[Xpert]Matrox G450 + 1600x1200 + 24-bit color

2002-01-14 Thread Steve Wingate

Anyone know if a Matrox G450 AGP has enough bandwidth/clock/whatever to
do 1600x1200@24bit color at refresh rate of > 72hz?

Anyone managed to get an ATI Xpert98 (PCI) to do 1600x1200 at 24-bit
color? I can only get it run 1600x1200 at 16-bit, even though the
hardware should support it. The card has 8MB RAM and should do
1600x1200@75hz @ 16 million colors. The monitor is a Viewsonic PF790
which should do 1600x01200@77hz. I've tried every Modeline I could come
up with and nothing works yet, even with with a Modeline going down to
60hz.

I have a TNT2 Ultra now, so I was looking for something better than that, although I
have no real faults with the card. It seems to me that even if you just want 2D, the
nvidia cards are still the best choice.

Well, I use FreeBSD and I figure I'm not going to get great 3D performance no matter
what with nvidia only producing linux binary drivers. So I may as well go for the
absolute best 2D I can get. Cost really isn't an issue, other than not wanting to pay
$400 for top-end 3D performance I'll never see anyway.
I just want support for high resolutions and refresh rates, say 1920x1440@85hz, true
color.

[Xpert]Best 2D-only card for X11

2002-01-03 Thread Steve Wingate

What is the best pure 2D card in X11 with non-binary-only (read nvidia) drivers? Does
a Matrox G450/550 compare to GeForce & Radeon in 2D?
