Re: [XFree86] No screens found.

2003-10-15 Thread Risenhoover, Paul
You need to send the XFree86.0.log file (look in /var/log) and your
/etc/X11/XF86Config file

Hi,

I have a problem with starting my graphic interface on my Linux
station.

I already tried to install a newer version of Xfree86, and updated
my graphic driver (RadeOn 9100) that I found on the ATI website. Once I did
the update, and tried to open with startx, it tries to start, I see a grey
screen, with a black little cross (une croix), then it goes back to a black
screen, I hear my screen that mades some refreshes, but it does this in a
loop, and so I cannot even retrieve the text mode.

   Can you help?

   Kind Regards,

[XFree86] SOLUTION: ATI: no screens available RedHat 9.00 (and other problems)

2003-10-14 Thread Risenhoover, Paul
Hi All,

There have been a lot of questions about an issue with the new XFree86
that comes with RedHat 9.0. Specifically, the driver ignores the
modeline and eithe (a) can't find a working screen (ATI) or (b) can't
drive a non-standard resolution.

Other symptoms are that the Modelines set in XFree86Config are being
ignored.

This issue is in bugzilla and it's marked as resolved. I had the same
problem but was able to find a work around.

Here's what I did.

1 - Go to http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/drivers/ and get the drivers
specific for your configuration and the XFree86 binary. In my case,
with an ATI card, I downloaded the following files:

XFree86
ati_drv.o
atimisc_drv.o
r128_drv.o

(These might all not be necessary).

2. Go to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers and replace the existing
drivers with the ones you just downloaded. You should save the old
ones, probably.

3. Go to /usr/X11R6/bin and replace the copy of XFree86 you find there
with the one you just downloaded.

4. Reboot your machine. In my case, I needed to power down and back up.

That should do it. As soon as my machine came back up it was working
perfectly. The fonts look better too.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to help out.

Best,
Paul

Re: [XFree86] SOLUTION: ATI: no screens available RedHat 9.00 (an d other problems)

2003-10-14 Thread Risenhoover, Paul
Hi Solomon,

Who's to say? Those drivers are built each night from cvs. So if you check bugzilla
( http://bugs.xfree86.org/query.cgi ) for your problem, find it, and it's marked
RESOLVED, and the problem was with the driver, then it could help.

What kind of card is it and what message are you getting? My ATI Mobility 4 is
working with hardware acceleration.

Paul

would this also resolve hardware acceleration issues or only for missing

screens? I have redHat 9, and have been unable to get my 3d card to do

any sort of acceleration.

thanks,

sol

[XFree86] Probably Lost Window Manager [was SOLUTION: ATI: no screens available RedHat 9.00 (and d other problems)]

2003-10-14 Thread Risenhoover, Paul
Solomon -- I'm looking back at your original post and it looks like you probably
overwrote some Gnome (or KDE) configuration files. It sounds like when you start your
machine you're loading twm (see if you've got a process that ends in wm -- it's the
window manager).

You need to configure your system to start another window manager. That's beyond the
scope of this document but I'l lhelp you if you AIM me.

kalarmd is probably KDE Alarm Clock Daemon

It's an ATI Radeon 7000. Every web page I've seen says this card is

supported.

The exact problems I'm experiencing were in an eariler post of mine,

from a few

days ago. There's no error messages. The most annoyinf problem is that

when I

re-installed X, I somehow overwrote some important configuration

files,but I've

not sure which ones or how to restore them. It is affecting my login

screen, it

looks like crap. Another unusual bug has to do with the fact that ever

since I

reinstalled X, I have a process known as kalarmd that is running the CPU

at max

(or close to maximum) load. Not sure what this process is for or why it

suddenly

decided it needed all those CPU cycles.

As far as 3d acceleration, I tried installing DRI, it didn't work (I

kept getting segfault erros with glxgears). I went

through all the trouble shooting tips, none seem to work.

thanks,

sol

I'll have to try again when I get home tonight

[XFree86] ATI Mach64 direct rendering

2003-10-14 Thread Risenhoover, Paul
Ok,

I've been trying to get DRI working on an ATI Mach64. It's running
RedHat 8.0 and I just used up2date to ensure I got all new code, plus
the new kernel. I've attached all the obligatory files for your review.

Thanks,
Paul
