[Xastir] (no subject)

2019-05-09 Thread Curt Mills
I received this from someone who temporarily cannot post to the Xastir
list. I was wondering if the change that was made recently for
GPS/Glonass/Beidou/Galileo NMEA sentences would also be a fix for this.
Seems to me Tom changed the code so the first two NMEA characters are
ignored, which should fix this issue. Here's the question:

"you may remember that some time (a couple of years) ago I raised an issue:

I’m using Xastir on my sailing boat and the GPS onboard has the NMEA
sentencies starting, not with the usual $GP, but with $II (Integrated
instrumentation). For this reason the (then) current version of Xastir was
not recognizing the navigational GPS, and I had to use a spare one."

Unfortunately a lot of the APRS-IS servers require authentication before
they'll send data. So, no callsign = no passcode = no Inet data.

My experience is that no passcode was needed to read data from the
'full-feed' or 'fixed filter' ports, but for port 14580, the user-defined
filter port, the server wouldn't accept the filter string and begin
sending data until the callsign was authenticated. Seemed strange at the
time, since the filter string command doesn't become part of the APRS-IS
stream, so there is no chance of it being gated to the air. Possibly this
is the situation where a -1 is supposed to be used?
Even with a passcode, If I specify a filter that is referenced to my
position, I still get no data if I set the interface to 'no transmit'.
That makes sense - it can't compute the filter if it doesn't know my
position.

Although you need an amateur radio license to TRANSMIT with APRS, you don't
need one to monitor it receive-only.

In the US there is no requirement to take any courses to obtain an amateur
radio ticket, only the requirement that you take the necessary tests for the
license class you wish to obtain and operate in.

You can do this but you end up with an unverified connection which will not
allow you to send packets into the server. The problem with this is that the
default filter on most servers for 14580 is m/500. This requires you to send a
position packet into the port before the filter will start to send you any
data, but you can't do this with an unverified connection. You will need to
set the filter to something that will send you packets without needing a
position packet.

Seeing these html2ps messages means that the on-line map server you're
  using has returned an error.

  Here's what happens.

Xastir issues an HTML request to the map server for a PNG file. It ASSUMES
that it gets a PNG file back, and sends it off to ImageMagick for
  processing.

But if the server returns an error, it returns HTML text (usually).
ImageMagick tries to convert the HTML to an image, which requires a script
called html2ps that you clearly don't have installed, so ImageMagick
  is complaining.

But even if you did install html2ps, what you'd wind up with is an HTML
  error
message in your Xastir window instead of a map. And it may well be that the
message is illegible (I had that happen once to the weather radar overlay,
and was wondering why there was a hash of junk in one corner of my map
  window,
and finally figured out that it was poorly rendered, distorted text).

  So there are two problems
 1) The map server you're using is returning an error
 2) You don't have the html2ps converter installed
 3) Xastir doesn't notice that it got an HTML file instead of the PNG it
assumes its gotten
 4) I can't count.

Your best bet to solve the issue is to switch to a different online map
  choice.

But since you mention cloudmade_5 it looks like you're trying to use one
  of
the OSM un-tiled map options. You might like the tiled versions better
  anyway. Try OSM_tiled_mapnik.geo or OSM_tiled_osmarender.geo.

The tiled versions run much faster once they've downloaded a few batches of
tiles, because they're not trying to load the full screen image for every
view. They download tiles that cover part of your view, so when you pan the
work it's done previously is not all wasted --- as you pan, it only has to
download new tiles for the areas that got moved into view, and can reuse the
tiles that were in your previous view.

Maps load but sometimes lags on a map loading online/osm cloudmade 5.geo
which I have chosen in map chooser!
Then it loads osmrender map I have selected in map chooser. I have rerun
the apt-get for imaginemagik and graphicmagik are the latest.
Is okay? It is working properly? thanks Steve kd5mkv

using has returned an error.

Here's what happens.

Xastir issues an HTML request to the map server for a PNG file. It ASSUMES
that it gets a PNG file back, and sends it off to ImageMagick for processing.

But if the server returns an error, it returns HTML text (usually).
ImageMagick tries to convert the HTML to an image, which requires a script
called html2ps that you clearly don't have installed, so ImageMagick
is complaining.

But even if you did install html2ps, what you'd wind up with is an HTML error
message in your Xastir window instead of a map. And it may well be that the
message is illegible (I had that happen once to the weather radar overlay,
and was wondering why there was a hash of junk in one corner of my map window,
and finally figured out that it was poorly rendered, distorted text).

So there are two problems
  1) The map server you're using is returning an error
  2) You don't have the html2ps converter installed
  3) Xastir doesn't notice that it got an HTML file instead of the PNG it
 assumes its gotten
  4) I can't count.

Your best bet to solve the issue is to switch to a different online map
choice.

But since you mention cloudmade_5 it looks like you're trying to use one of
the OSM un-tiled map options.

I have rerun the
apt-get for imaginemagik and graphicmagik are the latest.

Is okay? It is working properly? thanks Steve kd5mkv

Well, yes, and no.

If you do that, you'll be able to see (if you're lucky) that a map server
returned an error in HTML instead of a map image.

These html2ps error messages are actually indicative of a deeper problem

That depends

If you add a kiss interface directly in xastir, you don't

If you wish to share the AX.25 kiss device between multiple applications, then
you will need to have axports properly populated, and kissattach running for
each device
