Could you try to quantify “greatly”?

I have tested “lag” on FT8 and with Poll set to 1s and I see immediate (within

It is very likely you need the correct device driver.

You need a device driver for an ICOM IC-7100, IC-7200, IC-7300, IC-7600,
IC-7610, IC-7850, IC-9100, PCR2500, Kenwood TS-990S, TS-590S, Elecraft KX3,

The USB/UART Bridge chip inside the Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood radios is a Silicon
Labs USB to UART Bridge Controller and the device drivers are available here:

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X 2.5.3 GA Release for macOS

2021-12-14 Thread John Nelson via wsjt-devel
Hi Joe,

This morning I checked the DMG download on 12.0.1 and also 12.1 on an Intel
MacBook Pro. There were no problems. I currently use 11.6.1.

I have received reports of DMG download for 10.13 through 10.15; 11.6.1 and
12, so if you wish to re-do the earlier change on your web-site: "Version 2.5.3
for macOS 10.13 through 12” this should avoid queries about whether the
download would work for 12.1.

It must be stressed that these reports refer only to confirmation that the
wsjtx-2.5.3-Darwin.dmg unpacks and installs correctly on Intel Macs as well as
M1 Macs with Rosetta, but do not make statements about matters relating to
WSJT-X 2.5.3 code. This clearly needs more in depth testing to evaluate the
new features.

I am not able to generate a native M1 package.

Thanks to all who sent reports.

I am saddened to learn of your news. This is blow to the WSJT-X community.

In the early days of Bill’s involvement with WSJT he often logged into my Macs
at home to test his software modifications on a Mac until he got a VM working.
He and I had numerous discussions while testing new versions on various Mac OS.
  He was generous with his time in helping folks with problems either running
the codes or attempting to build the software on various platforms.The
multitude of emails to the development list is a tribute to his commitment to
ensure that the various programs operated flawlessly.

His involvement with the development of WSJT-X code especially with modernising
the structure of the whole program has been immense. I will certainly miss

2021-09-09 Thread John Nelson via wsjt-devel
Hi Mike,

This is a report using wsjtx-2.5.0-rc6;  MacOS Catalina 10.15.7;

Using Kenwood TS-870s a thread with kenwood-set-vfo crashes when configuring
the Radio panel; pressing CAT will cause a crash, also just selecting rig for
Split. Occasionally kenwood-open is shown in the failing thread.

1. I have compiled my own version on 2.5.0-rc6 and the same fault is present.
 This is using hamlib 4.4 same as official 2.5.0-rc6 release.
2. Then recompiled hamlib 4.2 and remade my version of 2.5.0. No crashes
occur and the code is working correctly so I have to conclude that there is a
Kenwood problem with hamlib 4.4

Testing with FT8 on 20m. I have been very busy here on work related matters
so this is the first time I have tested 2.5.0-rc…so cannot comment on earlier
versions.

2021-02-17 Thread John Nelson via wsjt-devel
Bill,

I have guided David (via landline) to get wsjtx to launch. The immediate
problem appears to be a failure of wsjtx to be installed in the Applications
folder by using the normal installation procedure of dragging the WSJT-X icon
on top of the Applications icon in the dmg panel.This only results in an
alias being created in the Applications folder pointing to /Volumes….. A
Terminal command cd /Applications/wsjtx.app results in no such file etc.
(?!)

Next I got David to drag the WSJT-X icon from the dmg panel directly to an open
Applications folder. This worked. I am expecting further emails but for the
moment, I will take care of getting this solved.

The only evidence for that is the fact that WSJT-X on an M1 Mac fails with a
shared memory error and has no problems on an Intel Mac. I now have a report
from a VK about a memory error on another M1 Mac.

I have checked the sysctl.conf file on the M1 Mac by asking for a hexdump of

On the M1 Mac what is shown with sysctl -a | grep kern.sysv after a reboot is

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJTX-2.3.0-rc2

2020-11-18 Thread John Nelson via wsjt-devel
Hi Bill,

Further to the WSJT-X + Big Sur + M1 problem, three conclusions have been
reached following tests with my correspondent:

1. The M1 page size is 4k and not 16k
2. It seems that the M1 version of Big Sur does not get the shared memory
information from /etc/sysctl.conf
3. If kern.sysv.shmmax and kern.sysv.shmall are directly written to via
terminal commands (104857600 and 25600 respectively) then WSJT-X loads and
runs.

The snag here is that these kern.sysv values do not survive a reboot - although
this has to be tested. Next step is to find out how to set the shared memory
configuration in a permanent way.   Tomorrow’s job…

Agreed. Which is why I am puzzled that, given all the libboost*.dylib
libraries, that the linker cannot find a dynamic linked symbol in a dylib.

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJTX-2.3.0-rc2 compile error

2020-11-16 Thread John Nelson via wsjt-devel
Hi Bill,

Understood. But then I will await your further investigations on the linking
problem which I initially sent to you.

I would prefer not to have to modify files.
---
It has found what it seems to need. The problem about linking remains:

Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64:
 "boost::log::v2_mt_posix::attributes::timer::timer()", referenced from:
 Logger::(anonymous
namespace)::CommonInitialization::CommonInitialization() in
libwsjt_cxx.a(Logger.cpp.o)
—

vt_mt_posix is part of a dynamic link library so it is a mystery why the
symbols mentioned are undefined.

Hope you can solve this one.

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJTX-2.3.0-rc2 compile error

2020-11-16 Thread John Nelson via wsjt-devel
Hi Bill,

I have found a solution.

1.   remade the boost libraries with:b2  link=static  runtime-link=static
install

2. made three changes to CMakeLists.txt

79,80d78
< # JMN Added next line
< set (Boost_USE_STATIC_RUNTIME ON)
1067c1065
< #target_compile_definitions (wsjt_cxx PUBLIC BOOST_LOG_DYN_LINK)
---
> target_compile_definitions (wsjt_cxx PUBLIC BOOST_LOG_DYN_LINK)
1315c1313
< #target_compile_definitions (wsjt_qt PUBLIC UDP_STATIC_DEFINE
BOOST_LOG_DYN_LINK)
---
> target_compile_definitions (wsjt_qt PUBLIC UDP_STATIC_DEFINE
> BOOST_LOG_DYN_LINK)

Now linking uses static libraries. Not sure why BOOST_LOG_DYN_LINK is there -
contradicts  USE_STATIC_RUNTIIME

Compiled version is running but will make further tests…

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJTX-2.3.0-rc2 compile error

2020-11-16 Thread John Nelson via wsjt-devel
Hi Bill,

> all that should be needed after building and installing the Boost libraries
> is to include the path where they are installed in the CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH

CMake knows there the boost libraries are. For instance:

-- Building wsjtx v2.3.0.0-rc2
-- Found Boost 1.70.0 at /usr/local/lib/cmake/Boost-1.70.0
-- Requested configuration: QUIET REQUIRED COMPONENTS log_setup;log
-- Found boost_headers 1.70.0 at /usr/local/lib/cmake/boost_headers-1.70.0
-- Found boost_log_setup 1.70.0 at /usr/local/lib/cmake/boost_log_setup-1.70.0
--   libboost_log_setup.a
-- Adding boost_log_setup dependencies:
atomic;chrono;date_time;filesystem;log;regex;thread;headers
-- Found boost_atomic 1.70.0 at /usr/local/lib/cmake/boost_atomic-1.70.0
--   libboost_atomic.a
…
-- Found boost_thread 1.70.0 at /usr/local/lib/cmake/boost_thread-1.70.0
--   libboost_thread.a
-- Adding boost_thread dependencies: headers

It has found what it seems to need. The problem about linking remains:

Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64:
  "boost::log::v2_mt_posix::attributes::timer::timer()", referenced from:
  Logger::(anonymous
namespace)::CommonInitialization::CommonInitialization() in
libwsjt_cxx.a(Logger.cpp.o)

and many more similarly.

/usr/local/lib has:

file libboost*.dylib
libboost_atomic.dylib:   Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared
library x86_64
libboost_chrono.dylib:   Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared
library x86_64
libboost_container.dylib:Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared
library x86_64

What symbols are not defined in the dylibs…?

The problem at link time is:

Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64:
  "boost::log::v2_mt_posix::attributes::timer::timer()", referenced from:
  Logger::(anonymous
namespace)::CommonInitialization::CommonInitialization() in

The only slight glitch is that rig numbers have changed. Whereas Kenwood

changed so that these are rigs 2010 and 2007 respectively. It seems that an
additional 0 has been added after the leading manufacturer ID. Not a problem

Re: [wsjt-devel] USB-D on VFOB

2019-12-18 Thread John Nelson via wsjt-devel
This extract from the User Guide Section 4.2 might help to explain why Split
mode is useful:

---
Split Operation: Significant advantages result from using Split mode (separate
VFOs for Rx and Tx) if your radio supports it. If it does not, WSJT-X can
emulate such behavior. Either method will result in a cleaner transmitted
signal, by keeping the Tx audio always in the range 1500 to 2000 Hz so that
audio harmonics cannot pass through the Tx sideband filter. Select Rig to use
the radio’s Split mode, or Fake It to have WSJT-X adjust the VFO frequency as
needed, when T/R switching occurs. Choose None if you do not wish to use split
operation.

This refers to your comment to Steve:

—
it looks like there's a common thread emerging with strings passed between C++
and Fortran. I squashed one of these before the release but it seems there are
others. I think it is related to a Fortran compiler upgrade on my build
machine. The problem is almost certainly that some of our code is using
techniques for passing C strings to Fortran that are not guaranteed to be well
defined and the later versions of gfortran are not assuming that those
techniques should work. I do have a background branch in progress to move all
C++/Fortran boundary crossing code to more robust use of ISO_C_BINDING, I guess
that will have to be promoted to a higher priority.
—

The work-around concerning LoTW does not cure this Fortran problem.
