Re: [wsjt-devel] Automatization QSO

Hi all

Already been done by sv5dkl his station has worked in excess of 13,500
stations since last July he has posted a howto on youtube.
I cannot see the point in a robot station or understand how people cannot
click for themselves and feel the need for autoseq on which makes the whole
operation only 2 clicks away from a robot station anyway.
I have completely stopped playing with FT8 and now pick off the few jt65/jt9
stations that are about.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Bug Report: Version 1.9.1

2018-06-07 Thread Richard Stanley via wsjt-devel

You seem intent on proving there is something wrong with vista or wsjt-x.
Do you use any other digital mode programs for say psk31 or SSTV ?.
I would maybe suggest using one of those and see if they lock up when you tune.

I fail to see why you are looking at your operating system or the software for
the issue when the majority who have already suffered the same issue have
accepted that it is stray RF to blame, but you are totally unwilling to even
test.

Your windows is locking because the drivers are old and your OS does most
likely does not like the USB to get interrupted if you stop the initial
disconnect caused by the stray RF then your PC will not lock up.

You have 2 options upgrade to a new OS or spend $5 on a decent USB cable.

I will not bother you again as you do not read anything that does not fit
your belief that there is an issue with software that thousands of people are
using currently using and most have cured the issue by stopping the RFI.

outside of the program.

Had to reboot to get it back to normal operation.

post to a bug database as appropriate.

The OS I'm using is Vista-64 - it's the current computer I use in the shack -
so maybe this could be part of the issue I'm seeing.

I have a Yaesu FT-450D and am using a RigBlaster with it - some of the posted
configs don't exactly match what I'm seeing to make things work (made a contact
with Argentina last night) - and I also am using and LDG tuner with a vertical.

I'm able to repeat this bug as well -

After operating and changing bands; I will use my tuner; and the program will
either hang or will pop up a window saying the rig has become unresponsive. I
can click 'retry' sometimes and it'll be ok - but a consistent issue that will
happen is it will either become completely unresponsive - with TX stuck; or I
will get an error message saying hamlib I/O has suffered an error, and TX is
stuck.

When the issue happens, TX is always stuck.

I stop the program, but I can still see it running with Task Manager; and I
can't kill it. I have to reboot the computer (Vista-64) to reset things; of
course I have to power the Rig off.

I am not sure right now how to kill a process that is using Hamlib I/O - I
haven't found a specific process thread for that other than the WSJT-X program;
which I can't kill. Of course I have full admin rights on my shack computer.

This is probably a known issue; and if there is a bug database I can post or
add to that with this info.

  Thanks!

Re: [wsjt-devel] DXpedition Mode on 40 Meters?

2018-03-29 Thread Richard Stanley via wsjt-devel

I do not understand why the dxp mode cannot be used on the standard FT8
freqs, ft8 users do not want the junk on their freqs but are quite happy to
walk all over everyone else is that the modern day version of the ham spirit
:(.

I keep reading that band blocks cannot be put in but that is a lie as wspr
is protected from other modes in wsjt-x from transmitting on a wspr freq.

I cannot believe people are saying this was unforeseen as I said what would
happen last year.

The mode is a brilliant idea but uncontrolled operations are causing a
massive bad feeling.

The team quite often make betas that can only be used by certain callsigns
and I believe all versions should have hound capability but the fox mode
should be dished out as only working for certain callsigns and only if there
has been an application to the dev team.

I am fully aware that this can be got around as I do it myself every time
Joe forces this with certain versions but the average user will not do it
and at least the team can wash their hands of it if someone has played with
the code and causes havoc and bad feeling.

I fully expect this to be ignored as were my warnings last year but at least
I have suggested an alternative to minimise the damage this new feature is
doing to the reputation of the software in general. I do believe the
popularity of FT8 has made the users arrogant and it will become now like
every weekend on ssb a mess with contests ruining the bands but instead
everybody believing they are a valid dxp station and deserve to be able to
trash a section of the band and damn the existing users as they are not
important anyway.

Hmmm. For many years, every time I look around 7040 I hear PSK31, so I
thought that was the 40M watering hole. And I'll bet the guys on the
expedition did too. Remember, it is the DXpedition that chooses
operating frequencies, NOT the stations that want to work them. If you
have a complaint, email to the DXpedition pilot would be the place to
start. And while you're at it, be prepared to suggest where they should
set up shop that is NOT the standard FT8 frequency, and that won't make
someone else unhappy.

That sounds like your audio stream froze.
Possible causes:

#1 RF in the shack.
#2 USB going to sleep -- this should only happen if PC is left unattended.

This is happening while your operating, right? In that case RF is the likely
culprit. Does happen when you transmit?
Lots of potential sources can cause this, USB cables, ethernet cables, computer
cards. We had one guy whose rotor caused it even though it wasn't plugged into
anything but power.

Hi all

I do not think that pleading for “good operating sensibilities and
consideration for others” will do much good.

I did query ages ago when this mode was 1st being mentioned that if it was a
good idea but got shouted down.

All I see nowadays is people answering a cq then deciding to call cq themselves
elsewhere but having not bothering to read the manual 1st fail to take their tx
with them and proceed to call cq on the previous still occupied frequency. I
have lost count of the people I have emailed to explain that just clicking on
the waterfall does not move the tx and that they need to hold the CTRL button
when clicking if they want the tx to move with the click of the mouse.

I understand the developers are assuming that most operators will read the
manual and have some common sense and while I admire their optimism the reality
is not matching their expectations

After general release everybody will think they are special and I can see havoc
with multiple stations using the new mode think they are the only ones entitled
to do it.

Have to agree with Jim, N2ADV. An expedition should NOT be using a
mode-in-development. It is a near-guarantee of confusion.

That said, DXpedition mode is something of a Pandora’s Box. Once opened, the
developers have no control over who uses it or when. It would be more than a
little naive to assert that all users will a) read the instructions, and b)
follow them.

For good or ill, it’s out there. All we can do is plead for good operating

prospect for contesters and special event stations to willingly forgo its use.

Hi all,

You have probably heard something about recent efforts to develop a
special "FT8 DXpedition Mode" in WSJT-X. This message aims to bring you
up-to-date on our progress, and generally to make our plans more widely
known.

The basic goal of *FT8 DXpedition Mode* is to enable DXpeditions to make
FT8 QSOs at the highest possible rates. We have been working together
with members of the Baker Island (KH1/KH7Z) group. Their planned
expedition will take place in June-July 2018. Like most major
DXpeditions, this one will almost certainly make a majority of its QSOs
using SSB and CW. However, the group is well aware of the rapid rise of
FT8 popularity, and they plan to use FT8 as well.

Making FT8 QSOs with KH1/KH7Z will require the DXpedition and everyone
trying to work them to use a new, yet-to-be-released version of WSJT-X.

We have tested the new program features on the air several times, and
found them to work well. Another test run will probably be scheduled in
a month or so. There will be plenty of advance publicity inviting
others to upgrade to a "Release Candidate" called WSJT-X v1.9.0-rc1, and
to join in trying to work one or more specific "pseudo-DXpedition"
stations at a certain time and frequency. In this way, we hope to
continue shaking bugs out of the program and generally to improve its
usability -- both for the DX operator and those seeking to work him.

FT8 DXpedition mode includes a number of new and innovative features.
For further details on what's in store, I draw your attention to a draft
of the "FT8 DXpedition Mode User Guide" posted here:
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/FT8_DXpedition_Mode.pdf

With best wishes,

C:/JTSDK/src/wsjtx to say C:/JTSDK/src/wsjtx1
Then try
build-wsjtx rinstall
and it will build just fine and update after that.

Hi Paul,

I have checked the SF svn servers a few times over the last hour or so and
they seem to be up and stable. You could try running the `svn cleanup`
command on your checked out working area:

$ svn help cleanup
cleanup: Recursively clean up the working copy, removing locks, resuming
unfinished operations, etc.
usage: cleanup [WCPATH...]

Valid options:
--diff3-cmd ARG : use ARG as merge command

Global options:
--username ARG : specify a username ARG
--password ARG : specify a password ARG
--no-auth-cache : do not cache authentication tokens
--non-interactive: do no interactive prompting (default is to
prompt
only if standard input is a terminal device)
--force-interactive : do interactive prompting even if standard
input
 is not a terminal device
--trust-server-cert : accept SSL server certificates from unknown
 certificate authorities without prompting (but
only
 with '--non-interactive')
--config-dir ARG : read user configuration files from directory
ARG
--config-option ARG : set user configuration option in the format:
 FILE:SECTION:OPTION=[VALUE]
 For example:
 servers:global:http-library=serf

if that doesn't help; then try the option in the JTSDK to scrap and
re-checkout your workspace.

I have the same issue here but only for 1.7
If I do

It updates (to 8084) just fine but
build-wsjtx rinstall
or
build-wsjtx -b dev -n wsjtx -c release -t install

both give the same sourceforge update error ?

Not over fussed myself as not keen to test the new everyone working split by

Hi

Simple question - or can someone point me at related docs.

Downloaded the JTSDK (For Windows), followed details on and managed to compile
wsjtx without error.

I used the build-wsjtx ‘rinstall' command to build a release version - is there
a command that will build wsjtx and all required ‘add ons’ libs etc to allow me
to upgrade an existing install.

Thanks

Thanks for that, Bill; I knew the wsjtx branch was no longer suitable

Hi Steve,

If you are using raw subversion commands then:

  $ svn switch ^/branches/wsjtx-1.8

will swap your workspace to the v1.8 branch and:

  $ svn sw ^/branches/wsjtx

to get back to the development trunk (branch).

For JTSDK users I believe this is automated and you can switch branches with
a canned command.

I was thinking since you could gain a lot of useful propagation information
from JT-Mode QSOs, what if we included some info to help further define the
parameters involved in the contact. You can't fit much in 3 bits, but what
about some sort of "Station Type Identifier" like this:

3 Bits APP

Antenna Type
0PP = Omnidirectional (Vert, Dipole)
1PP = Directional (Yagi, Log)

Station Power (as entered or possibly queried by CAT)
A00 = 0-10 Watts
A01 = 11-25 Watts
A10 = 26-50 Watts
A11 = 50+ Watts

May I suggest to all the group users that if we see folks requesting install
packages, we offer to help them set up the JTSDK environment on their
machines, in the "teach a man to fish" spirit. They can then easily build
the releases by typing the few magic phrases "build-hamlib3" and
"build-wsjtx package". If they aren't willing, then they can wait for the
official release. Those that are really motivated to get on FT8 will have to
put out the relatively minimal effort.

I had a few minor issues because I didn't follow directions, then started
the install again, and it was very easy. I am happy to help if anyone needs
it. I know some of you are Linux and Mac expert users, so I think we will
have it covered.

Hello All,

Appropriate Use
==

JTSDK exists to help users build and "test" Joe's software, not distribute
it. We all want these fantastic applications, but, we "users" must respect
the developers requests.

I've received several reports of WSJTX packages built with JTSDK being
distributed by end-users. If this continues, I'll have no choice but to
remove the package build feature from JTSDK. Joe has, on many occasions,
requested that package installers not be re-distributed by anyone other than
the development team. Please respect their wishes!

For "Non-Developers" / "Testers" - (Setup && Usage)
===
For those of you "testing" Joe's software, a few things to note:

* DO NOT distribute the packages you build for yourself! < nuff said >
* Make sure, "before posting bugs", you are running the latest SVN revision
* Setup JTSDK-QT as follows:

- Open JTSDK-QT [1]
- Set the following options; can be on one line separated by a " ; "
semicolon,
or you can set them individually. If individually, you do not need the " ; "
:

enable-separate ; disable-quiet ; disable-skipsvn ; enable-autosvn ;
enable-clean ; enable-rcfg ; enable-qt55

You can, if desired, enable-autorun, which will launch the newly built
version for you.

* Check your options are set properly with [2]: list-options
* Close, then reopen JTSDK-QT
* Build Hamlib3:  build-hamlib3
* Build the Release Install target (unless otherwise directed by a developer
for troubleshooting):

build-wsjtx rinstall

You can build WSJT-X as often as you like, and should do; especially when
new features have been added, or the development team is requesting broader
use testing.

* Build an installable package ( DO NO DISTRIBUTE THESE < nuff said again >
):
* For most users, this is "not needed, nor desired for testing"

build-wsjtx package

Hi

I missed 6020 because I was out but have been running 6021 alongside jt65hf
for most of the evening on 40 mtrs.
Where as before jt65hf-hb9hqx would consistently outperform wsjt-x 95% of
the time in the last 3 to 4 hours wsjt-x has picked up everything received
by jt65hf plus others missed by the jt65hf variant with not 1 garbled decode
which cannot be said for the jt65hf variant which has had quite a few bad
decodes.

I do not have much interference here tonight I will post again if results
change under excessive interference conditions which is the norm for my
location.

Not scientific but my experience operating from here.

Subject: Re: [wsjt-devel] jt65 signal subtraction

Hi all,

WSJT-X v1.6.1 now (SVN revision 6020) includes a first cut at using
Steve's 2-pass decoding scheme for JT65.

As you will have seen in previous posts by Steve and me -- based on use
of a stand-alone, single-purpose program -- the 2-pass scheme produces
significantly more decodes from crowded band segments. In both passes
it uses the "sfrsd" algorithm rather than the patented, closed-source
algorithm of kvasd.

Here's an update on the table I shared here on 10/2/2015, summarizing
JT65 decoding performance of JT65-HF-HB9HQX-Edition and several versions
of WSJT-X. All programs analyzed exactly the same data, recorded (by
WSJT-X r5912) on 20 meters.

  Correct False
Program Decodes Decodes Decoder

JT65-HF2329 24BM + kvasd
WSJT-X r5912 2249 0BM + kvasd
WSJT-X r5955 2114 0BM + sfrsd
WSJT-X r5955 1816 0BM only
WSJT-X r6020 2874 0BM + sfrsd (N=1000) + 2-pass

If you've been following SVN updates and relevant posts made here you
will know that I've also been experimenting with "experience-based"
decoding of JT65 signals. So far this has been done in SVN trunk, the
WSJT branch. I will soon start work on merging this code into WSJT-X.
This will require making some distinction between HF-style
"multi-decoding" of all JT65 signals found in the received passband, and
VHF/UHF/Microwave/EME-style decoding where one (or a small number)
signals are expected to be present in the passband.

The new JT65 decoder has some user-adjustable parameters (see attached
screen shot of the "Settings | Advanced" tab). At present the only one
activated is a spinner that sets the number of random erasure patterns
tried in the sfrsd algorithm. The default setting is "6", which sets
variable ntrials = 1000. Other settings as follows:

Setting ntrials
--
0   0  ==> BM only
1 3
2 10
3 30
4 100
5 300
6 1,000
7 3,000
8 10,000
9 30,000
10100,000
11300,000
12 1,000,000

Bigger numbers generally mean slower decodes.

As always, feedback is encouraged!

Re: [wsjt-devel] Fwd: Fortran runtime error

2015-10-18 Thread Richard Stanley
The fortran error is only with jt65, select just jt9 and no fortran error,
it's been like that for the last week or so.
I assumed it was just because the sfrsd2 was being tested and everything was
being optimised for that.

Hello,

I tried jtsdk - it is great! Thanks, Greg!

The latest development 1.6.1 release 5975 works till decode. Then there is
error as in the screenshot. After ok, there is never ending FFT
optimization. I hope it helps.

1.6.0 works great. I refreshed the install with jtsdk.

If you have any task at hand, like testing something, please let me know.

I have no idea what a zlp interface is.

If the other program -- I guess that's jt65-hf-hb9hqx? -- can't read a
wav file, it's impossible to ensure that the decoders in two programs
are in fact operating on the same data.

WSJT-X does not want "anything better" than 48000 Hz sample rate. What
it particularly does NOT want is data that have been sampled (or
possibly resampled) at some other rate such as 44100 Hz and then
resampled (maybe again? ) to 48000 Hz.

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X JT65A Decode performance

2015-09-16 Thread Richard Stanley
I will get the zlp interface tomorrow from the shed.
The codec driver for the 7100 doesn’t do any better than 48000 I will see if
the zlp does any better.
I always start wsjt-x 1st as it is my main program.
I only started testing because someone else mentioned this issue and I could
not see how a program that I considered a poor hack could not just compete with
wsjt-x but outperform it.
I will post back here tomorrow, it’s pouring with rain and I don’t want to go
out to the shed.

jt65-hf-hb9hqx from that and wsjt-x from the built in interface, this way it
will be different soundcard interfaces with the same radio.
I can run on 2 different computers but as the jt65 variant decodes at 42.3
it is finished before wsjt-x even starts to decode.
Do you want me to leave the zlp interface at it's default settings or set as
the built in unit at 48000Hz ?.I believe the JT65-HF applications use an
11.025kHz sample rate so setting the interface for that to 44.1kHz should be
optimal as a divide by exactly four down conversion is trivial.

Thanks for trying this, I think it may be enlightening. Also you could try the
different options on the rig CODEC driver in the advanced properties if it has
them, something like:

all combinations the exclusive mode settings.

I would also be interested if starting WSJT-X before JT65-HB9HQX has any
apparent effect.

Hi Joe,
My experience is that most claims that "program X" decodes JT65 better
than WSJT (or WSJT-X) are the result of using wrong soundcard sample
rates. I seem to remember that JT65-HF doesn't read (or write) *.wav
files, so it's very hard to do a real comparison of the decoders. I
suspect there may be a sample-rate issue, but that's only a guess.
That's my suspicion too and knowing that the Windows sample rate
conversion capability has been pretty poor in older versions makes me
think that this may be related to that. I have no idea how each version
of Windows deals with two applications asking for different sample rate
streams from the same input device. I would hope that each device is run
at the specified default sample rate and all streams are derived from
that converting rate if necessary. OTOH there are usually options in the
driver advanced properties about exclusive access that imply there can
be a first come first served (at the requested sample rate) basis. So
the order of starting applications might be a factor.

This would mean that verifying this would require two separate systems
taking analog audio from a single receiver or perhaps a system with two
sound cards.

2015-09-16 Thread Richard Stanley
Hi Joe

That noise is my working environment and why I use digital modes, ssb is a
virtual impossibility at my location unless I go /p.
Those files were made by wsjt-x (5892)
Yes 48 kHz sample rate
I don't know if the jt65-hdf (hb9 variant) reads wav files I only use it to
monitor to see what wsjt-x misses for me it is the difference between making
a contact or not.

Hi Richard and all,

I don't really understand what's being discussed here. Bill sent me
copies of files with these names:

150916_1430.wav
150916_1433.wav
150916_1529.wav
150916_1530.wav
150916_1531.wav

I don't know who made the files, or with what program.

The files are, frankly, a mess: birdies all over the place, a few JT65
signals, and a few other signals. It's impossible to make any
meaningful decoding comparisons without knowing more details.

Does JT65-HF (or the HB9??-edition, or whatever) read or write *.wav
files? Not as far as I recall, but maybe I'm wrong.

What do you think was supposed to be decoded from each of the above
files? Can we see the decoded results?

If the recordings were made with WSJT-X, was the computer set up
properly with 48 kHz sample rate?

That version is very old current version is 10.0 5755

do not need anybodys ppa if you compile from the info i gave you.

I have been reading what you write on the reflector.

jt9 all modes

Re: [wsjt-devel] wsjtx decodes

2015-08-27 Thread Richard Stanley
Hi Bill

My soundcard was on 44 changed it to 48 and it now decodes everything that the
jt65-fh variants decode.
I didn’t think jt65-hf in either variant would decode stuff that wsjt-x
couldn’t and it was a wrong setting here.
I will post the same info where I saw the original comment that got me to do
the limited test.
It was on 48 but recently upgraded to win10 and it must have reset it to 44 ?

Ensure that you have set the default soundcard sample rate to at least 48kHz,
this is required for WSJT-X to perform correctly. AFAIK the JT65-HF programs
use an 11.25kHz sample stream which will be optimally derived from a soundcard
set at 44.1kHz. 44.1kHz sample rate is usually the default and is considered
the consumer maximum sample rate.

You should be aware that the jt65-hf variants all use the same decoding engine
which was released with an old variant of WSJT and we are quite confident that
the decoding ability of the current WSJT-X is considerably improved in both
speed and resolution over that rather ancient version.

Good afternoon,

I am attempting to update the WSJT documentation to include my recent changes
to ISCAT and am running into issues...

As per the developers guide I did a windows install and then an update for
developers using

svn co https://us...@svn.code.sf.net/p/wsjt/wsjt/branches/doc replacing user
with my ID. That all seemed to work well and I am checked outat revision
5649. I made my changes and then attempted to compile. As per the developers
guide at the C:JTSDK-DOC> prompt in the JTSDK-DOC environment I typed “build
wsjt” and hit enter. Iget the following: 'build' is not recognized as an
internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Hi All,

I have install the WSJT-Suite v1.0.30 and found the same problem in the WSJT-X
v1.6.0 devel r5605 as in earlier versions, namely:
If the “Enable button” is enabled (also “Enable button” in red color) and the
TRX is going in TX and I will abort the TX by click on the “Enable TX” (now
“Enable TX” is grey color) my TRX stay in transmit, press the ESC button on the
keyboard haven’t effect. The only way to abort the transmission is switching
the “Tx even” in enabled or in disabled.

Re: [wsjt-devel] How often new version WSJT-X ?

2015-06-08 Thread richard stanley
Hi Guy

I did answer earlier but for some reason it has not appeared.
You are building 1.6.1 this is no longer valid.
You need to checkout the latest with

checkout-wsjtx
This only needs to be done once.

then build is nearly the same as normal but use this line instead.

build-wsjtx rinstall

I believe at the moment you are using build-wsjtxexp rinstall which is no
longer updated or current.
Plenty of new stuff if you don't use the "exp" which I believe stood for
experimental ?

Guy
If the -r-value increments it's a new version. compiling from updated
SVN source, uses the current source available from the SVN repository
where each edit done on any part of the software increments the -r
value. you can see the explanation of the changes by looking at the
commit messages.

The band hopping schedule is not something that can be changed without
changing it for everyone, the intent is to congregate all band hoppers
on the same bands at the same time to maximize the number of spots
posted to wsprnet.org.

OTOH the latest version of WSJT-X allows you to include any band with a
defined WSPR working frequency in you band hopping schedule and they
will be randomly picked whenever a coordinated schedule band slot is not
available. So for example if you tick the 6m and 4m check boxes in the
Day schedule and un-tick the bands that will not have useful daytime DX
propagation like 160m, 80m, 60m, 40m and 30m then 4m and 6m may be
scheduled in the now vacant HF slots slots. They will compete with
random chance along with 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m and 10m for the vacant slot.

I hope that makes some sense?

Hi All,

to all testers of the development WSPR code, I have enhanced the band
hopping scheduling to allow any band to be included in the schedule.
Bands not in the 10 coordinated bands will only be scheduled when the
band for the current coordinated slot is not available, in this case all
the checked bands will be considered and a random one from that set will
be used.

Because of these changes I have invalidated any prior schedule tables so
you will have to set up the table again, sorry about that but as this is
unreleased code it is much easier to invalidate than provide an upgrade

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSPR issue after JT split operation

2015-06-02 Thread richard stanley

I will be honest i'm not at all literate in FFT effects so may have
completely the wrong end of the stick here..
I use split because I can tx a full 5 watts in the centre of the waterfall
but as I go below 1000 or above 2000 my power drops off.
Now I use split the tx moves so i'm back to 5 watts, if I can see them I can
tx the maximum rf at them without having to play with my vfo.
I maybe wrong but I assumed (always a bad idea) that this was the purpose of
the split mode in wsjtx, I turn split off for wspr if I use it.

Isn't part of the reason for split to make for a cleaner signal? Seems to
me that would still hold true no matter where it converts to analog,
wouldn't it? Somebody is doing an inverse FFT which I assume is the problem
area.
I never quite understood the FFT reason for putting the signal in the
1500-2000 offset thought I am fairly literate in FFT effects.

covered of failing to Tx without hopping enabled, and continuous Tx when
enabled, I also found I was Txing "out of band" ie 500 Hz too low. So it
seems to continue with the use of Slice B for transmit and set this 500 Hz
lower than standard dial but not adjust the 1500 Hz audio by the same
amount. Probably WSPR does not need this split operation and something needs
to ensure that Slice B is fixed on nominal dial in WSPR mode. Split needs
to be retained because of the audio settings as typically we have DAX Rx 1
and DAX Tx 2 in settings for split operation on JT modes, else would need
separate audio setups for the two modes.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Wanted: Feedback on WSPR in WSJT-X

2015-06-02 Thread richard stanley
Hi Joe

You could release as v.1.6.0-devel r as you do now with the revision
number and point your site to a repository.

You could even do nightly builds, I have a linux sat box and the openpli
boys do nightly builds and stable builds with a caveat that nightly builds
may have unwanted features (crashes :) ), there are a few opensource people
that do this. As a rule the coders code and a non coder would sort out the
posting of the nightly builds etc.

On the psk reporter statistics there used to be a few users of the latest
builds nowadays the numbers have gone up WSJT-X v1.6.1-devel r5418 has 56
users so the interest is there in the new builds, it's getting the users to
feedback the bugs. Many users shy from building themselves even though the
JTSDK makes it easy for even non coders like myself to build the latest
releases.

Subject: [wsjt-devel] Wanted: Feedback on WSPR in WSJT-X

Hi all,

The feature list of WSJT-X Version 1.6 continues to grow. A number of
good things are still to come: for example,

  - EME Doppler calculations using the JPL Planetary Ephemeris
  - Improved message averaging for JT4
  - Correlation decoding and message averaging for JT65
  - WSPR-15 mode
  - EME Echo mode
  - User Guide sections on WSPR and VHF+ features

... as well as some much needed behind-the scenes changes such as
refactoring of mainwindow.cpp into smaller pieces, etc., etc.

Notwithstanding the sizable list of "To Do" items, I think it would be
useful to get some more feedback from users on the way WSPR is
implemented in WSJT-X. I'd like to post a message on the WSPRnet.org
site saying that WSPR mode is now available in a beta release of WSJT-X,
and that we'd like to get some feedback from experienced WSPR users.

Does anyone see a significant downside to doing this ?

If we do the above, what should a released beta be called? It's not
really a GA release candidate yet, so maybe v1.6.0-rc1 is not the right
thing to call it?

Is there a good reason to wait until after a v1.5.0 GA release ?

Hi all,

Just a brief note to let you know that WSPR mode is now alive and well
in WSJT-X v1.6.1.

If you have been building recent experimental versions of WSJT-X for
yourself, please give WSPR mode a try. It does not (yet) support "band
hopping" or a few other advanced features of standard WSPR or WSPR-X,
but for normal single-band use it is essentially complete. Some
feedback on its use will be useful and appreciated.

Hi Claude

I'm not a programmer i'm just an impatient user who compiles so he doesn't
have to wait.

I check https://sourceforge.net/p/wsjt/wsjt/HEAD/tree/
If it says
/branches/wsjtx_exp
then I know that 1.6.1 has been updated so I compile and hope it runs (99%
run so far)

If it says
/branches/wsjtx
Then I know that 1.6 has been updated and unless there is a request here for
people to test it then I ignore it and wait for the next 1.6.1 updates.

As I say i'm not a programmer I can test new revisions as they come out and
I find the method above the easiest way of keeping track of what is
happening.
I have picked up little bits as I go along but I am a very long way from
being able to give any useful help on the programming side of things.
I know that when Joe 1st started to do the experimental I did this to check
it out but i'm assuming you know these lines.

I'm routinely svn'ing and building wjstx 1.6.0 series (and testing it every
day); I have also
retrieved the trunk and all branches.

I don't see an obvious way to retrieve the 1.6.1 wsjtx.
What am I missing?

I have been playing with it on 20 mtrs and 40 mtrs.
I noticed with tx pct 20% it appeared to tx every other minute but at 10% it

I have not tried 20% in recent versions so it may be more random now.

A nice mode with just 0.5 watts I was seen in vk/zl/vp8 on 40mtrs 2 nights

Windows is TERRIBLE at removing temp files from both the TEMP location in
the Windows folder and in the user's appdata folder. I regularly remove lots
of dross from both locations and I do not even program.

Run the disk clean utility and get rid of even more unnecessary rubbish.

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X: automatic processing of received messages enhancements

2015-03-15 Thread richard stanley

The double clicking on the incoming text is good for people like my wife who
is nervous of making a mistake and though she never does make a mistake is
always worried about making one.
Using this method she knows everything is in the right order.

I understand things go wrong but she is always nervous of doing things wrong
so for her this is invaluable.
I wouldn't like it fully automated, I tried sim31 just after xmas and it
does everything itself which for me was pointless but each to their own.

Hi Bill

I don't remember but I normally just click the cq tx 6 button then enable

It called cq once but I had started at about 10 seconds so didn't expect a

answered.
I will take a screenshot it if happens again.

I have had several qso's this evening using 5056 both calling cq and
answering cq calls and the double clicking the sent text for a reply worked
fine as did the log input but all calls were standard calls.

The 1 thing I noticed was I started to call cq but got distracted a station
replied and I never noticed, while tx was still enabled it did not send a
2nd cq it waited for me to reply so it missed a minute, normally it would
continue to call cq, I noticed after the station called me twice and the qso

Subject: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X: automatic processing of received
messagesenhancements

Hi All,

I have just committed the second phase of my changes related to compound
callsigns to the development branch. Here is the commit message:

r5055 | bsomervi | 2015-03-14 19:13:18 + (Sat, 14 Mar 2015) | 21 lines

Improved automatic message handling

More consistent and accurate processing of compund callsigns including
recognizing the user's call in both base and fully qualified form,
extracting reports from special type one and type two compound call
messages. Ensure that "CQ DX" message prefixes are recognized and
processd correctly.

The cycle of double clicking through a QSO has been enhanced to
recognoize the standard messages correctly and use the correct next
message. The automatic transmission button "Enable Tx" now does what
it says and does not double as a stop transmit button. This allows the
current transmission to complete even if the automatic transmission
feature is disabled. In line with this the "stop sending after a 73
message is sent" feature turns off the automatic transmission enable
at the start of the sending of a 73 message and also the next message
is now set up as the CQ message automatically in this scenario. A 73
message is now either a standard message containing the word "73" or
any free text message containing "73" (not necessarily as a distinct
word").

This change is a fairly radical reworking of the way incoming messages
are parsed and the actions taken when messages are double clicked in the
activity windows. It should handle QSOs by and with compound callsign
holders far better than previously and has other benefits for all QSO types.

I strongly recommend that testers experiment with using double clicks in
the activity to progress their QSOs and report back any incorrect
behaviour of the application.

With these changes I find that having the settings "Double-click on call
sets Tx enable" and "Disable Tx after sending 73" both checked makes the
QSO process extremely smooth using just double-clicks on calls and
responses, only having to revert to specific clicks and typing when I
want to send a free text message or if my QSO partner sends an out of
sequence message.

If you are testing these changes; please double check that, when you
come to log the QSO, the callsign, the report sent and received have
been correctly transferred to the "Log QSO" pop up dialog.

73

G4WJS.

Subject: [wsjt-devel] Band Activity Sort

Hi all,

I'm not sure if I'm the only one seeing this or what, but I no longer
see the reports coming in sorted by the selected mode as I had prior to
the last two versions I built 4994 (I believe) and this latest build, 5017.

Previously, if you had JT9 selected, all the JT9 decodes would appear
first, then the JT65 ones, and vice versa. Now I'm seeing them
interspersed.Bug? Change due to the new decoders and their speed ??

That said, I do appreciate all that y'all do.

Cheers,

Neil

Hi Bill

Great I had visions of stations wanting their own line in the stats and the
whole lot becoming a mess.
I understand why the version bit was added I just think that the other bit
might get abused by people once they work out how to do it

[wsjt-devel] psk reporter

2015-02-23 Thread richard stanley
Hi

Has the way wsjtx sends reports/version to the psk reporter website changed ?.
Normall it say for example
  WSJT-X r4978 ARMv7 1 DG0OPK
  WSJT-X r4978-dirty 1 KK1D
  WSJT-X r4982 2 W9MDB, M0CLZ
  WSJT-X r4982 ARMv7 1 DG0OPK
  WSJT-X r4986 ARMv7 1 DG0OPK

Now it seems to send much more information is
  WSJT-X v1.4.0-rc3 r4984 by K1JT 1 NO5J
  WSJT-X v1.5.0-devel by K1JT 1 KI7MT
  WSJT-X v1.5.0-devel r4986 by K1JT 9
  WSJT-X - 2e0nce v1.5.0-devel r4986 by K1JT 1 2E0NCE

As you can see my wife 2e0nce has her own line as I call using
wsjtx.exe --rig-name=2e0nce
As if she was another radio so she gets her own logbook.
I can see the statistics part of the psk reporter website getting filled up
with this as they keep the data for 7 days and I am always testing new releases
and she likes jt65 as she cannot get mike shy.
Also i’m sure that other people use it for different radios.

Just curious

If your transceiver dial frequency set to 10.138000 MHz, USB mode, WSPR
activity should be found between 2100 Hz and 2300 Hz on the WSJT-X
waterfall. See the attached screen shot, made with my setup.

WSPR signals are about 1/3 the width of JT9 signals, and they last for
almost two full minutes. They are found under the orange-colored bar,
which (on the 30 m band) is the "forbidden" region where WSJT-X refuses
to transmit.

If you find WSJT stations well outside the range 2100-2300 Hz, I can
only conclude that your dial calibration is off by much more than 6 Hz.
Or perhaps we are mis-communicating in some way that I do not understand?

In general, the best places for reporting such issues are the WSJT
developers email list, wsjt-devel@lists.sourceforge.net, or the
"wsjtgroup" email reflector, wsjtgr...@yahoogroups.com .

Most CAT-control issues are being handled by Bill, G4WJS. You don't
mention what radio you're talking about, but your .ini file suggests
it's an IC-7000. Some of the newer radios are not yet handled smoothly
by hamlib, and Bill is working on that. Usually he can fix problems
like yours very quickly, once identified. We (the developers) don't
spend much of our time in OS X, either; our Mac guru is John, G4KLA.

I am copying this brief response to the wsjt-devel list so that Bill and
John will be aware of the issue(s) you report.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Possible Detection/Fix for KV Decoder Errors w/Windows OS

2014-12-23 Thread richard stanley

I have run most revisions since r6373 and at the moment am running r4848 and
never
had a crash while decoding yet.

I have windows 7 with all updates installed. It is a six core amd unit with
8GB ram.

WSJTX is set for decode deepest and the waterfall to bins/pixels 3 and the
default
jt65 2500 jt9

Using split mode on my ic-7000 I can operate anywhere displayed on the
waterfall with no issues.

The system is left on most of the time, with random downtimes to allow the
missus to run her
version or to see if there are any issues with the latest builds.

Your 1st update is for explorer which I don't use anyway (I use firefox and
chrome) though as explorer
is integral to windows I would think I have the update.

The 2nd update seems to be causing issues for some and nothing for others
regardless of if they use
wsjtx or any ham related software.

I'm wondering if the issues are hardware/software rather than just software
?, not saying that there is
a problem with your hardware but there are so many pc configurations it
could be something totally
random causing these issues.

Subject: [wsjt-devel] Possible Detection/Fix for KV Decoder Errors w/Windows
OS

After extensive testing, and with the aid of Julian, VK4CMV, who confirmed
the existence of the exact same errors occurring with his WSJT-X
operations, I come to the conclusion that changes to Microsoft Windows via
periodic Windows updates, may be a major player in error activity.

Testing was done on 3 different versions of WSJT-X (r3673, r4400, & r4633)
in total isolation from the world, save "on-air" signal input. Almost
every permutation of disabling software, option settings, etc. were
employed in a very large number of tests. Each test was performed after a
complete scrubbing of my laptop's hard drive, memory, and drivers. No
positive effects were observed during the tests.

I finally uninstalled every Windows update placed into service in Dec 2014,
and re-tested. Results were most encouraging, with long runs of each
WSJT-X version before a hiccup. Hiccups were cured by restarting WSJT-X
(not the optimum resolution, but much better than others found to date).

Final confirmation of WSJT-X - Windows interaction having some relationship
to the errors observed came when each Windows update was individually re-
installed. No change to the much improved operation of WSJT-X versions was
observed until two different updates were installed. Each caused a slow-
down of decoding, increased errors, and frequent Decode lock-ups.

The "offending" Windows Updates are:

 KB3025390 - major "offender"
 KB2952664 - minor "offender"

With these two Windows updates uninstalled, and everything but the kitchen
sink attached to the laptop and every bit of software normally used in weak
signal operations here running, the results of testing were impressive.
Fast decoding (I use "Deepest" decoding), and a noteworthy improvement in
mean time between errors. Best, only one decoder lock-up over 6+ hours of
testing. If a KV error occurs, with or without the pop-up error window,
normal operation continues. The pop-up error window can be closed when it
appears - no observable deterioration in normal operations occur when that
pop-up appears, nor when it is manually closed.

Any thoughts about this line of testing and its results?

Best 73,

Paul DU2/WA8UGN

I assume you are using fairly recent version of the application since you are
asking on the development list. Since v1.4 you can start WSJT-X with a
'--rig-name=' argument where name can be almost anything. What that does
is starts with a unique set of settings and other writeable files including the
logging. Although it is intended for multiple instances running concurrently
with multiple rigs, it is also perfect for your situation.

You can continue to use the default instance and the XYL could start the
program like:

wsjtx --rig-name=xyl

and she will have her own personal settings and log files.

  Any help would be appreciated.

I have programs that don’t run on 64 bit win7 hence the reason I have a vm for

Also the qtenv-build.bat still has
SET WSJTXPKG=wsjtx-1.4.0-rc1-win32.exe
Instead of
SET WSJTXPKG=wsjtx-1.5.0-devel-win32.exe

Which breaks the build unless this is intentional to stop distribution ?
I don’t use it myself but like to test as much as possible.

the environment seems to be broken for wsjtxrc as well, still works fine in

Hi all,

The webpage:

Here is an installer for the latest v1.4.0-rc3:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4192709/wsjtx-1.4.0-rc3-win32-r4547.exe

this is a normal release version without the tracing. It should keep you
going until I can get the Hamlib changes published.

2014-10-20 Thread richard stanley
Hi Bill

No problem I thought I was doing something wrong.
Just tested and the program puts the radio into data mode as well which is
pretty neat not seen other programs that do that, normally I have to do it
by
hand.

Thanks again Bill

The 1.5 development branch has all the 1.4 branch changes in it.

The problem is almost certainly that I have not pushed all my recent
Hamlib changes to my public Hamlib fork repository yet. Sorry about
that, there are a lot of changes and I want to ensure that they are all
well tested and accepted by the Hamlib team before I make them public.

2014-10-20 Thread richard stanley
Hi Bill

I don't know why my compiles are not working but that works great with or
without the dtr so I have left it off.
I don't know why dtr was ticked, I think it didn't work without dtr in mixw
which used to be my main data program.
Will have to see what i'm doing wrong with the compiling, should read more
before I play.
Will see if I can do 1.4 instead of 1.5 as it works.
Just had a few test contacts one with split and 1 without and it works
great.

Thanks Bill

Here is a link to an installer for a test version that has tracing built in:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4192709/wsjtx-1.4.0-rc3-win32-r4543-CAT-trace.exe

install it over the official WSJT-X v1.4.0-rc2 Beta release (no need to
un-install) and run it until the error then quit the application.

It will create a file "%TEMP%\WSJT-X_trace.log", send that to me for
analysis so I can see what is happening.

2014-10-20 Thread richard stanley
Hi Bill

Thanks for the reply

Still no Joy I have
ci-v transceive off
ci-v address 80h
ci-v baud rate19200
data mode usb
on the radio and

com3, baud rate 19200, db 1, sb 1, handshake none, force control lines dtr
I have tried combinations of mode and split but they all give the same
error.

This works fine in r3673 and the only difference is I can't set the poll to
0

I also tried with a cable from a com port and removed the usb but no joy.

It's no biggy as I can use 3673 but would like to be able to play with the
newer versions if possible.

You need to make sure "CI-V Transceive Mode" is turned off on your rig.
Hamlib (and many other rig control programs) cannot cope with the
unsolicited CAT traffic that "CI-V Transceive Mode" generates.

We have branched the WSJT-X repository. The main line (v1.5 development)
is, rather confusingly, in ^/branches/wsjtx and the v1.4 release branch

[wsjt-devel] Cat control and the ic-7410

2014-10-20 Thread richard stanley
Hi

Has anybody got the new wsjt-x to talk to an ic-7410 ?.
Mine keeps refusing the connection, I have tried with the built in usb and a
separate cat lead and keep getting

Hamlib error: Command rejected by the rig while setting current VFO

Just tried it with r4549 still no joy.
I have tried with different combinations of mode and split with no joy.
Also my compilations come out as wsjtx-1.5.0-devel r4549 but posts are
talking about wsjtx-1.4.0-rc1 to wsjtx-1.4.0-rc3
so i'm not to sure how mine is saying 1.5.0 .

I'm not good with code more a poke and hope but I can learn.

Hi Alessandro,

You are correct: the posted version of file wsjt-dev-guide.html is very
old, and has now been deleted. I have posted instead a current copy of
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx-doc/dev-guide-main.html

It is not complete, but is currently the best we have.

Thanks for catching the typo in the source file environment.adoc, also!

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT Developers Guide

2014-10-16 Thread richard stanley
Hi Joe

The hamlib3 download link
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4192709/Hamlib-integration-wsjtx.zip
doesn't work.
Is there another place to get it ?

Hi Alessandro,

You are correct: the posted version of file wsjt-dev-guide.html is very
old, and has now been deleted. I have posted instead a current copy of
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx-doc/dev-guide-main.html

It is not complete, but is currently the best we have.

Thanks for catching the typo in the source file environment.adoc, also!

Hi Richard,

Been trying to play using “svn export --force

but keep getting an error ending in

  svn: E731001 Unknown hostname ‘svn.berlios.de’

I tried it in linux as well with a similar error.
Is it still valid or just down today ?
Joe's repository has been moved to SourceForge due to BerliOS deciding to no
longer host OSS projects.

  any help would be appreciated.
