I made a different silly face and he responded in kind. This went on for a few more silly faces when I just cracked up and it stopped. He continued performing the whole time without missing a beat...now singing in key. Nice recollections. But are you sure that you didn't mix memories from two different concerts? Because my understanding is that John Smothers was hired by Zappa only after the Rainbow Theatre incident, in December 10th, 1971.
