RE: [XFree86] XFree86 4.3.0 with ATI Radeon 9100 IGP

2004-07-07 Thread Benstead, Kevin

Both of your device sections are using the
same driver "vesa". I
suspect that the vesa driver can't cope with being used twice.

You should replace the "vesa"
with whatever the driver name for your ATI card is. If you look in
/usr/X11R6/modules/devices you should get a list of drivers that are installed.
The string you put in quotes is the
file name without the _drv.o on the end.

Hope I'm not teaching you to suck
eggs.

Subject: [XFree86] XFree86 4.3.0
with ATI Radeon 9100 IGP

Hello
everyone,

[Sorry for a multiple posting. I seem to have reached the archives,
but not the list So I'll try again.]

I have recently bought an ASUS PUNDIT-R barebone system.
The on-board graphic processor is an ATI Radeon 9100 IGP chip.
This chip has both digital and analog outputs.

I have two flat panels, EIZO L685 connected to the analog port and
EIZO L767 connected to the digital port.

I installed Red Hat Linux 7.3, kernel 2.4.20-28.7.
Next I loaded XFree86 4.3.0. (I would like to stay with this for the
moment in case I have to try ATI's propriety driver, 3.9.0 which runs
under XFree86 4.3.0).

My first observation is that the driver used by the Xserver is vesa.

Despite configuring a xinerama server, I only get one screen active, either
the digital screen, or the analog screen, (depending on what was connected).
With both connected I get an Xserver on the screen pre-defined in the
PUNDIT-R's BIOS. (Digital, analog, or both(clone)). But I can't get
xinerama no matter what I do. As soon as I add Screen 1 in the
second
Device section, I get an error:

Fatal server error:
Requested Entity already in use!

I have enclosed the following files.
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
/var/log/XFree86.log.0 (one screen attached)
/var/log/XFree86.log.0 (two screens attached)

Question: Is this integrated chip capable of running a xinerama Xserver? And
why
am I getting the vesa driver?

All help will be most welcome. Thanking you in advance.
My final aim is to have a 2x2 screen xinerama console, using the 9100 IGP
on-board
chip together with an ATI RADEON 9200 PCI card. I have configured
many 4-screen servers
using various MATROX cards, without any problems and without having to produce
a customized kernel.

[XFree86] bug in 4.4.0 i865 driver

2004-07-07 Thread Steve Bellovin
I posted a brief note a week or so ago on problems with an i865 chip.
I'm now fairly certain that I'm seeing a bug in 4.4.0 compared with
4.3.0. On 4.4.0, I'm seeing (EE) I810(0): No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth.
On 4.3.0, it works. I tested both servers on NetBSD-current with the
same config file on an HP dc5000. 4.4.0 always fails; 4.4.3 always works.

The log files and config file are accessible via
http://www.machshav.com/~smb/x-problem/Xlog-44.

[XFree86] problem with displaying X on eOne

2004-07-07 Thread Eric Franz
On my old eOne emachine, with an ATI Rage XL AGP, and no outer
physical controls for the monitor (it is the all in one deal that
Emachines got sued over by Apple) I have installed Red Hat Linux 9,
and X windows, but not Gnome or KDE. It runs gdm, but uses xdm and
ultimately X itself.

With the console style, it fits the monitor perfectly, as well as the
splash screen for grub, but when X starts, the video image is shifted
to the left, and part of the screen is cut off...and there is a giant
black bar along the right side of the screen. Also, the screen's
height is smaller than what could fit the monitor.

Xvidtune does absolutely nothing, and all my previous changes to the
XF86config file and other files have not done a thing (cept when I set
the refresh rate too low on XF86config, then it didn't work, but I
fixed that).

Anybody have any clues as to what is the problem and how I can go
about fixing it?

Attached are my XF86Config and XFree86.0.log files.

-Eric-
