[~Jim_Brennan], the ASF warning is from dependency-reduced-pom.xml which is a
generated file. I do find it odd that findbugs didn't run because {{Findbugs
executables are not available.}}.

In order to get the branch-2 pre-commit build to run, we need to re-upload the
branch-2 patch so that it is newer than the branch-2.8 patch.

I kicked the pre-commit build, and since the branch-2.8 patch is the newest,
that is the build it is running.

I changed the assignee back to [~rcatherinot] - I was just putting up some new
patches.

[~eepayne] I think these patches for branch-2 and branch-2.8 are ready.
genericqa did not run on the new patches, should it have?

Original version of path.008 did not include the checkstyle fixes.  I replaced
it, but apparently too late for the genericqa tests.

Put up a patch.009 to trigger another round of tests.

As this has become a blocking issue for YARN-7677, I took the liberty updating
[~rcatherinot]'s patch.

I made minimal changes to it, fixing some compilation issues that cropped up
due to changes since then, fixed a bug in one of the tests where it was
stopping after a single iteration instead of running through all combinations,
and adding a few more test cases for getEnvDependencies.

I tested this locally and it appears to work well.   I put up a new patch to
get the ball rolling on this one again.

It's true, the preserving order approach would require frameworks to opt in by
providing a map that preserves order. I agree we shouldn't change the API to
force frameworks to opt in, but I wouldn't have a problem with frameworks
needing to make a change if they want to preserve order. On the other hand, I'm
not against detecting dependencies if we decide we want to go that way.

While preserving the user's order sounds nice, I don't think it is possible in
practice without requiring changes to app frameworks. The YARN
ContainerLaunchContext API only takes a Map to specify the users environment,
and many (all?) frameworks are using a HashMap here. That means the walk of
the user's variables is not necessarily the order they inserted them into the
map, so we have no idea what the desired order of variables is. Fixing that
requires making changes to the app code calling YARN which we cannot control.
So unless we want to break compatibility I think our only option is to try to
detect the variable dependencies as this patch does.

On second thought, it's extremely unlikely that NM whitelist variables could
reference user variables.  Details are in [this
comment|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-7677?focusedCommentId=16350353=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-16350353]
 on YARN-7667. I think we'll be fine if we make sure the NM whitelist
inherited variables appear first in the launch script then followed by the
user's variables in the order they are specified in the container launch
context. YARN-7667 should be taking care of the NM whitelist variables, so
this JIRA can tackle ordering the user's variables.

Sorry to come to this late. We ran across an instance of this debugging some
environment variable ordering issues in YARN-7677.

While the LinkedHashMap solution sounds nice and clean, I don't think it can
work in practice. The problem is we have more than one list of environment
variables: the user-provided list and the inherited variables via the NM
whitelist. To make things worse, we don't know how they could be
interconnected. The problem in YARN-7677 occurred because variables in the
user's settings referenced variables in the NM whitelist, and the whitelist
variables were listed after the user variables. Theoretically an admin could
setup NM variables that have "plugin" variables that could come from
user-provided settings, and thus we can't always assume NM whitelist variables
come before user variables.

In short, I think we'll have to do some sort of dependency analysis. I'm not a
fan of parsing the shell syntax to figure out the dependencies in the value,
but I don't see a viable alternative to get all the variables, user-specified
and otherwise, listed in the proper order.

Thanks for your feedbacks.

No problem for me if the patch is not used in preference to a LinkedHashMap
solution (even after 6 rounds :) ).

If the control over the env order is to be left to the client (and so, to any
external lib that relies on yarn) and enforce the use of a LinkedHashMap in any
Yarn entry point I think such kind of patch level is beyond my current
knowledge of yarn's internal code and protobuf.

Thank you for the comment [~templedf].
That option raises the question to prepend or append to the client list in
{{sanitizeEnv()}} and in the code that populates it for the context and whether
the assumption is true all the time. The serialization code in
{{addEnvToProto()}} needs to be changed to iterate a LinkedHashMap order and
the deserialization code in {{initEnv()}} to create a LinkedHashMap. Moreover,
since it relies on the client and the application to give the right order all
the time, so it probably involves changes outside Yarn.
Do you also suggest to change the container launch context interface to accept
a linked hash map or iterator instead of a map? Is the plan to keep the
interface but handle it correctly, if it is a linked hash map?
A positive effect of the LinkedHashMap is that the algorithm does not need to
run at every container launch.

more effective to use a linked hash map to preserve the order given by the

are you sure about the double % ? i've tested it on windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10
and double-ing the % does not escape it.
set A=toto
set B=%A%
set C=%%A%%
echo %A% %B% %C%
produce toto %toto% %toto%, so i always got A's value, so both B and C depend
on A.
{quote}
Yes. However, it only works this way, if you are running within a batch file
like Yarn does. Are you using these commands typing to the console?
{quote}
I still prefer to keep it the way it is because it is the last line of the
while that does this test. Personnally when i read code that double check
things I tend to think the code is still under dev and not yet production-ready
and then i start to tripple check everything i read. So for me, such double
check would lead in code maintenance/review time increase. if this is really a
blocking issue and does not permit the patch to be accepted, then i'll change
it.
{quote}
It is okay, it is not a high priority issue.
{quote}
I've reworked the code to match you algorithm so the comment (and its tipo) no
longer exist
{quote}
Thank you!
{quote}
I've tested it with deps in reverse order and having each env entry depending
on each of its successors and with 100 entries. On my computer it returns in 0
or 16ms (no lesser time precision). My algorithm start to be slower in a
perceptible way with the same test case when we have more than 200 entries. it
hits the second for computation when i have more than ~700 entries. So I've
implemented the new algorithm (more or less, i use recursion to handle the
stack stuff) but i need to rework the tests too because both algorithm do not
exactly order the same way, even if both of them do the job. I'm currently on
it (just to let you know).

Thank you!

Thank you, [~rcatherinot] for the reply!
1.
{quote}
echo %%A%% in windows does output A's value and not %%A%%...
{quote}
The double %% sign is the escape for %, so a batch program like the one below
will print %A%. I tested it on Windows 10 within a batch file.
(http://www.robvanderwoude.com/escapechars.php)
a.bat:
{code}
set A=foo
echo %%A%%
{code}
The output running a.bat:
{code}
%A%
{code}
2.
Yes, it is not a bug now, but it may lead to errors, if someone changes the
code later. I think it is a better practice to use the pattern that you also
use below and the index never exceeds the limit by 2:
{code}
1005  if ((++i) >= l) {
1006break;
1007  }
{code}
3.
I think you are missing an 's' at the *:
{code}
855 // 2 - we need a map implementation that support* entries to be
{code}
4.
We cannot rule out that someone will want to run YARN with very short queries
in the future. In this case however your algorithm will be on a critical path.
It might help to prove the efficiency to add a unit test with 100 environment
variables with dependencies in reverse order, to verify a limit on the runtime.
5.
Understood.

Remi Catherinot commented on YARN-5714:

Hi,

thanks for the review and here are my answers :

1 - echo %%A%% in windows does output A's value and not %%A%%, so %%A%% depends
on A so it is normal that the patch returns A as being a dependency. i think
you tried it with a none existing variable. If B does not exist, echo %%B%%
output is %%B%% but since the patch cannot really assume what will be the
target environment and the known variables in it I assume that if someone
through the hadoop configuration use %A% syntaxe it means he really expect A to
be known at runtime on the container side. So i won't fix because this is not a
bug.

2 - the last "i++" is the last line of a while loop with its test condition
being "i won't fix

3 - i don't see any tipo, can you be more explicit + add the line below because
the sentence is truncated in your code snippet (the next line starts with
"removed", because the full comment is "... to be removed " but since i
tried my best to follow code rules i had to wrapp the comment to avoid a long
line. waiting for more feedback

4 - containers are launched and will runs for several seconds, minute even
hours. the loop is used only once at the container start. I mean, your
algorithm may be faster/slower than mine, may consumme more/less memory but
this woul be less than 1 millisecond difference and less than a few bytes. Is
it really an issue ? i don't think so. may be better than rigth now but it does
the job with acceptable performance (CPU & memory) => won't fix

5 - i've considered using regular expression, but i can't see a way of handling
with simple quote/double quote/slashes and other special bash syntaxes with
regex. regular expression may be used in the windows case but again, i'm no
windows expert so i prefer to keep the patch and its parsing the way it is now
for a first release and leave it to people with better skill/knowledge the
tweaking in maybe a 2nd release. Plus by experience, i've seen regex that
looked ok, runned well, but on specific strings going to burn CPU as hell for
several minutes and no match while it is usually returning in a few ms on most
of the input strings. my algorithm just goes forward (i++ only, never i--) and
has no back reference, so i'm assured each env entry string will be scanned
char by char only once and each char will be read only once in a timely
fashion. My conculsion would be : regex can't do the job or it would be even
more complexe than the actual patch code and may fall into really heavy
performance issues. max time used to parse + don't see how to do it in a single
regex => won't fix

to conclude : i stay with patch 4

Thank you, for the patch, [~rcatherinot]!
1. "%%A%%" should not match any variable in Windows but the current patch
returns "A". Double %% is replaced with single %
2. This is a potential double increase of i without checking i < l
{code}
994 if (c == '\\') {
995   i++;
996 }
997 if (c == '\'') {
998   break;
999 }
1000i++;
{code}
3. There is a typo in this sentence:
{code}
855 // 2 - we need a map implementation that support entries to be
{code}

4. You have an iteration that has a depth of 3. This will run at every
container launch, so it might cause perf issues. In particular
{code}copy.containsKey(envDep){code} will be called again and again (6 times?)
until all dependencies are added, if a set is ordered like this:
{code}
D=$A $B $C
A=*
B=*
C=*
{code}

Have you considered an algorithm, where you scan the dependencies only once?
You may not even need the hash map for it in this case.
{code}
for (env: envsI)
  stack.push(env)
while(!stack.empty)
  env = stack.pop()
  if (!env.marked)
env.mark
if (env.dependencies.empty)
  stack.push(env)
  for(dep : end.dependencies())
stack.push(dep)
  else
ordered.putifnotthere(env);
{code}
5. It might be slower (needs to be tested) but have you considered regex for
parsing? It would make the code shorter and easier to understand.

HOMELOC depends on both HADOOP_MAPRED_HOME and HADOOP_COMMON_HOME. This is more
or less the test done line 1560 in TestContainerLaunch when i'm testing that
${A:-$B} extract A and B as dependencies. Other tests take care of testing $var
${var} and ${#var} syntaxes, so i limited the test of a var in a var to just $B
and not ${B}.

The parser in fact does not see that B is used inside A, it just sees A and B
which is enought for dependency checking. The parser is designed to evalutate
which would require to see that B is inside A.

I've got a concern that not all of the weird bash corner cases have been
tested. For example, if I try to assign:

{code}
HOMELOC=${HADOOP_MAPRED_HOME:-${HADOOP_COMMON_HOME}}
{code}

what happens?

Thanks for raising this issue [~rcatherinot], Agree to this issue even i too
had faced something similarly earlier but not so frequently, may be you can
share your patch for review. in the mean time will add you as contributo and
assign the jira. Earlier i thought simple modification where in we use
LinkedHashMap instead of simple HashMap, as order of insertions seems to be
proper may be you can verify.

> ContainerExecutor does not order environment map
>
>
> Key: YARN-5714
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-5714
> Project: Hadoop YARN
>  Issue Type: Bug
>  Components: nodemanager
>Affects Versions: 2.4.1, 2.5.2, 2.7.3, 2.6.4, 3.0.0-alpha1
> Environment: all (linux and windows alike)
>Reporter: Remi Catherinot
>Priority: Trivial
>   Original Estimate: 120h
>  Remaining Estimate: 120h
>
> when dumping the launch container script, environment variables are dumped
> based on the order internally used by the map implementation (hash based). It
> does not take into consideration that some env varibales may refer each
> other, and so that some env variables must be declared before those
> referencing them.
> In my case, i ended up having LD_LIBRARY_PATH which was depending on
> HADOOP_COMMON_HOME being dumped before HADOOP_COMMON_HOME. Thus it had a
> wrong value and so native libraries weren't loaded. jobs were running but not
> at their best efficiency. This is just a use case falling into that bug, but
> i'm sure others may happen as well.
> I already have a patch running in my production environment, i just estimate
> to 5 days for packaging the patch in the right fashion for JIRA + try my best
> to add tests.
> Note : the patch is not OS aware with a default empty implementation. I will
> only implement the unix version on a 1st release. I'm not used to windows env
> variables syntax so it will take me more time/research for it.
