Re: [wsjt-devel] Bug Report: Version 1.9.1
You seem intent on proving there is something wrong with vista or wsjt-x. Do you use any other digital mode programs for say psk31 or SSTV ?. I would maybe suggest using one of those and see if they lock up when you tune. I fail to see why you are looking at your operating system or the software for the issue when the majority who have already suffered the same issue have accepted that it is stray RF to blame, but you are totally unwilling to even test. Your windows is locking because the drivers are old and your OS does most likely does not like the USB to get interrupted if you stop the initial disconnect caused by the stray RF then your PC will not lock up. You have 2 options upgrade to a new OS or spend $5 on a decent USB cable. I will not bother you again as you do not read anything that does not fit your belief that there is an issue with software that thousands of people are using currently using and most have cured the issue by stopping the RFI. Re: [wsjt-devel] DXpedition Mode on 40 Meters?
I do not understand why the dxp mode cannot be used on the standard FT8 freqs, ft8 users do not want the junk on their freqs but are quite happy to walk all over everyone else is that the modern day version of the ham spirit :(. I keep reading that band blocks cannot be put in but that is a lie as wspr is protected from other modes in wsjt-x from transmitting on a wspr freq. I cannot believe people are saying this was unforeseen as I said what would happen last year. The mode is a brilliant idea but uncontrolled operations are causing a massive bad feeling. The team quite often make betas that can only be used by certain callsigns and I believe all versions should have hound capability but the fox mode should be dished out as only working for certain callsigns and only if there has been an application to the dev team. I am fully aware that this can be got around as I do it myself every time Joe forces this with certain versions but the average user will not do it and at least the team can wash their hands of it if someone has played with the code and causes havoc and bad feeling. I fully expect this to be ignored as were my warnings last year but at least I have suggested an alternative to minimise the damage this new feature is doing to the reputation of the software in general. I do believe the popularity of FT8 has made the users arrogant and it will become now like every weekend on ssb a mess with contests ruining the bands but instead everybody believing they are a valid dxp station and deserve to be able to trash a section of the band and damn the existing users as they are not important anyway. Hi all I do not think that pleading for “good operating sensibilities and consideration for others” will do much good. I did query ages ago when this mode was 1st being mentioned that if it was a good idea but got shouted down. All I see nowadays is people answering a cq then deciding to call cq themselves elsewhere but having not bothering to read the manual 1st fail to take their tx with them and proceed to call cq on the previous still occupied frequency. I have lost count of the people I have emailed to explain that just clicking on the waterfall does not move the tx and that they need to hold the CTRL button when clicking if they want the tx to move with the click of the mouse. I understand the developers are assuming that most operators will read the manual and have some common sense and while I admire their optimism the reality is not matching their expectations After general release everybody will think they are special and I can see havoc with multiple stations using the new mode think they are the only ones entitled to do it. Richard G7OED -Original Message- From: Joe Taylor Sent: Friday, February 2, 2018 5:53 PM To: wsjt-devel@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [wsjt-devel] FT8 DXpedition Mode Hi all, You have probably heard something about recent efforts to develop a special "FT8 DXpedition Mode" in WSJT-X. This message aims to bring you up-to-date on our progress, and generally to make our plans more widely known. The basic goal of *FT8 DXpedition Mode* is to enable DXpeditions to make FT8 QSOs at the highest possible rates. We have been working together with members of the Baker Island (KH1/KH7Z) group. Their planned expedition will take place in June-July 2018. Like most major DXpeditions, this one will almost certainly make a majority of its QSOs using SSB and CW. However, the group is well aware of the rapid rise of FT8 popularity, and they plan to use FT8 as well. Making FT8 QSOs with KH1/KH7Z will require the DXpedition and everyone trying to work them to use a new, yet-to-be-released version of WSJT-X. We have tested the new program features on the air several times, and found them to work well. Another test run will probably be scheduled in a month or so. There will be plenty of advance publicity inviting others to upgrade to a "Release Candidate" called WSJT-X v1.9.0-rc1, and to join in trying to work one or more specific "pseudo-DXpedition" stations at a certain time and frequency. In this way, we hope to continue shaking bugs out of the program and generally to improve its usability -- both for the DX operator and those seeking to work him. FT8 DXpedition mode includes a number of new and innovative features. For further details on what's in store, I draw your attention to a draft of the "FT8 DXpedition Mode User Guide" posted here: http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/FT8_DXpedition_Mode.pdf With best wishes, -- 73, Joe, K1JT, for the WSJT Development Group -- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot ___ wsjt-devel mailing list wsjt-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/wsjt-devel --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus -- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot ___ wsjt-devel mailing list wsjt-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/wsjt-devel

As you will have seen in previous posts by Steve and me -- based on use of a stand-alone, single-purpose program -- the 2-pass scheme produces significantly more decodes from crowded band segments. In both passes it uses the "sfrsd" algorithm rather than the patented, closed-source algorithm of kvasd. Here's an update on the table I shared here on 10/2/2015, summarizing JT65 decoding performance of JT65-HF-HB9HQX-Edition and several versions of WSJT-X. All programs analyzed exactly the same data, recorded (by WSJT-X r5912) on 20 meters. Correct False Program Decodes Decodes Decoder JT65-HF2329 24BM + kvasd WSJT-X r5912 2249 0BM + kvasd WSJT-X r5955 2114 0BM + sfrsd WSJT-X r5955 1816 0BM only WSJT-X r6020 2874 0BM + sfrsd (N=1000) + 2-pass If you've been following SVN updates and relevant posts made here you will know that I've also been experimenting with "experience-based" decoding of JT65 signals. So far this has been done in SVN trunk, the WSJT branch. I will soon start work on merging this code into WSJT-X. This will require making some distinction between HF-style "multi-decoding" of all JT65 signals found in the received passband, and VHF/UHF/Microwave/EME-style decoding where one (or a small number) signals are expected to be present in the passband. The new JT65 decoder has some user-adjustable parameters (see attached screen shot of the "Settings | Advanced" tab). At present the only one activated is a spinner that sets the number of random erasure patterns tried in the sfrsd algorithm. The default setting is "6", which sets variable ntrials = 1000. Other settings as follows: Setting ntrials -- 0 0 ==> BM only 1 3 2 10 3 30 4 100 5 300 6 1,000 7 3,000 8 10,000 9 30,000 10100,000 11300,000 12 1,000,000 Bigger numbers generally mean slower decodes. That's my suspicion too and knowing that the Windows sample rate conversion capability has been pretty poor in older versions makes me think that this may be related to that. I have no idea how each version of Windows deals with two applications asking for different sample rate streams from the same input device. I would hope that each device is run at the specified default sample rate and all streams are derived from that converting rate if necessary. OTOH there are usually options in the driver advanced properties about exclusive access that imply there can be a first come first served (at the requested sample rate) basis. So the order of starting applications might be a factor. Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X JT65A Decode performance
My sample rate is 1 channel 16 bit 48000 Hz This is the interface built into the IC-7100 I do have a spare zlp interface so will get it out tomorrow and run the jt65-hf-hb9hqx from that and wsjt-x from the built in interface, this way it will be different soundcard interfaces with the same radio. I can run on 2 different computers but as the jt65 variant decodes at 42.3 it is finished before wsjt-x even starts to decode. Do you want me to leave the zlp interface at it's default settings or set as the built in unit at 48000Hz ?. This would mean that verifying this would require two separate systems taking analog audio from a single receiver or perhaps a system with two sound cards. > > -- Joe 73 Bill G4WJS. > > > On 9/16/2015 4:01 PM, Bill Somerville wrote: >> On 16/09/2015 20:53, Bill Somerville wrote: >>> I don't have the full decode lists for those but the OMs that sent them >>> can easily capture more examples so I will ask for the full list of >>> decodes from both applications with some new examples. >> Looking at the files above, I doubt there are any other decodes apart >> from the ones that WSJT-X gets as they are all on the last dregs of a >> closing 15m band. >> >> 73 >> Bill >> G4WJS. -- Monitor Your Dynamic Infrastructure at Any Scale With Datadog! Hi Bill My soundcard was on 44 changed it to 48 and it now decodes everything that the jt65-fh variants decode. They are all using the same soundcard and radio ? I have attached a screenshot of the very limited test that I carried out. The wsjtx version was 5819 Ensure that you have set the default soundcard sample rate to at least 48kHz, this is required for WSJT-X to perform correctly. AFAIK the JT65-HF programs use an 11.25kHz sample stream which will be optimally derived from a soundcard set at 44.1kHz. 44.1kHz sample rate is usually the default and is considered the consumer maximum sample rate. You should be aware that the jt65-hf variants all use the same decoding engine which was released with an old variant of WSJT and we are quite confident that the decoding ability of the current WSJT-X is considerably improved in both speed and resolution over that rather ancient version. The band hopping schedule is not something that can be changed without changing it for everyone, the intent is to congregate all band hoppers on the same bands at the same time to maximize the number of spots posted to wsprnet.org. OTOH the latest version of WSJT-X allows you to include any band with a defined WSPR working frequency in you band hopping schedule and they will be randomly picked whenever a coordinated schedule band slot is not available. So for example if you tick the 6m and 4m check boxes in the Day schedule and un-tick the bands that will not have useful daytime DX propagation like 160m, 80m, 60m, 40m and 30m then 4m and 6m may be scheduled in the now vacant HF slots slots. I will be honest i'm not at all literate in FFT effects so may have completely the wrong end of the stick here.. I use split because I can tx a full 5 watts in the centre of the waterfall but as I go below 1000 or above 2000 my power drops off. Now I use split the tx moves so i'm back to 5 watts, if I can see them I can tx the maximum rf at them without having to play with my vfo. I maybe wrong but I assumed (always a bad idea) that this was the purpose of the split mode in wsjtx, I turn split off for wspr if I use it. Re: [wsjt-devel] Wanted: Feedback on WSPR in WSJT-X
Hi Joe You could release as v.1.6.0-devel r as you do now with the revision number and point your site to a repository. You could even do nightly builds, I have a linux sat box and the openpli boys do nightly builds and stable builds with a caveat that nightly builds may have unwanted features (crashes :) ), there are a few opensource people that do this. As a rule the coders code and a non coder would sort out the posting of the nightly builds etc. On the psk reporter statistics there used to be a few users of the latest builds nowadays the numbers have gone up WSJT-X v1.6.1-devel r5418 has 56 users so the interest is there in the new builds, it's getting the users to feedback the bugs. Many users shy from building themselves even though the JTSDK makes it easy for even non coders like myself to build the latest releases. Richard m0clz -Original Message- From: Joe Taylor Sent: Tuesday, June 02, 2015 2:02 AM To: WSJT software development Subject: [wsjt-devel] Wanted: Feedback on WSPR in WSJT-X Hi all, The feature list of WSJT-X Version 1.6 continues to grow. A number of good things are still to come: for example, - EME Doppler calculations using the JPL Planetary Ephemeris - Improved message averaging for JT4 - Correlation decoding and message averaging for JT65 - WSPR-15 mode - EME Echo mode - User Guide sections on WSPR and VHF+ features ... as well as some much needed behind-the scenes changes such as refactoring of mainwindow.cpp into smaller pieces, etc., etc. Notwithstanding the sizable list of "To Do" items, I think it would be useful to get some more feedback from users on the way WSPR is implemented in WSJT-X. I'd like to post a message on the WSPRnet.org site saying that WSPR mode is now available in a beta release of WSJT-X, and that we'd like to get some feedback from experienced WSPR users. Does anyone see a significant downside to doing this ? If we do the above, what should a released beta be called? It's not really a GA release candidate yet, so maybe v1.6.0-rc1 is not the right thing to call it? Is there a good reason to wait until after a v1.5.0 GA release ? -- 73, Joe, K1JT -- ___ wsjt-devel mailing list wsjt-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/wsjt-devel - No virus found in this message. Hi Claude I'm not a programmer i'm just an impatient user who compiles so he doesn't have to wait. I check https://sourceforge.net/p/wsjt/wsjt/HEAD/tree/ If it says /branches/wsjtx_exp then I know that 1.6.1 has been updated so I compile and hope it runs (99% run so far) If it says /branches/wsjtx Then I know that 1.6 has been updated and unless there is a request here for people to test it then I ignore it and wait for the next 1.6.1 updates. As I say i'm not a programmer I can test new revisions as they come out and I find the method above the easiest way of keeping track of what is happening. I have picked up little bits as I go along but I am a very long way from being able to give any useful help on the programming side of things. Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X: automatic processing of received messages enhancements
The double clicking on the incoming text is good for people like my wife who is nervous of making a mistake and though she never does make a mistake is always worried about making one. Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X: automatic processing of receivedmessagesenhancements
Hi Bill I don't remember but I normally just click the cq tx 6 button then enable tx, I do not remember if it was odd or even. It called cq once but I had started at about 10 seconds so didn't expect a reply so looked at psk reporter to see what the system was hearing, when I came back a station had replied twice but inbetween the 2 replys I had not answered. I will take a screenshot it if happens again. Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X: automatic processing of received messagesenhancements
I have had several qso's this evening using 5056 both calling cq and answering cq calls and the double clicking the sent text for a reply worked fine as did the log input but all calls were standard calls. The 1 thing I noticed was I started to call cq but got distracted a station replied and I never noticed, while tx was still enabled it did not send a 2nd cq it waited for me to reply so it missed a minute, normally it would continue to call cq, I noticed after the station called me twice and the qso went ahead as normal. Richard m0clz -Original Message- From: Bill Somerville Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2015 7:26 PM To: WSJT software development Subject: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X: automatic processing of received messagesenhancements Hi All, I have just committed the second phase of my changes related to compound callsigns to the development branch. Here is the commit message: r5055 | bsomervi | 2015-03-14 19:13:18 + (Sat, 14 Mar 2015) | 21 lines Improved automatic message handling More consistent and accurate processing of compund callsigns including recognizing the user's call in both base and fully qualified form, extracting reports from special type one and type two compound call messages. Ensure that "CQ DX" message prefixes are recognized and processd correctly. The cycle of double clicking through a QSO has been enhanced to recognoize the standard messages correctly and use the correct next message. The automatic transmission button "Enable Tx" now does what it says and does not double as a stop transmit button. This allows the current transmission to complete even if the automatic transmission feature is disabled. In line with this the "stop sending after a 73 message is sent" feature turns off the automatic transmission enable at the start of the sending of a 73 message and also the next message is now set up as the CQ message automatically in this scenario. A 73 message is now either a standard message containing the word "73" or any free text message containing "73" (not necessarily as a distinct word"). This change is a fairly radical reworking of the way incoming messages are parsed and the actions taken when messages are double clicked in the activity windows. It should handle QSOs by and with compound callsign holders far better than previously and has other benefits for all QSO types. I strongly recommend that testers experiment with using double clicks in the activity to progress their QSOs and report back any incorrect behaviour of the application. With these changes I find that having the settings "Double-click on call sets Tx enable" and "Disable Tx after sending 73" both checked makes the QSO process extremely smooth using just double-clicks on calls and responses, only having to revert to specific clicks and typing when I want to send a free text message or if my QSO partner sends an out of sequence message. If you are testing these changes; please double check that, when you come to log the QSO, the callsign, the report sent and received have been correctly transferred to the "Log QSO" pop up dialog. 73 Bill G4WJS. -- Dive into the World of Parallel Programming The Go Parallel Website, sponsored by Intel and developed in partnership with Slashdot Media, is your hub for all things parallel software development, from weekly thought leadership blogs to news, videos, case studies, tutorials and more. If your transceiver dial frequency set to 10.138000 MHz, USB mode, WSPR activity should be found between 2100 Hz and 2300 Hz on the WSJT-X waterfall. See the attached screen shot, made with my setup. WSPR signals are about 1/3 the width of JT9 signals, and they last for almost two full minutes. They are found under the orange-colored bar, which (on the 30 m band) is the "forbidden" region where WSJT-X refuses to transmit. If you find WSJT stations well outside the range 2100-2300 Hz, I can only conclude that your dial calibration is off by much more than 6 Hz. Re: [wsjt-devel] Possible Detection/Fix for KV Decoder Errors w/Windows OS
I have run most revisions since r6373 and at the moment am running r4848 and never had a crash while decoding yet. I have windows 7 with all updates installed. It is a six core amd unit with 8GB ram. WSJTX is set for decode deepest and the waterfall to bins/pixels 3 and the default jt65 2500 jt9 Using split mode on my ic-7000 I can operate anywhere displayed on the waterfall with no issues. The system is left on most of the time, with random downtimes to allow the missus to run her version or to see if there are any issues with the latest builds. Your 1st update is for explorer which I don't use anyway (I use firefox and chrome) though as explorer is integral to windows I would think I have the update. The 2nd update seems to be causing issues for some and nothing for others regardless of if they use wsjtx or any ham related software. I'm wondering if the issues are hardware/software rather than just software ?, not saying that there is a problem with your hardware but there are so many pc configurations it could be something totally random causing these issues. Regards Richard m0clz -Original Message- From: Paul DU2/WA8UGN Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2014 6:16 AM To: wsjt-devel@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [wsjt-devel] Possible Detection/Fix for KV Decoder Errors w/Windows OS After extensive testing, and with the aid of Julian, VK4CMV, who confirmed the existence of the exact same errors occurring with his WSJT-X operations, I come to the conclusion that changes to Microsoft Windows via periodic Windows updates, may be a major player in error activity. Testing was done on 3 different versions of WSJT-X (r3673, r4400, & r4633) in total isolation from the world, save "on-air" signal input. Almost every permutation of disabling software, option settings, etc. were employed in a very large number of tests. Each test was performed after a complete scrubbing of my laptop's hard drive, memory, and drivers. No positive effects were observed during the tests. I finally uninstalled every Windows update placed into service in Dec 2014, and re-tested. Results were most encouraging, with long runs of each WSJT-X version before a hiccup. Hiccups were cured by restarting WSJT-X (not the optimum resolution, but much better than others found to date). Final confirmation of WSJT-X - Windows interaction having some relationship to the errors observed came when each Windows update was individually re- installed. No change to the much improved operation of WSJT-X versions was observed until two different updates were installed. Each caused a slow- down of decoding, increased errors, and frequent Decode lock-ups. The "offending" Windows Updates are: KB3025390 - major "offender" KB2952664 - minor "offender" With these two Windows updates uninstalled, and everything but the kitchen sink attached to the laptop and every bit of software normally used in weak signal operations here running, the results of testing were impressive. Fast decoding (I use "Deepest" decoding), and a noteworthy improvement in mean time between errors. Best, only one decoder lock-up over 6+ hours of testing. If a KV error occurs, with or without the pop-up error window, normal operation continues. The pop-up error window can be closed when it appears - no observable deterioration in normal operations occur when that pop-up appears, nor when it is manually closed. Any thoughts about this line of testing and its results? Best 73, Paul DU2/WA8UGN -- Dive into the World of Parallel Programming! This seems long winded is there an easier way ? I know I could set up a different program for the wife but if the others were suitable I would be using one of them. Any help would be appreciated. [wsjt-devel] jstdk version 2
I had problems the last time I tried as it wouldn't execute on my 64 bit windows, and ended up installing to a 32 bit windows in a vm box then copying everything over but I had issues still. The latest one installs and works great and everything builds fine. I have built everything with no issues at all . A big thank you to everyone who has put in their time doing this. Hopefully I can learn a bit as well. Richard m0clz-- Download BIRT iHub F-Type - The Free Enterprise-Grade BIRT Server from Actuate! [wsjt-devel] Fw: JTSDK-2.0.0-B1-Win32 on a 64 bit machine ?
I downloaded this earlier and it wouldn’t work on my 64 bit windows 7. To get the files I had to install it into a 32bit windows in a vm window then rar the files and install to my 64 bit machine that way. I have programs that don’t run on 64 bit win7 hence the reason I have a vm for 32bit stuff but never had something refuse to install before ? Also the qtenv-build.bat still has SET WSJTXPKG=wsjtx-1.4.0-rc1-win32.exe Instead of SET WSJTXPKG=wsjtx-1.5.0-devel-win32.exe Which breaks the build unless this is intentional to stop distribution ? I don’t use it myself but like to test as much as possible. the environment seems to be broken for wsjtxrc as well, still works fine in jtsdk version 1. Hi Bill I don't know why my compiles are not working but that works great with or without the dtr so I have left it off. I don't know why dtr was ticked, I think it didn't work without dtr in mixw which used to be my main data program. Will have to see what i'm doing wrong with the compiling, should read more before I play. Will see if I can do 1.4 instead of 1.5 as it works.
