[Xastir] Online Maps selections needing attention before next release.
Okay everyone; we have a release about to drop and we might as well FIX SOME PROBLEMS that have languished way to long! Specifically some of the online map .geo files that are built in to the program that DO NOT work; such as: Online/CanadaTopo250k (currently only a placeholderfile in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps) Online/CanadaTopo50k (currently only a placeholderfile in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps) Online/OSM_tiled_osmarender Online/OSM_tiled_skiing Online/OSM_tiled_topOSM_0_relief Online/OSM_tiled_topOSM_1_contour Online/OSM_tiled_topOSM_2_features Online/TXRadar(points to http://mesonet.tamu.edu which appears to be abandoned) Online/USRadar (points to http://mesonet.tamu.edu which appears to be abandoned) Online/WMSRadar(points to http://mesonet.tamu.edu which appears to be abandoned) Online/terraserver-reflectivity(currently only a placeholderfile in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps) Online/terraserver-topo(currently only a placeholder file in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps) Online/terraserver-urban (currently only a placeholder file in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps) Online/terraserver (currently only a placeholder file in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps) I remember a discussion thread that some of the OSM_tiled_* are possibly no longer available from a while ago; should we consider dropping those map geo files from the source and thus clean up the maps presentation view for newer and future users? The same should be considered for all of the Placeholder .geo files and the MesoNet related Radar.geo files in my opinion. Others have proposed fixes to the missing radar screen availability that do work and are acceptable IMO. In the case of Online/USRadar the patch on SourceForge presented by Kevin Otte N8VNR (see http://sourceforge.net/p/xastir/patches/3/) works 'FB' on V2.0.5 as does a large group of files created/modified by Kevin W Paetzold K1KWP that allows one to select any individual Radar site. I have lost track of where I got those files for the moment but am still researching. 73 Dave KB3EFS -- David A Aitcheson david.aitche...@gmail.com Go Green! Re: [Xastir] Installation Notes for Ubuntu 14.04
The battle wasn't with Xastir at all. Just the dependency problems and flying blind while fixing them. I used the previous update scripts as a guide and eventually it all worked. Right now I am using it to something a bit unorthodox. My friend is a ship's master and he is uses HF APRS. I have Xastir tracking him (ya, I know it could be done with aprs.fi but where's the challenge) as his cargo ship moves around the world. Right now he is in harbor in Israel. So I guess you could say it is working. OH, the move was from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 so that might have been part of the issue causing source. Thanks again. Regards, W.T. Regards, Lee - K5DAT On further investigation I agree with Lee K5DAT that the OSM_cloudmade_*.geo files should also be removed. Thus, I propose that if no objections are made or solutions are proposed (other than the Radar solution that I propose below)in the next approximate 24 hours _DEADLINE BEING 2359 UTC ON 11 JUNE 2014_ that the following files be stricken from the Xastir CVS tree: CanadaTopo250k.geo CanadaTopo50k.geo OSM_cloudmade_1.geo OSM_cloudmade_2.geo OSM_cloudmade_5.geo OSM_cloudmade_998.geo OSM_cloudmade_999.geo OSM_tiled_osmarender.geo OSM_tiled_skiing.geo OSM_tiled_topOSM_0_relief.geo OSM_tiled_topOSM_1_contour.geo OSM_tiled_topOSM_2_features.geo terraserver.geo terraserver-reflectivity.geo terraserver-topo.geo terraserver-urban.geo TXRadar.geo USRadar.geo WMSRadar.geo This leaves us with just two items in the /usr/local/share/xastir/maps/Online folder on a Linux system. As a replacement for USRadar.geoI propose the following text for a file called latest_radaronly.geo #[latest_radaronly - fixed url from srh.noaa.gov to radar.weather.gov by K1KWP - 2012-09-12] #[latest_radaronly - produced from .gfw file by K1KWP - 2006-07-18] #URL http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ridge/Conus/RadarImg/latest_radaronly.gif URL http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/Conus/RadarImg/latest_radaronly.gif TIEPOINT 0 0 -127.6204 50.4066 TIEPOINT 3400 1600 -66.5179 21.6525 IMAGESIZE 3400 1600 REFRESH 720 This geo file is just one of a much larger set of files that have been created and updated by Kevin W Paetzold K1KWP. I have this placed in my directory structure at /usr/local/share/xastir/maps/ridge but it could just as well go in the /usr/local/share/xastir/maps/Online folder. Curt, I kindly request that you make these commits once the embargo has passed and any other updates that Tom Russo has pending are applied provided his updates are not going to be offset by the updates that I am proposing. Adding a I-gate function to Xastir would be a [(coding nightmare)^(Grand-Mal-Epileptic-seizure)] to say the least. What? Xastir has had Igate functionality for many years. Those are the small programs ideal for running headless. I've tried all 3 of them - aprsg is not good as a Tx Igate because it can't be limited to gate only messages to RF, which is standard. I like the format of the text config file for aprsg - may have been a little easier than aprx or dixprs, but I have been able to get all of them to work. Dixprs is a bit tricky when you first try it with AX25 because the ax25 port is referenced as ax0 or ax1, etc. as the case may be instead of referencing the name of the ax25 interface in /etc/ax25/axports like other software does. In Linux, Xastir already supports Igating, and so does YAAC. JavAPRSIgate also runs in Linux, which is an adjunct to javAPRSServr. Also aprsd works as an Igate, and APRSIS32 runs fine in wine, so Linux has a lot more choices than those 3. I understand DireWolf also can Igate, but I've not tried it. Hi Lee. i bow to your superior knowledge i have aprsg running on Ubuntu 14.04 .i have config it to do the same as our other local I-gate which is off the air at this time..using FT-2800 to TNC-X it takes messages from APRS-IS and TX to the local APRS repeater the incoming Igate area is limited to 1300 kms so that i dont flood the repeater with too much signals. I have heard that Xastir can IGATE but have only seen how to configure it as a Digipeater...how can Xastir be set up to do what im doing with aprsg 73 David VK4BDJ On 11/06/14 12:29, Lee Bengston wrote: On Tue, Jun 10, 2014 at 7:16 PM, David djm...@bigpond.com wrote: Hi.agree that update would be good ability to have an included igate that can be configured to my knowledge linux only has 3 igate programs worth looking at aprsg,aprx2,dixprsthe only one ive got working is aprsgthe other two i cant get to work with a AX25 port and a TNC-x...at least i havent got the configs correct will keep trying.
