Hi list - a friend of mine runs a T-Shirt company here in Glasgow that

Their latest release is for a Fear-E x Oldham Industries creation, thought

Fear-E also releases on Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, he's a good guy and a

Re: Michael James vs Derrick May

2020-01-30 Thread ja...@iridite.com
I think he started off with some fairly valid points but has become more
hysterical and dramatic over the month that he's been posting on the
subject (he's been posting fresh "revelations" every day for 30 days to
represent the 30 years that he feels Derrick has been stealing from him).

To my mind, if he really feels he has genuine evidence of Derrick being an
abusive person then he would have been much better pursuing that
separately - mixing it in with his (and Thomas Barnett's) personal business
dealings hasn't done his case any favours at all

Re: The Hydra

2018-12-17 Thread ja...@iridite.com
Sorry I missed you Benn, was pretty hectic and packed venue and I forgot my
charger so was walking about London with 6% charge for most of the two days
I was there

The gig was great - not "clubbing" in my normal experience of it but the
venue is very impressive (Bladerunner/Aliens vibe) and sound and lights
were generally amazing

I'm not normally into BOSH BOSH BOSH Techno so I was pleasantly surprised
by James Ruskin's set and Marcel Detmann played a Prescription track and
maybe a couple of Wild Pitch numbers so generally got he thumbs up too.
Octave One absolutely rocked it for me - superb blend of driving house
rhythms with their tight techno riffs and stabs over the top. Only
downside was the vocal version of Blackwater they played - massive thumbs
down for that one.

The Stingray set was not good at the beginning, there was something
seriously murky about the sound and he couldn't get his groove and then it
totally kicked in and I loved it

Unfortunately I thought Jeff was pretty off form - he was spacey without
being trippy and/or not generally playing with enough energy to move a
crowd and venue of that size. Plus I fxxcking hate The Bells so that
didn't endear him to me at all :)

Interesting venue, I'd def go back and check it again, was a bit weird
being in a club listening to utterly banging techno at 2:30 on a Saturday
afternoon though

All their labour goes into the brand, that’s why they buy out edgy
sports and events, they are after the front covers rather than paying for
advertising. This also helps keep up the claim of being an edgy
“non-marketed brand” - it cost a lot of money to do that.

There target is always young kids, the next generation, pretty easy
when they have a 70% share of the market.

My experience of them is they collect people, creditability and

 agencies either.

I’m surprised that Denise has any support in her heart for people who

Andrew Duke did that interview. It's a priceless artifact. I could go on!

Resident Advisor didn't credit Andrew Duke when they first posted the
video, and why is there a white woman's british voice narrating? It's off
putting. They're using the voice of the colonizer to tell the story of
brilliant, musical escape from enslavement and forced labor. Escape from
 the colonizer.

Oh here goes Denise, making everything about race. But this actually
all the way super duper is all about race and racism.

And how much electronic music culture coverage is based in europe, the
birthplace of imperialism and colonialism? A lot.

Music fans and writers should be more concerned about preserving and
protecting and respecting the culture that made this music.

Why didn't they ask Cornelius Harris to narrate? Why didn't they ask
John Collins to narrate? That would be meaningful to artists and fans
 alike.

Hello everyone - my name is Jason, I'm from Glasgow and I've been on the
list since the 1990's (can't remember exactly when)

I produce music mostly under my own name and run a label focussing on
Glasgow based artists called Iridite - www.iridite.com

I also run a small store called Signal Sounds that concentrates on
electronic music production and Modular/Boutique synths in general
(Denisehit me up if you're even in Glasgow!!) - www.signalsounds.com

I still buy music but my available time to listen to is as close to zero as
makes no difference but I still love getting the odd recommendation from
here and I follow Kent's Bandcamp recommendations eagerly :)

Re: Looking for Elecktroids Elektroworld on vinyl, I have S.I.D.-002 to trade

2016-09-23 Thread ja...@iridite.com
Funny story - about 10 years ago a guy who had worked in Rubadub went on to
work at Warp as an intern (it's Callum, now better know as Spencer from
Numbers). He was going through their stock sheets and noticed they had
200+ copies of Electroworld on vinyl sitting on the shelves at their
distributors warehouse forgotten about for years.

Cue much frothing at mouth by us "HOLD THEM, HOLD THEM!! WE'LL TAKE THEM
ALL". There was then a bit of negotiation to circumnavigate the
difficult world of record shop politics ("yeah...if we give them to you
then "" will have their nose out of joint and we're doing an instore
with them next month and blah blah blah") and it was decided that we would
be allocated around 80 or 100 copies depending on how many copies there
actually were.

On the Monday we were all pacing about the shop waiting for the courier to
come like kids waiting for Santa to arrive. The van pulls up, the guy
get's out and unloads a couple of boxes. Something's not quite right,
those boxes don't look like they're quite 12" squarehm

Open the box and.it's 100 copies of Electroworld on CD. Distributor
had misfiled them on their system as Vinyl.

I think we shut the shop for the day and went to the pub to drown our
sorrows and curse warehouse men up and down the land

Hey James - we were all pretty happy with the way that the program ended up
- a few of the more underground guys from the 90's (in particular
Pussypower, Terry and Jason, who were the first to bring Juan Atkins, Kenny
Larkin, Carl Craig, Ubik, Aphex Twin and Black Dog to Glasgow) weren't on
there but...the target audience is 16-30 and they don't want to constantly
hear old bores like me say how much better everything was in the old days :)

There was a trio of 40 minute Essential Mixes by Glasgow peepz on the
Friday too with Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Sparky (who does stuff on
Numbers) and Jasper James (son of Harri from teh Sub CLub - I remember when
harri used to bring him into Rubadub and sit him on the counter whilst he
was skimming through records, now he's all grown up and DJing at Amnesia in
Ibiza!) - I think they will pop up on Soundcloud too soon

Despite all the amazing well-known guests, I think the best party was one
at the Rhythm Factory in which you played some ace disco and house to warm

Detroit records before they pop up on places like Juno.

Then there are the records that are released by Detroit labels for the
festival. Many labels have historically timed their new releases to
coincide with the festival. You get those in Detroit first. Some of these
are also exclusive to Detroit, such as Theo's spray painted Skteches,
Deepchord DEMF editions, etc. And then on top of that you have people like
KDJ who pull out a box full of mint copies of Shades of Jae and JAN to

Sadly, due to rising costs, poor US market, and poor US distributors,
the brutal truth is that most of the best new Detroit records are now
ONLY available in Europe; basically, although I live in Chicago, when
I want new Detroit music, I order from Juno, Boomkat and Hardwax. I
don't even bother checking US stores anymore if I am looking for

It seems that the whole EDM popularity over here has not helped with

assume that the rising popularity of vinyl is limited more to indie
rock type music, here in the US...

On 2 January 2012 16:31, kent williams chaircrus...@gmail.com wrote:
This fall I was contacted by Kalle from Yore with news about the new
Andy Vaz album Straight Vacationing. I liked this album quite a bit,
played a track on my radio show, and then was distracted by other
music coming through the promo feed*

Then, the other day Mr. Vaz e-mailed me out of the blue to ask me
about how I felt about the record.  I'm enough of a fanboy to still
get a charge out of talking to artists I admire, but his e-mail
prompted me to go back and listen to the record again.  And I think
that it's definitely an album with a lot of depth, and a unique take
on Detroit-influenced techno.  The lead track is called Detroit In
 Me, after all.

Over the past couple years in Europe, using Detroit as  a marketing
come-on has become more common -- often from producers whose music has
little to do with Detroit Techno.  'Detroit' as an empty signifier
apparently has some sort of cachet, but anyone who actually cares
about Detroit and it's music should be offended by it. Too many people
worked too hard for too long in Detroit to make something special, and
slapping 'Detroit' on your music because you want some of the cool to
rub off  is dishonest and Insulting.

That's not what Andy Vaz is about.  If you listen to Detroit In Me
you can definitely get a Detroit vibe, but there's something
idiosyncratic and unusual about how Vaz puts the track together.
There's so many different elements -- a burbling acid line, deep house
piano, and the sustained jazzy chords, the vocal sample -- that get
woven together.  A lesser producer would end up with a busy,
incoherent mess, but in Vaz's hands, it all hangs together.

And it's well worth looking for the download release for the remixes
by Alton Miller, Rick Wade, Patrice Scott, and others (mostly people
who Vaz has released records by on Yore) solidify the authentic
connection Vaz has to the Detroit music scene.

But this is not some sort of slavish imitation of the stylistic
identifiers of Detroit music.  Vaz is full of musical ideas, and
doesn't limit himself to the safe bounds of techno or deep house.
What makes this record good is the way he is able to balance and
overlap many elements in each track, and get them to mesh into
something organic, warm, and always dancey. Yes, Vaz loves Detroit,
and with his label Yore he's sought out some of Detroit's best
musicians to release new music. But he's also has his own musical
ideas, and the way he blends his influences with them is what keeps
 Straight Vacationing vital and interesting.

Hmmm - not going to write it off yet but that remix is pretty guff -
given the extreme musicality of Kenny's Funkfaker album his
collaboration on an Inner City album could potentially be amazing but
not based on this remix!

Hope for better things from the rest of the album

(313) Silly fanboy collectors question...

2011-11-10 Thread ja...@iridite.com
.so, how many of you out there have signed records in your
collection? I don't mean ones you've picked up in a store (I still
kick myself after all these years remembering passing up a complete
set of signed and sealed Transmat and Fragile releases in Ruadub
because they were £1 more expensive than the normal copies and I had
the majority of the tracks anyway)...I mean the ones you've actually
taken the time and bother to drag down to a club night where somebody
you totally respect is about to play and you run up to them with a
silver or black marker and...well, you know the rest :)

Tonight, whilst going through my vinyl for the first time in a LONG
time, I found:

Mr Fingers - Amnesia - of course I was new to the signing thing then
and had brought a ball point pen instead of a marker and poor old
Larry had to sort of inscribe the cover as the pen wouldn't write -
this would have been roughly 1994-1995 when he played live (DX7, Emax
II and live vocals- I recoreded the gig on DAT and of course, it
didn't work) in the Volcano club on a Thursday night (where the club
scene in Trainspotting was filmed fact fans!)

Orlando Voorn - 1987 DMC MegaMix - signed at his Art School gig back
in 2001 just before I moved over to Amsterdam - he ended the show by
coming out of the DJ booth, dancing like a crazy man and then
scratching in the next track by leaning back into the booth whilst
still dancing - pretty impressive stuff!

Of course the hardest part after making a fool of yourself is getting
the said record home in one piece..or home at all!

Come on you lot, what you got?

No issue with the getting the record home. I was working with another guy

writing I could find was etching in the dead wax bearing the legend
M.I.D. 1 or something similar. The A-side was a pretty nice techno

sounds like vocals in Arabic. Anybody know anything about this?

Styrax are releasing an old Kenny Larkin/Pod thing - Anapest along
with G-Man Quo Vadis - I always wonder how these guys (Styrax stay
in business) as they only do 300 copies of a lot of their releases so
I don't even know how they cover costs never mind licensing the tracks

There's some more Detroit goodies been repressed on the rather
excellent Global Communications Out Of The Box compilation and

Also, why do you call it tech-house? This is purist techno, I don't
