running xkbcomp manually so I can track it down.

startx runs Xorg, Xorg forks execs xkbcomp:

It is not pretty in the slightest, and replacing the fork/exec with calls

Re: libXt 1.1.2 has regressions too

2012-03-13 Thread Alan Coopersmith

Okay, I'll try to get a 1.1.3 release out this week - thanks for the quick
response fix.

On 03/12/12 11:56 PM, Jeremy Huddleston wrote:

I reverted the commit which caused the regressions in libXt-1.1.2. The issue
was that libXt was retrying when it got a POLLHUP rather than passing it along
to Xlib which would handle it with XIOError. After investigating this issue,
I'm not sure that the original patch that caused this actually needs a fix any
more. I think the issue may have been limited to the !xcb case in Xlib which
probably didn't handle POLLNVAL. I believe that xcb should be setting the
connection error state on POLLNVAL, so it should follow the same path into
XIOError, but I'll followup on that in the original bug report as time allows.

Re: x forwarding?

2012-03-14 Thread Alan Coopersmith

On 03/14/12 08:24 AM, gene heskett wrote:

I was pointed at the xauth command to fix this, but that man page has to
rank near the top for all time obtuseness, and when executed on the non-
working machine, returns:

gene@lathe:~$ pwd
/home/gene
gene@lathe:~$ xauth list
xauth: creating new authority file /home/gene/.Xauthority
gene@lathe:~$ cat .Xauthority
cat: .Xauthority: No such file or directory

That's a misleading message, fixed a couple years ago in the xauth sources:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xauth/commit/?id=1c701094169b6e33f7faf21a269e949bf134a326
and included in xauth-1.0.5 and later releases.

Also note that a number of systems now no longer use $HOME/.Xauthority but
instead set the XAUTHORITY environment variable in your session to a
session specific file in /var for a variety of reasons, and if you're trying
to access xauth cookies from outside that session you'll need to find the
XAUTHORITY value in that session to match it.

[ANNOUNCE] protos: bigreqs fonts kb record scrnsaver xcmisc xext

2012-03-22 Thread Alan Coopersmith
These modules consist of the headers and specification documents that
define various extensions to the X11 protocol. The headers are needed
to compile either the X server or the Xlib-based client API's for these
protocols and clients using those API's.

These releases consist of documentation improvements - mostly building
on the conversion to DocBook/XML documents in the prior releases of these
protocols. For XKB, this is the first release of the documentation in
DocBook/XML format, thanks to Matt Dew's conversion of it from the original
FrameMaker format. Many thanks are due to Matt Gaeton for the huge
amount of work represented here to make our documentation more usable for
both our users and the maintainers.

seems pretty complete, anyhow), but I can't find any header file on my
system that actually declares the XkbSetBoundKeysDelay function. Does
anybody know where this function would usually be declared, or even
better, know of an X utility that would allow me to play with that
function without writing my own tiny utility?

In GNOME, it's in the Keyboard Accessibility preferences panel.
Other desktops with accessibility support should have something similar.

Seems like a bug in your brand new compiler, since the code appears correct.

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/tree/dix/main.c?id=xorg-server-1.11.4#n167

shows the code in question is:

and include/dix.h defines that array as:

In the configure step I'm getting a warning:

Those are likely unrelated to your error and probably ignorable. If you don't
want to be warned about them don't pass them.

In the make step I'm getting an error:
 In file included from glxdriswrast.c:39:0:

Was there a change in xserver that replaced --with-fountdir and
 --with-dri-driver-path?

Yes, in Xorg 1.8 --with-fontdir was changed to --with-fontrootdir,
and in Xorg 1.10 --with-dri-driver-path was replaced by use of
pkg-config to read the path from dri.pc.

How can I fix the warning and the error?

Do you have libdrm (and the appropriate -devel package) installed?

[ANNOUNCE] xf86-input-mouse 1.8.0

2012-07-27 Thread Alan Coopersmith
xf86-input-mouse is the Xorg server mouse driver for non-evdev OS'es.

This release drops support for Xorg 1.6.x, and now requires Xorg 1.7 or later.
On Solaris, it fixes a compatibility issue with the Xorg 1.13 ABI changes,
allowing this driver to build for the upcoming Xorg 1.13 release.

It also exposes Device Node (read-only), Mouse Middle Button Emulation
(read-write) and Mouse Middle Button Timeout (read-write) properties via
the Xinput properties API to allow distinguishing between multiple devices
and controlling the 3rd button emulation options at runtime, without having
to edit xorg.conf.d files and restart the server.

Alan Coopersmith (9):
  sun_mouse.c: Remove redundant option checks
Set XI_PROP_DEVICE_NODE property to string from Device option
  Set button axis labels
Add settable properties for middle mouse button emulation
  Strip trailing whitespace
  Expand tabs to spaces
Raise bar for xorg-server to 1.7 for XINPUT ABI 7
Fix vuidMouseAdjustFrame to build with Xorg 1.13 ABI

Re: command line retrieve list of kbd layouts and variants (to use with setxkbmap)

2012-07-27 Thread Alan Coopersmith
If you're trying to parse them, why not use the original files such as
/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.xml instead of the man page that's generated
from them? The XML XKB files have a far more reliable format than the
man page, which can change at any time, since we don't expect people to try
to parse it.

Re: Applying Xmodmap only for one mouse

Sorry for this noob question, but:

I have a notebook with three mice, (touchpad, trackpoint USB mouse)

I use the following xmodmap with the USB mouse:

(To swap buttons 2 10).

Now this unfortunately makes the middle mouse button of the touchpad /
trackpoint useless, which only have 3 buttons.

Is there some way to apply the xmodmap only to the USB mouse ?

I believe xinput --set-button-map with the device specified will do what
you want.

[ANNOUNCE] xscope 1.4

2012-11-19 Thread Alan Coopersmith
xscope is a program to monitor the connections between the X11 window
server and a client program.

Compared to 1.4 RC1 version fixes some bugs in building the transport code
when not using libxtrans and adds a -V option to report the version number:

Alan Coopersmith (5):
Rename sockaddr_un variable from sun to saun to avoid conflict with
#define sun
Don't include Xtrans files if xtrans is disabled
When not using xtrans, check if -lsocket -lnsl are needed for
Solaris/SVR4
Add -V option to print version and exit
  xscope 1.4

Compared to 1.3.1, this release adds these new features:

- RANDR decoding updated from just 0.x protocol to handle 1.0 - 1.4
- Atoms recorded from InternAtom GetAtomName to use for display in
  other requests referencing the atoms
- Property requests now also show these property types in a more natural
format instead of as just lists of bytes:
UTF8_STRING, atoms, cardinals, integers, and windows
- new -I command line flag to enter interactive mode immediately at startup
- experimental support for reading a previously recorded file.
If you run xscope -r -v0 xscope.raw, then you can later run
xscope -f xscope.raw to decode the data.

libXTrap is the Xlib-based client API for the DEC-XTRAP extension.

XTrap was a proposed standard extension for X11R5 which facilitated the
capturing of server protocol and synthesizing core input events.

Digital participated in the X Consortium's xtest working group which chose
to evolve XTrap functionality into the XTEST RECORD extensions for X11R6.

As X11R6 was released in 1994, XTrap has now been deprecated for over
15 years, and uses of it should be quite rare.

skipping means it didn't build it, so judging by the output you skipped all
 modules.

I thought there was a build.sh flag to output the default mod list, but I don't
see it or remember it. The file I pass to --modfile has a the modules listed
as:

util/macros
font/util
doc/xorg-sgml-doctools
doc/xorg-docs
proto/bigreqsproto

and so on.

Of course, I also run it with the -n flag to keep on going after error, since
I'm usually just using it to see which modules build cleanly and which I now
need to fix to build on Solaris for some reason.

Nope - the Xorg server itself runs on BSD, Solaris, Linux, Windows, MacOS
kernels. No version should be specific to just one Linux kernel version.

Various video drivers will have dependencies on matching kernel driver versions,
especially the ones that rely on Kernel ModeSetting (KMS) in the kernel driver,
but that's outside the core Xorg server itself, and depends on the video device.

It means you're using a libpciaccess that felt like printing a message that as
best I can tell is a leftover debugging message that never got cleaned up:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libpciaccess/tree/src/solx_devfs.c#n626

I've seen it before, but never tracked down what it's really saying since it's
never seemed to be related to an actual error.

You may or may not have better luck with a X server from this decade instead
of trying to run one from 4 years ago - you'd certainly find more people willing
to investigate and help on a current server such as 1.14 than on 1.6.

libpciaccess release, or one of the developers has time to kill, or one
of the developers who also works on a distro wants to be able to package

That is wrong, the patch mentioned in that mail thread was applied long

And the issue is most definitely in X:

This happens on my Arch Linux 3.8.11 and I've seen it happen also on

Agreed. What should we do?

To start with, xorg-devel is how you reach the X developers, but with no

X11 has no concept of menus - those are implemented in toolkits (usually) or
applications (in some rare cases). Similarly once the events are delivered
to the client, you'd need some form of debugger or remote introspection to
find out if the client has processed them or still has them in a queue to
handle later - there is no X11 API to query event queue state from another
program.

If you got that after killed Xorg, then that's a common client response.

I guess in all these examples I should see the mouse pointer, particulary in the
last example of the link I pasted before, I don't see my mouse, clicking doesn't
works etc. I guess it's linked with my IO error.

Unless you start Xorg with the -retro flag it won't draw a cursor until a client
(usually the window manager or desktop environment) sets the cursor image. This
is one of many changes in the years since people last wrote books on Xlib. (They
don't anymore since the advice is much shorter now: Don't use Xlib directly,
use a toolkit.)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] X.Org Security Advisory: Protocol handling issues in X Window System client libraries

X.Org Security Advisory: May 23, 2013
Protocol handling issues in X Window System client libraries

Description:

Ilja van Sprundel, a security researcher with IOActive, has discovered
a large number of issues in the way various X client libraries handle
the responses they receive from servers, and has worked with X.Org's
security team to analyze, confirm, and fix these issues.

BTW, I see that Ilja also mentioned these (without giving full details
on the holes) in his recent CanSecWest talk, which is an interesting
read:

I still agree with most of my quotes that got captured there, including the one
blaming daniels for not saving us from all manner of XKB woes. (I know, XKB2
would fix it all, if only the laptop was returned by the thief we all curse.)
