You're preaching to the converted here- I use 50% old school hardware  
and 50% Digital Software stuff- the joyous thing about the software  
is that it's the same in the morning as the night before- the joyous  
thing about the hardware is the interface- ie dedicated sliders for  
functions that don't move around or have 18 different meanings  
depending on what mode you are in.  And the sound.

bangs on about the difference between digital and analogue -  
there are differences in the sound but the beef for me with a lot  
of the old stuff we use is that it's totally unpredictable, the  
sound changes based on a number of factors and it's not fun after

Hertz records (a new label, possibly from Belgium) and it's the best  
thing he's done in aeons- emotional techno?  THIS is emotional

Me too- the only problem was that when he started doing all the  
Ignitor re-releases of his earlier material (Basic Bastard etc) they  
REALLY churned them out quickly and I think people got a bit  
overwhelmed by it all- he does everything from deep vocal house to  
complete techno insanity (Industrial Metal) but always with a  
slightly warped viewpoint- I've met him a few times and he's  
basically a bit bonkers in the nicest possible way.


If you never got into it at teh time check out Tank- Bite Befoer You  
Bark- Buzz played it on Saturday night to great effect and it's been

I don't actually mind him that much although I don't find much of his  
music very interesting- I'm not too keen on the crazed Hawtin fanboys  
who worship him but then he's probably not too crazy about them  
either :)


I can never work out if he's just a nice guy who's pretty clever  
about his marketing in order to make himself stand out from the crowd  
or if he really believes that micro mixing of 1000's of snippets of  
tracks and people releasing unfinished work for other people to remix  
at home is really the future?  He certainly knows how to get people  
talking though!  You'd better watch out Tom- he might be one of these  
weedy looking guys who does Tai Chi and will pull your head off  
before you've landed the first blow!

That pretty much hits the nail on the head for me- during the weekend  
James Pennington and I were discussing how he often leaves tracks for  
years without releasing them - the ultimate test- the test of time-  
if you set out to make music that is of the now or futuristic  
then generally your stuff wont hold up as well stuff that's just  
good.  The idea that new producers have a template or at least a  
well known framework is, in my eyes. very true indeed.

yeah, it may well be a generational thing- my gut feeling is that  
vinyl will always have a cool factor that will appeal to people  
that will help things tick along for a good while yet- for our  
particualr music and where club gigs are concerned, I still haven't  
used anything that comes close to the experience of two vinyl decks  
and a mixer- in a situation like this I'm not particularly interested  
in endless choice of tracks that MP3 playback systems offer- I'm  
happy to ride the uncertaintly of having to play with what you've got  
to hand and make the best out of what I've got and also, for me,  
there IS a difference in sound quality between MP3, CD and viny.


As for home listening there is no denying the attraction and  
convinience of the ipod and computer based music- I spent ages  
importing all of my my CD collection into I-tunes but my main  
computer isn't in my living room so I can only access this music  
through my ipod and scrolling through loads and loads and loads of  
artists/albums to find what I'm looking for is a bit of a pain-  
sometimes its just easier to bung an actual CD in the player and let  
it go!


Very interested in everyones' opinions though and thanks very much  
for taking the time to let me know what you all think

(313) Partry report

Just a quick account of the last couple of days here in Glasgow-  
similar to the exhibition we hosted last year, we stripped down the  
technology part of the shop and gave it over to Abdul Haqq's prints  
from his 3rd Earth company  covering everything from the  
Intergalactic Beats material for Retroactive back in the day through  
Red Planet and on to Timeline and the more modern UR stuff- after a  
venue let us down we also decided to show the IF2 documentary in the  
shop on the Friday night- things got pretty packed but the beers were  
flowing and it was a really good atmosphere- Haqq, Buzz and Jit were  
all there to meet the people.


The documentary has a very home brew, rough and ready feel but has  
moments of great inspiration throughout and some fine insights into  
the background of the music and producers from Detroit- European  
peepz can pick it up as part of the IF2 CD Double pack (Japanese  
import has it too).


The party at the Soundhaus on the Saturday night was one of the most  
incredible I've been to in recent years- the venue was at maximum  
capacity and there was sweat running down the walls by 1 AM- I've  
seen Buzz Goree a few times but on this occasion he took control of  
the crowd in a way I've not seen for an age- it was a blistering  
assault of heavy Techno most of which I didn't know, peppered with  
the odd UR back cat numbers all of which got a severe working over  
through the filters and EQ on the mixer (Buzz played the EQ like Theo  
does but at a much more frantic and exciting pace) and the odd moment  
of joyous uplifting stuff to ease the pain a little.


James Pennington managed to hold his own for an hour or so afterwards  
bringing things down at first with some excellent jackin House/Techno  
hybrid stuff before going pretty crazy himself- Buzz came back and  
did the last hour, never seeming to run out of steam and keeping the  
entire crowd in the palm of his hand until the lights came on at 5-  
the place was still completely rammed, Haqq was jumping about like  
crazy on the stage and everybody went home exhausted and completely  
blown away.  I can't go into details about the afterparty for fear of  
legal action but it didn't get any less crazy there either.


Just when you think you know all about UR and Techno..along comes  
a right hard slap in the face to wake you up again!!!


Sunday night was a big curry-fest round at mine with only Jit  
refraining due to having tried a Vindaloo the day before and being  
slightly shell-shocked by the experience :)  I think Buzz summed the  
weekend up nicely on the way out the door: Mission accomplished.

Alright peepz- a quick question for the more tech-savvy minded  
amongst you:


How many people actually buy digital download music whether from more  
mainstream portals like I-tunes or more specialist ones like  
Bleep.com??  I've spoken to quite a few label owners (all of them  
from smaller independant labels) but nobody seems to be making much  
income from it- any thoughts on the the current, and future, state of  
the format?


I can't actually imagine ever paying £1 for a track in a less than  
perfect format and albums seem pretty expensive when you compare them  
to a normal CD which has cover art etc- I'm not totally against the  
idea but it's not really doing it for me at the moment.  What chall  
think?

Late reply here!

They were good but not life-changing- the Slam tent wasn't exactly  
the most sympathetic of venues- the first 20 mins of UR tracks went  
down like 2 lead balloons (Final Frontier, Numers cover etc) with the  
kids.  The next 40 mins went a little better as the Los Harmanos  
stuff is more House oriented and so is more accesible for a crowd of  
this nature.  They did their best but ultimately the people who went  
to see them expecting UR live were SORELY dissapointed (I found  
myself defending them against quite a few attacks afterwards despite  
not really being that overwhelmed with the show such was the ferocity  
of some peoples' opinions) and the rest of the crowd (who didn't know  
who UR/G2G/Los Hermanos are) just kind of chugged along with them for  
a while without giving it too much attention- don't think it brought  
them many new fans and I know quite a few people in whose estimations  
they defintely went down a little

They also need to make money- it costs a fair bit to fly 6 people  
from the US and they have a pretty extensive equipment list too AND  
they need a pretty big stage for the current band- I take your point  
about playing at clubs like Fabric- there were many people up here  
who said the same when they played the Arches and also at the Slam  
tent at T In The Park- teh Arches gig worked pretty well I thought,  
the Slam tent one, not so much

It was indeed, complete chaos around the time that Vilialobos was on-  
he looked like he had been DJing for about a month when I got there  
(around 6ish) and most of the people were pretty mashed- everybody  
was very friendly though and I really enjoyed the general vibe- it's  
def. the most hedonistic place I've been this year though :)

I played with him back in 1992- he used to DJ with Black Dog and did  
some great music on Ifach, A13 and more- at the time he played a  
great mix of Detroit Techno (1st person I ever heard playing Kaos)  
and UK Detroit-inspired stuff (B-12. Likemind, Luke Slater etc).  I  
have to be totally honest and say a lot of his stuff over the last 6  
or so so years has left me frozen solid rather that cold- he's worked  
with some people I have No respect for (Percy X??) too and  
when I've heard him play it was REALLY dull loopy techno- maybe I'm  
just getting old though :)  Undoubtably, he's a solid guy though, and  
he's still making a living through music- good for him!

There's a small box from Gemini called the i-Key which is pretty  
handy- it records to a USB memory stick with variable bit rates-  
after the recording is over you stick the memory stick into your  
computer and burn the audio file straight to CD- currently sells for  
£99 here in the UK

I've made the long journey twice but I don't really feel any  
particular draw to this event to be honest- it kind of feels like  
they've picked some OK and some very not OK people to play and the  
Detroit to be announced people are tacked on as a necessity since  
the event is held in Detroit.  I haven't got any any axe to grind at  
all with the promoters (I've only ever heard of them through the 313  
list before and there have been an equal amount of I love em and I  
hate em accounts ass far as I remember- I'm just giving the  
viewpoint of somebody who loves music from Detroit (Techno and  
otherwise) and isn't really that attracted to this festival.  I'd  
love to come over to see a few old friends but I can't see it happening.

I was about to comment (from the pov of a european who has been  
before and would like to go again) that the way the line-up has  
been announced and the nature of it so far is unlikely to draw the  
kind of people who'd normal stump up the 100s to come to Detroit  
for the festival.


I like to think that the local artists and djs will be announced  
later but this delay is going to help even less in attracting  
overseas visitors.

Hi,

This is a quick heads-up to let you know about a special one-off  
event happening at the end of this month.  A group of like-minded  
souls from the Traxx, Basic Level, Monox and Rubadub camps have  
clubbed together to secure the services of Gerard Hanson, aka  
Convextion (of Matrix and Downlow recordings), for an ultra-rare live  
performance at 69, Paisley, on Saturday 29th April.


This will be Convextion's first ever European performance and,  
judging by his history  - 10 years of music production with no  
interviews, no photographs, only a handful of low-key live  
performances... we wouldn't hold our breath at the prospect of a  
return anytime soon.  Our only interaction with Convextion,  
throughout the years, has been when he surfaces at irregular  
intervals to drop a slice of timeless deep Detroitian Techno, each  
one an instant classic, winning fans from Derrick May to Mad Mike to  
Swayzak to anyone who knows their onions, really...  In fact UR's Mad  
Mike once described Convextion's music as What Basic Channel shoulda  
done... which is good enough for us.


In addition to Convextion, on the decks will be Martin McKay, long- 
time resident at 69, and Jason Brunton, mainstay of Rubadub records  
and one half of Iridite Recordings. We are also awating confirmation  
of an extended late license (details to follow).


There are only a very limited supply of tickets on sale for this  
event and they are selling now.  We are also putting on a bus, again  
with limited spaces, to accommodate anyone travelling to and from  
Glasgow. We'd love to see you there, so please get down early to  
Rubadub to get your tickets!

Well in Joe's defence I'd say a hefty proportion of the stuff on the  
list isn't directly about Detroit these days- Robert Henke's music is  
certainly a hell of a lot closer (in my mind) to the spirit of  
adventurous electronic music that Detroit helped to foster/inspire-  
there's a shed load of Detroit releases which have been out recently  
which haven't even raised a single comment on the list so a wee  
conversation about Monolake doesn't seem to out of place in the meantime

I've got a Powercore (plus warious Waldorf and Acess 3rd party plug  
ins) and it too works fine with Live on my system- the Virus Ti seems  
to cause a lot of people a lot of problems (in particular a Mr Rei  
Loci of Iridite who hasn't been able to get much out of his since  
getting it a couple of months ago- Cubase SX user)- not saying that  
Live is completely flawless but I would say its the most well  
implemented piece of software I've used since Notator in the early 90's

I discussed this issue with the head of the MCPS in Scotland a year  
or so ago- the basic deal is that they treat audio clips on websites  
to be essentially a fund raising exercise, ie you are trying to sell  
something (duh!) in the same way a radio station is trying to sell  
something (advertising in their case) when they play music over the  
airways- therfore a license fee is due to artists who's music you  
play in the same way that they get paid if their music gets played on  
the radio or used in a TV transmission.


As far as I remember there is a minimal fee due as long as the  
clips are under 30 seconds and a more substantial (i.e. truly eye  
watering) fee if they are of a longer duration- Juno may either be  
paying the larger fee as they are a pretty substantial organisation  
or they may just be chancing their luck.


Of course, as always with these things, artists from small  
independent labels rarely see any of the cash collected by the  
relevant authorities on their behalf and the vast majority goes to  
Dire Straits, Robbie Williams and the odd bit left over for Tiesto  
and Joey Negro.

I kind of championed his sound at the time as it straddled two or  
three different areas of electronic music- Basic Channel type dubby  
Techno, deep vocal House and clicky/glitchy stuff- to be honest now I  
can't actually stand to listen to any more than two or three of the  
tracks produced at that time -so in that context I would class a lot  
of the Luomo stuff as being simply boring- make of that what you will!

sh*tty venue double booked with another event, the night was

I've only seen DM play once but it was a belter. It showed me what it
means to be a truly professional DJ. I've often thought of sharing  
it with

the list. The evening went something like this.


It was an event called Hybrid sometime around '96  in a London  
warehouse
type venue just south of the river. The line-up was mouth watering  
-  Juan

Atkins, Joey Beltram and Derrick May in that order.


It started Badly. After the warm-up came Juan. He played a bad set  
that
got worse. He looked like he'd rather be anywhere but behind the  
decks. He
started getting booed. So he responded by playing 25 minutes of  
beatless
ambient nonsense mixed badly with a beatless mix of strings of  
life. Someone
started throwing empty plastic water bottles at the stage and off  
he went.

Rubbish. Started to think I'd wasted my money.


On came Beltram. As ever, he started with Energy Flash and then  
dropped a
classic set of his own stuff interlaced with plenty of dark Chicago  
jacking
grooves and a load of the Robert Armani catalogue. The place came  
to life.
Then the power went. The music stopped for about an hour. Everyone  
waited it

out though. When the power came back DM came on.


I can only think that DM felt he had to make up for what went  
before. Juan
was an embarrassment, while Joey was great, he was stopped in his  
tracks by

the power cut.


DM dropped an absolutely classic set of house and techno. His  
mixing was
lightning fast, often using the headphones for  just a few seconds  
before
dropping the next track. The crowd responded brilliantly. He worked  
the eq,

and cut and scratched superbly. He went way, way, over time until the
bouncers came to the stage and started shouting at him to stop. He  
wasn't
having any of it so this big bouncer guy just starts shaking the  
scaffold
that May is standing on and the record starts jumping all over the  
place.
May looks at the guy and shakes his head then picks the up the deck  
and
holds it out in his palm right above the bouncer and plays the tune  
again.
This time the shaking doesn't make the record jump. May is grinning  
his head
off, the crowd are cheering like mad and the bouncer looks like  
he's going
to explode. We got a few more minutes of his last track before they  
turned

off the power to make him stop!


He then hung around for 30 mins afterwards chatting with  
stragglers and
getting well deserved thanks and compliments from all. It was one  
of the
best sets I've seen, but most impressive was the work rate, passion  
and
commitment. He could have done

HI everybody- quick message for the listmembers in Scotland, we have  
a couple of nice events this week and next:


Fridayn 22/02/06 Jeff Mills- 10th Anniversary of The Bells.  Jeff  
will be making an appearance at Rubadub around 6.30PM- we'll be  
showing the Bells DVD and he'll be signing stuff/taking questions  
etc- anyone caught dressed as Quasimodo or Esmerelda wil be ejected.


Friday  03/03/06- It's a Biggie- Monolake, Sleep Archive and Mode  
Selector all on one bill and Mr Henke will be giving us an Ableton  
masterclass around 7 at McSorleys Bar (just around the corner from  
Rubadub)
