You could create your custom dropdown menu by using one single project form and
some code.
The dropdown will display this form. No overhead. Have a look at the type ahead
component I published a while ago, you could adapt the concept I use there to
build your own dropdown menu.

The thing I most worry about is the performance overhead of subforms.
I would suspect a subform is "heavier" than a simple field or button for
