Re: Xquartz (non-) usability. Drawing speed. Startup etc

2020-01-04 Thread Cheng-Yang Tan via X11-users
FYI, at least for me, a clean install of X11 doesn't work/start properly. I
had to install Xquartz first and then install X11. Once that is done, only X11
needs to be run.
Unfortunately, on Catalina, local xterms just doesn't work properly and I have
an activation/focus problem with X11 on Catalina as well (see my previous pos).
On the bright side, I've not had problems with remotely opened X programs from
Linux boxes.
YMMV

 Yes, it's a version of X11 from x.org.

You install Macports then you do a "port install xorg-server".  That puts
an X11.app into /Applications/MacPorts.  You can double click it or drag
it to your dock and click it there.  It's just like the one installed by
XQuartz.

You want to make sure /opt/local/bin and /opt/local/sbin are in your path,
as that's where the the X11 apps (xterm, xclock, etc) are stored.

Re: cmd-tilde is not alt-tilde post catalina

2019-12-15 Thread Cheng-Yang Tan via X11-users
This is very weird. I just tried both cmd tilde and alt tilde on Mojave and
focus change with both methods work. But both methods do *not* work on
Catalina. alt-tilde shows "~" on the commandline on the xterm in Catalina.
And on Catalina, from my previous post, also do not get any focus change with
Spotlight but does with alt-tab. Very weird.

I have seen similar change of behaviour in Emacs for MaxOSX* which I'm a
dedicated user of, but it happened when I moved from Sierra to Mojave
(IIRC) (note: skipping High Sierra in the path, again IIRC).

I dug real deep into this, and what I found was utterly perplexing. The
codes send by the keyboard hand been swapped right to left, so that
augmenting keys on the left (e.g., Option-Left) was suddenly sending key
codes for the ones on the right (e.g., Option-Right), and vice versa,
which obviously sent Emacs off the rails in a jiffy.

I have sent a bug report about this to Apple, but, alas, I have heard
nothing back.

I wonder if something happened again (going back go normal?) with
Catalina. I haven't tested it yet, so I don't know.

I hope this helps further debugging. You could test, e.g., using the
debugging tool "xev" that will show you the exact X11 events sent to the
app for mouse movements and clicks, and keyboard key presses and
releases, including key symnbols.

Catalina: Weird context switching problem with xquartz (and x11)

2019-11-28 Thread Cheng-Yang Tan via X11-users
Hi guys,   This is a very weird problem that I've never seen. I am migrating
from my MacBook Pro 15 running Mojave to my new MacBook Pro 16 running
Catalina.
On Catalina, I have installed both Xquartz and X11 (1.20.6 using MacPorts). I
have found that Xquartz (or X11) cannot context switch context with either
Spotlight or clicking on its icon in its original directory, for example
clicking on the icon in Applications/MacPorts/X11 does activate X11 on the
menubar. The only way to activate Xquartz (or X11) is to click on the Xquartz
(or X11) icon on the DOCK.

Summary of actions on Catalina:  (1) Start Xquartz or X11.  (2) Xquartz (or
X11) icon appears in DOCK.  (3) X11 appears on menubar  (4) Switch away to some
other app.  (5) Try switching back using Spotlight. Spotlight finds Xquartz (or
X11) but menubar does not switch context to show Xquartz (or X11) menubar.  (6)
Try switching back by clicking on original icon that is in
Applications/Utilities/Xquartz (or Applications/MacPorts/X11), menubar does not
switch context to show Xquartz (or X11) menubar.  (7) Clicking on Xquartz (or
X11) icon in DOCK switches context successfully. XQuartz (or X11) menubar
appears.
I have never seen this problem prior to Catalina. I have not seen any other app
behave this way as well on Catalina.
This Xquartz and X11 is a complete fresh install and so is there some security
switch that I need to throw to allow the correct context switching for Xquartz?
Has anyone seen this as well? Catalina bug?
Thanks (and Happy Thanksgiving!)
cytan
