still allow my fixed-width
sidebar to float up beside it.

Thanks for any feedback.

Ben Davies

Subject: [WSG] DIV Javascript Problem

Hi All

I was wondering if I can pick all your brains on an issue I am facing.
I am not a big coder and good when it comes to JavaScript. I have
recently
taken charge of maintaining a website for a client who uses divs to
display
data onto a .htm page. They do not want to use .php and mysql data
basing as
they are worried about losing their ranking in the search engines.
Here is an extract of the coding.

script language=javascript src=rates.js/script -
obviously
imports the divs with the prices attached.
body onLoad=loadPrices('ox001, ment001 ,hvh001 ,vhw001')

And in the .htm document I have the code.
div id=hvh001/div

So I was wondering why this does not always work and especially when I
seem
to update pages using dreamweaver.
I dunno how this works or why it even works.
I am trying to convince the client to turn their whole site into a
database
driven site so these problems don't happen and you do not have bad code
however we all have clients who do not wish to listen so any advice
would be
great.

I've switched from XHTML to HTML and I've added an experimental layout

Please report any content issues.

Please report any problems in FFox 3.5.

Known issue: The checkmarks (✓) do not work in MSIE or Webkit based

2009-03-02 Thread Mark Huppert
I don't where Nick is from, but part of the
explanation in our case is hits from computer
labs on campus. The biggest set of labs have IE,
Firefox and Safari but Chrome is not in the build.

I would humbly suggest that a blog site for geeks
will naturally get lots hits from the latest
cutting-edge whatever. Sites like that do not
represent the general population very accurately.
