[XFree86] Radeon 9200: unable to start X with xf4.4.0
Hi all... I have a problem similar to a few already posted, but there may be differences here, and I'm flummoxed, so it's worth a try! Have installed 4.4.0 on top of RH v.9. Whenever I try to start X, I get the grey screen with the X cursor but it goes no further than that. I have an ATI Radeon 9200 SE card, supported by the Radeon driver. As well as the error messages others have reported regarding inet6, I get a line: (WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found. The card (an AGP card) I have has three outputs - a DVI, a TV-out and a standard analogue out. The latter is the only one with anything connected to it - my vga monitor. Therefore, there should be no need to specify a Bus ID (?). Can anyone spot my (probably obvious) mistake? Config file and log file are attached. Many thanks and merry xmas, Chris XFree86.0.log Description: Binary data XF86Config Description: Binary data

Re: [XFree86] Radeon 9200: unable to start X with xf4.4.0
* [EMAIL PROTECTED] [19/12/2004 1412EST]: I have a problem similar to a few already posted, but there may be differences here, and I'm flummoxed, so it's worth a try! ^ Good word. Have installed 4.4.0 on top of RH v.9. Stop right there. When you install XFree86 on top of anything, it gratuitously overwrites a few files. One of such files is /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc which is the system-wide, default script used to start up your X environment (window manager, etc). The xinitrc is run by 'xinit' (see the man page) which in turn is generally started by 'startx' from a console. However the xinitrc could also be run if you log in through a graphical display manager like xdm. I don't know the specifics of your setup. In short, RH's version of xinitrc is in the RPM package 'xinitrc'; in RH9 I believe it is xinitrc-3.32-1.noarch.rpm. If you reinstall this RPM chances are you will get your old behavior back (but with the new X binaries that you installed). Whenever I try to start X, I get the grey screen with the X cursor but it goes no further than that. You're probably actually running Twm without realizing it. Twm is small (but functional) window manager that is distributed with XFree86, and it is the window manager that is started by the xinitrc that XFree86 installs. I have an ATI Radeon 9200 SE card, supported by the Radeon driver. As well as the error messages others have reported regarding inet6, I get a line: You will get the error messages about inet6 if your kernel has no support for IPv6. These are harmless. (WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found. I didn't look at your config only because this is a warning message, not an error. An error would be prefixed with (EE) and the X server would abort. If you only have one video card I think you can get away without specifying a BusID, but I may be wrong. :) Many thanks and merry xmas, Happy Holidays to you too. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
[XFree86] RAdeon 9200, ibook and XFree86 (Please HELPPP)
Dear all, I tried to install Yellow Dog linux distributio on my iBook G4 that has a Radeon Mobility 9200. unfortuantelly the X server it is not working. So I decided to upgrade the Xfree86, but I do not know which vpackage to take. I ran the command sh Xinstall.sh -check and it told me that i shoult try Linux-ppc-glibc21 but I could not find it on the server. Ihave seen that there are lots of people that had my problem. So can anyone please tell me how did they solve it as I am on the edge here. Thank you very much. -- --- Sorin Cristian Cheran School of Computing University of Leeds Woodhouse Lane LS2 9JT - Leeds Tel: +44 113 343 7288 +39 347 138 6154 --- ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
RE: [XFree86] RAdeon 9200, ibook and XFree86 (Please HELPPP)
o If the binary distribution reported by the Xinstall.sh script is not present on the XFree86 site, then there are two possibilities: first is that it has not uploaded yet. This is likeliest possibility if you are looking shortly after the release date. The second possibility is that your target will not be be available at for this release. This is like- liest possibility if you are looking about two weeks after the release date. Check here URL:http://www.xfree86.org/4.4.0/UPDATES.html for information about updates to our binary distributions, and here URL:http://www.xfree86.org/4.4.0/ERRATA.html for errata related to this release. Looks like possibility number 2 to me. YDL is not exactly a major player in the Linux world. Maybe they have made packages themselves. Otherwise you can use the source and roll your own. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of S C Cheran Sent: Friday, May 21, 2004 3:32 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [XFree86] RAdeon 9200, ibook and XFree86 (Please HELPPP) ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
[XFree86] Radeon 9200 slow with Xfree86-4.4.0
Hi *, Couldn't find anything helpful in Google. I used to run 4.3.0 with a Radeon 9200 card (pretendign I had the ChipId 0x514d) and decent performance. glxgears said something about 1500 fps. When I upgraded to 4.4.0 (same hardware, Linux kernel), I noticed that the desktop feels sluggish and glxgears comes up with a mere 500fps. DRM is enabled. $ glxinfo name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes [...] $ /sbin/lsmod [...] radeon106720 1 agpgart17268 1 (autoclean) [...] Switching back to 4.3.0 gives me the good old performance. The only things that looked funny to me in the 4.4.0 log file (compared to the 4.3.0 log file ) were many references to PCI rather than AGP: (II) RADEON(0): initializing int10 (II) RADEON(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000 (--) RADEON(0): Chipset: ATI Radeon 9200 5961 (AGP) (ChipID = 0x5961) (--) RADEON(0): Linear framebuffer at 0xc000 (--) RADEON(0): BIOS at 0xcf70 (--) RADEON(0): VideoRAM: 65536 kByte (128 bit DDR SDRAM) (II) RADEON(0): PCI card detected [...] (II) RADEON(0): [pci] ring handle = 0xe4b55000 (II) RADEON(0): [pci] Ring mapped at 0x44253000 (II) RADEON(0): [pci] Ring contents 0x (II) RADEON(0): [pci] ring read ptr handle = 0xe4c56000 (II) RADEON(0): [pci] Ring read ptr mapped at 0x40016000 (II) RADEON(0): [pci] Ring read ptr contents 0x (II) RADEON(0): [pci] vertex/indirect buffers handle = 0xe4c57000 (II) RADEON(0): [pci] Vertex/indirect buffers mapped at 0x44354000 (II) RADEON(0): [pci] Vertex/indirect buffers contents 0x (II) RADEON(0): [pci] GART texture map handle = 0xe4e57000 (II) RADEON(0): [pci] GART Texture map mapped at 0x44554000 (II) RADEON(0): [drm] register handle = 0xcf80 (II) RADEON(0): [dri] Visual configs initialized (II) RADEON(0): CP in BM mode (II) RADEON(0): Using 8 MB GART aperture (II) RADEON(0): Using 1 MB for the ring buffer (II) RADEON(0): Using 2 MB for vertex/indirect buffers (II) RADEON(0): Using 5 MB for GART textures (II) RADEON(0): Memory manager initialized to (0,0) (1280,8191) (II) RADEON(0): Reserved area from (0,1024) to (1280,1026) (II) RADEON(0): Largest offscreen area available: 1280 x 7165 (II) RADEON(0): Will use back buffer at offset 0x140 (II) RADEON(0): Will use depth buffer at offset 0x190 (II) RADEON(0): Will use 34816 kb for textures at offset 0x1e0 (II) RADEON(0): Using XFree86 Acceleration Architecture (XAA) Are the references to PCI correct? [XFree86] Radeon 9200: DRI on one head and 2d on second head ?
-- Hello I'm trying to setup an ATI Redeon 9200 card for a multimedia PC. The goal is to be able to connect a video projector on the DVI head (screen 1) and the monitor on the main head (screen 0). And my kid would be rather disapointed if he can no longer play with gltron on the main screen, so I need a working DRI on the main head. With Xfree 4.3.0, I am able to setup DRI on one head, *or* set up a dual head (2 screens setup). But in the latter case, the DRI is disabled: Radeon driver does not support DRI with dual head setup even if the NoAccel option is set in the second Device. IS this statement correct or did I miss something ? In the xfree86 4.3/4.4 radeon driver you can't mix DRI and dualhead. It may work without xinerama, depends what you are doing. So I was considering to set up a single head configuration for X on the main head and set up a frame buffer on the second head. Thus I could use directly the -vo fbdev and display the video directly on the second head without going through X. Is that possible ? (OK, I'm drifting off-topic) Does anyone have a pointer and how to set up a radeon frame buffer on the second head ? AFAIK, the radeonfb kernel driver does not support multiple heads yet. Thanks for any help. It sounds like what you may want is my radeon driver with mergedfb support. [XFree86] Radeon 9200 3D graphics acceleration problem

[XFree86] Radeon 9200/DVI with latest XFree86
The 9200SE cards seem to have some bandwidth issues driving large DVI displays. There are some options you can try to improve the situation: Option DisplayPriority string where string is high, auto, or bios and Option MonitorLayout tmds, none if you only have the dvi monitor attached. tmds, crt if you have both attached. For more info see the radeon man page: http://www.botchco.com/alex/radeon/mergedfb/cvs/DRI/final/radeon.4.html Another thing you might try is driving the DVI at a lower refresh rate, say 56 hz. Alex -- I recently bought a Radeon 9800 SE based card made by PowerColor (model r92le-c3s, box makred with a SE sticker) and a Viewsonic VX2000 LCD monitor and I can't get the DVI port to work well. I'm running RedHat 9 and with the X driver included with it and the chip id overridden to just about any known radeon card, I get no picture at all on the DVI port (though the X logs indicate that it found the monitor). Searching the mailing list archives on various places indicated that the 9200 card is not quite compatible with other radeons, so I pulled down the current XFree86 tree (as of midday 11/9) and built X from scratch. Running the resulting X server produces a image on the DVI port if I have only the DVI port connected, but either the image quality is horrible (closest approximation would be a tv screen with lots of snow) or the picture does not appear at all. Oddly enough, if I plug the analog port in, the analog picture is fine (sans some visible ringing in the signal). The monitor and card work fine in Windows XP, so I know that both parts are properly connected and configured. Attached are the XFree86.0.log file and my XF86Config file. Make sure XFree is not accidentally choosing a mode that would be fine for the analog side, but is overdriving the DVI port. I've had this problem in the past; the digital transmitter is very seldom capable of keeping up with the analog side (and very few will do 1280x1024, and many can't even do that at 60Hz, even when the analog output is capable of 4x as much). RE: [XFree86] Radeon 9200 SE support?
Thank you for your reply, I've unsuccessfully tried the binary RPMs for RedHat (I use RedHat 9.0) that are available from the ATI website and according to ATI; they support the Radeon 9200 (although there is nothing on the site that mentions the SE edition). As far as I've heard, the SE edition is supposed to be compatible w/ the standard 9200 (maybe it's just an identification problem?). Does anyone have more information on this? Re: [XFree86] Radeon 9200 SE support?
I also just bought such a video card, and I ran into the same problems as you have. The latest release version of XFree86 (v4.3.0) doesn't support this card, but as of development snapshot 4.3.99.8 (i.e., also in the latest CVS sources) there is support for it. I managed to download and build the mentioned snapshot and to install it on top of the XFree86 installation provided by my SuSE 8.2 system. So now I have the XFree86 ati radeon driver installed and working, but there's still a problem with the DVI output of my card, which is what I'm interested in. The problem is currently being worked on (http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673). If you're happy with the analog RGB output the solution I've mentioned works just fine. If you want DVI output from your card, it would be interesting to know if XFree86 v4.3.99.x works for you, or if you get the same problem as me. [XFree86] Radeon 9200
Hi All who reside here, I have just purchased a Radeon 9200 grahpics card and find that the XFree86 4.3 I have installed does not in fact have that card listed in the card database. I understand from some research I have done on the XFree web sites though that it is in fact supported now! Yippee! It is the RV280 engine, but will not configure via sax2 in my SuSE 8.2 setup. Just kicks out when it can't find the card. I haven't seen any updates recently for SuSE binaries and could probably update things from XFree86 latest stable release, if I knew how! :o) In looking over all that, it didn't quite make sense to me in the way I am familar with installing, building source files. So here come the questions. Anyone running this card in SuSE or others with 4.3 presently? Is 3D supported from XFree or do you need to use the ATI drivers for that? Are there new binaries for SuSE somewhere? If not, how do you compile and install the newer stuff to use that card? Hi Patrick, Unfortunately, Radeon 9200 support is not included in the base XFree86 4.3.0 distribution. Adding it on is a job for various distributors - Debian and Red Hat add it on, but apparently SuSE haven't. I think your best bet would be to contact your distributor directly and ask them to include Hui Yu's Radeon patchset; if they don't know where to get it, point them at me.
