It's pity because the older versions installed from the deb repositories are sometimes unusable because they doen't list some printers (even some older ones: this is not limited to new printer problems); often fail to implement important features of printers that do occur in the list, like double-sided printing; and they often have bugs like failing to recognise some common paper sizes. I always try the latest HPLIP from HP first; fortunately it has worked for me in the last few years, except that 3.23.5 which I'm using has a completely broken A4 paper setting (it thinks it's A3) and a wholly bogus-looking setting called "Index Card A4 8.27 × 11.69in" (!) which actually works. I have no idea what the people who assemble the list of paper sizes are smoking :-) I recommend going to https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/ and installing one version earlier; and if that doesn't work, one version before that, and keep going back until one works. Re: [xubuntu-users] I cannot install printer - xubuntu 23.10
Hi Hartmut, Unfortunately ' hplip ' is still incompatible with ubuntu 23.10 Maybe it was better if I kept the Ubuntu LTS 22.4 version but it is now so. On Windows 10 the printer works and, fortunately, this PC does not have to work in any studio where it prints a lot. Hallo Victor, Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately ' hplip ' is still incompatible with ubuntu 23.10 I did some tests and now I solved it by installing the printer on Windows 10. Greetings. As Marc suggests, start first with the standard software. Maybe your printer is newer than what is available with the HP version in the respositories. Only then do you need to turn to the HP install script from HP. But, newer HP printers should also be CUPS compatible and not need a specific script (at least for basic printing features). https://www.openprinting.org/printers A good overview of CUPS is at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CUPS And, what does the HP script say about compatibility with Xubuntu 23.10? Another option is to skip the HP software entirely and to turn to gutenprint (especially for older printers) at https://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/. It appears from your message that the HP script requires software that is not included in the respositories for xubuntu 23.10. Finally, a trick I have employed with HP printers is to install drivers for an older model that is in the same engineering path as the model I have (i.e., a deskjet 500 driver for the deskjet 550 I have). HP does not really change things in the same printer series. The trick is finding the right series for model of printer you have. -Victor -- xubuntu-users mailing list xubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/xubuntu-users

[xubuntu-users] I cannot install printer - xubuntu 23.10
Hello, *I can't install an hp printer*. My operating system is xubuntu 23.10 The hp instructions say to download and run this command : 'sh hplip-3.23.12.run' Unfortunately I get an error message : INSTALL MISSING REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES I installed numerous dependencies, in the end this remains: INSTALL MISSING REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES - *warning: Missing REQUIRED dependency: python3-pyqt4 (PyQt 4- Qt interface for Python (for Qt version 4.x))* warning: This installer cannot install 'python3-pyqt4' for your distro/OS and/or version. error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency. Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer. After a few unsuccessful attempts I tried with ppa: rock-core / qt4 which could contain the required package. *But I still get an error, invalid repository :* $ sudo apt-get install -t ppa:rock-core/qt4 libqt4-declarative libqt4* libqtcore4 libqtgui4 libqtwebkit4 qt4* Reading package lists... Done E: The value 'ppa:rock-core/qt4' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources *I tried: $ sudo apt install hplip-gui* Install yes, but it *doesn't work* as it should, error msg: Unable to open device hp:/usb/DeskJet_2700_series?serial=CN35JFW2RF. printer may not be connected I still think I have to install python3-pyqt4 but I don't really know how.
