Yeah, I don't know why 3.2 was put to the target versions. Since this patch
heavily relies on the HADOOP-15691 feature which only exists in trunk, it can
not be backported into 3.2.

On a second thought on my previous comment, it seems that RawLocalFileSystem
that is set to fs.file.impl by default does support append, though sometimes
LocalFileSystem is set to that, which does not.

Uploaded patch using the {{PathCapabilities}} interface committed in
HADOOP-15691, also added a test for the
{{LogAggregationIndexedFileController#getRollOverLogMaxSize}} method. Please
review.

Also I had to add an exception [~ste...@apache.org]. If I want to use the
{{LocalFileSystem}} for local files which is the default for this log
aggregation, it says the it does not support Append. What is the reason behind
this? From the code all I can see is that it inherits this from
CheckSumFileSystem where Append is not supported, but for local file systems I
think this is not the case.

Thanks for the comment [~ste...@apache.org].

HADOOP-15691 would be really convenient. I'm on reviewing it. As I can see you
were working on lately on the PR, so I take a look at that patch.

HADOOP-15691 proposes adding a new method, getPathCapabilities to allow you
check exactly that. Sadly, its received approximate 0 reviews, and is only
something I'm working on in my spare time.

I would like to see it in, and given that YARN is shipped in sync with
everything else, now is a good time for other people to offer to get in
involved in this

If I offer to update that patch, who in this JIRA discussion promises to review
it with a goal of getting it committed? As once it is in, the check would as
simple as

{code}
 if (fs.hasPathCapability("fs.feature.append", path)) {
 ...
} else {
 //fallback
}
{code}

that's it: no need to second guess things downstream, write code which only
works on some stores, as determined by trial and error and support calls.

But: if nobody puts their hand up to say "I need this and will help get it in"
-you aren't going to get it

Uploaded patch v2.

There has been changed a lot since the last updated, and let me update each and
every one of you:

[~sunilg] I think introducing a global config is not a good idea. The problem
is that a global configuration is not depending on the filesystem: we still
have to get the information whether the filesystem supports append or not, and
it makes no sense to disable that configuration: that would make it broken
anyways. The cleanest and easiest solution to collect the schemes that we want
to support, and add a contract-based test (look YARN-9525).

[~wangda]: the config is now enforced.

I also removed s3n since it's deprecated, and I missed the fact the wasb and
adls supports append (according to their filesystem contract xml).

[~ste...@apache.org], I don't know whether do we have to explicitly define the
set of filesystems where append is not supported. I didn't find any elegant way
to get this information (whether append is supported) directly from either the
FileSystem or its subclass. Any suggestions on that one?

[~snemeth]: Since the tests got removed, so the first point of yours is no
longer valid. The other ones are incorporated in the patch.

The tests got removed, since I make a comprehensive filesystem contract based
test in YARN-9525 which will also incorporate the checking of rollover size.
Jenkins will probably say a -1 on this, but this is a precondition of
YARN-9525, so we have to push this in first.

Let me know if you have any concerns.

Oh, one more thing:
As you are overriding the config in
LogAggregationIndexedFileController.getRollOverLogMaxSize, at least you need to
log a statement that you overridden the value so users wouldn't be confused by
any chance why the value ended up to be zero.
Do you agree [~adam.antal]?

Hi [~adam.antal]!
2 comments:

1. In the test code, you are testing IFile format but the error messages are
wrong, like: "TFile controller... " Those should start with IFile, right?
2. With the code where you are checking for the non-appendable schemes: I would
put the non-appendable scheme strings into a Set and simply check if the string
is in the set or not, so the if condition could be more straightforward.

Hi [~adam.antal]

Could we add a new config which says
"yarn.logaggregation.non-appendable-fs.enable" or similar and can be set to
TRUE. So for any cloud storages, we can set this and we dnt need to add all
filesystems in if conditions. Thoughts ?

> In YARN-9525, we made IFile format compatible with remote folders with s3a
> scheme. In rolling fashioned log-aggregation IFile still fails with the
> "append is not supported" error message, which is a known limitation of the
> format by design.
> There is a workaround though: setting the rollover size in the configuration
> of the IFile format, in each rolling cycle a new aggregated log file will be
> created, thus we eliminated the append from the process. Setting this config
> globally would cause performance problems in the regular log-aggregation, so
> I'm suggesting to enforcing this config to zero, if the scheme of the URI is
> s3a (or any other non-appendable filesystem).

Thanks [~adam.antal],

I would vote to enforcing the roll size to zero if the scheme is known to be a
non-appendable file system. (We may need a list of non-appendable FS to make it
to be more comprehensive).
