[Xastir] Xastir in dual mode
OK, I don't know if using the term "dual mode" is accurate but for lack of a better term here it goes I have Xastir running on a laptop and a TinyTrak4, I also have one of the Argent GPS units. Now when I connect the TT4 to the laptop I am able to see other APRS units in the area. When I connect the GPS unit to TT4 using the splitter cable I am able to see my position on aprs.fi but not on my laptop. I've tried to set up the GPs unit with Xastir using both options in the device settings but no joy. When I try to introduce the GPS unit using one of the two options I am unable to see any of the other APRS units in the area. If I run the GPS/TT4 units by themselves and fire up the laptop and pull the data from an internet connection I can see "myself" Anyone know of a step by step set of instructions or is able to shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it. 73 Jess ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://lists.xastir.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/xastir

My Feeling is "Locked means Locked". But I do not know how hard it would be to script the lock feature on the rest of the items. When working the Seattle Marathon a couple of weeks ago I was using the Pidgin Jabber client and a couple of copies of Xastir at the same time. When I closed each Jabber popup the mouse click didn't end there but ended up zooming/re-centering my map screen for the Xastir underneath. It got real annoying real quick. My intent was to add a feature just as you describe. Done. I did NOT implement the zoom/pan lock for the following features: display_zoom_image Track_Me last map position track_gui.c:Track_station() Find Station Map Display Bookmarks What's the concensus on those? Should we pan/zoom/track for any of those functions, or should they be disabled as well when the map lock is on? No virus found in this incoming message. [Xastir] Downloading Tiger Maps
I have been playing around with downloading the Tigermaps and saving them locally on my system. I have figured out some of the files I need but the biggest issue I am having is that the maps I save locally do not have the same quality and clarity as the ones that are accessed from the net. I am assuming that the data/shapefiles I am downloading are the same that are pulled from the net on the fly. Can someone shed some light on what I might be doing wrong here? Re: [Xastir] Feature updates?
Since we are talking about features. There is a freebie piece of Emergency Management GIS software called MARPOLT and this software runs on the WIN32 platform. Now one of the features I like about this mapping software is the ability to download tiger map lines directly from web and save them locally. I know you can download the tiger info manually then do all the converting to make it run in Xastir, but I was thinking that having the same feature that MARP:OT has would be make things a little easier for users. One scenario that comes to mind is if a SAR team receives a call from a county or other area outside of their normal operational area. All they would have to do prior to deployment would be to fire up the downloader and select the new area. You'd really have to see how MARPLOT does this first hand to appreciate the feature/function. Great software anyway you shake a stick at it though. Jess KC9QEA Brett Friermood wrote: Hi all, I remember I had a discussion with Curt quite a while ago about having the option to turn off transmitting of certain objects, but continue transmitting others. I was wondering if any work had been done on accomplishing that? I also have a suggestion to have a couple more audio alarms added. Currently Xastir can alert you when it has heard a new station, you have received a message, a station is located within your proximity settings, there is a band opening, and a weather alert has been received. I'm hoping additional alerts can be added for when your station transmits a position packet, and when that packet is echoed from a digipeater. I have had the opportunity to use a Kenwood TH-D7 while portable on a mock search and rescue when we were testing the digipeater function of a mobile mounted TM-D700. It was really nice using the D7 because I had it set to beep when it transmitted a position packet and also beep when the echo was heard from the digipeater. Because of this, just by ear I knew when I had transmitted my position, and when I had made it into the digipeater. These extra audio alerts don't seem like they would be too difficult to add, but I think they would be very helpful to have especially when mobile. And if they were set up just like the existing alerts anyone not wishing to use them could just turn them off. I recall seeing a version 2 mentioned at times on here. Does anyone know where any information on that is located? Would that be on the Xastir developer list? [Xastir] On to the next question
First of all, thanks for the replies on my first post. Even though I thought I figured out how to fix it I guess what I did had no effect. Regardless, it is working now and for that I am thankful. Now the next question. I intend to use Xastir primarily in the field which will have no internet connection. Could someone point me in the right direction on how to store maps locally on the computer so it will not go out to the net and retrieve them. I see that maps can be stored locally and I understand where to put them. I just need to know is there an automated process of saving maps (preferably street level or topo's) on the hard drive? I am looking at setting up a directory structure like such: /States /Illinois /Sangamon /Macoupin /Montgomery ETC. Eventually I would like to have individual maps that would cover each of the counties in Illinois. Thanks for all the help. Re: [Xastir] Xastir Newbie having receive problems
I figured out the problem. Just for the sake of passing this along in case some other newbie runs into the same problem. In the station set up section I told the software that my radio set up is a bit better than what it really is. before I told it that my antenna was at 20' at 4 watts, I upped that and other stations started showing up on my screen. I guess when using that part of the config it will screen out anything that it thinks is outside of it's "normal" coverage area. Thanks, Jess J Hunter wrote: After installing Xastir and getting it configured I am running into a bit of a problem on the receive end.
