Hi,

In QS_Toolbox, I've implemented the Vincent solution.
You can view inside the component the diagram and also export it as picture.

Have a look here: association-qualisoft.eu

Chip,
You should have two licences selected in the Licences tab:
- 4D Developer Porofessional
- 4D Unlimited Desktop

My experience is a few years old, but you should be able to do this. The
documentation which comes with the 4D ODBC driver (here’s the link for 4D ODBC
Driver v17: 4D ODBC
DRIVERhttps://doc.4d.com/4Dv17/4D/17/4D-ODBC-Driver.100-3786159.en.html
 https://doc.4d.com/4Dv17/4D/17/4D-ODBC-Driver.100-3786159.en.html>)
describes how to configure the UserDSN or SystemDSN. Take care that you are
using the correct version, 32-bit or 64 bit. Are you doing this on Windows? If
so, make sure you’re using the correct 32 or 64 bit version of ODBC Data Source
Administrator. It might be called Data Sources (ODBC) in Control Panels.

Hi Chip,

As Chuck points out, did you specify the location of Unlimited Desktop?

That is,
Choose DESIGN -> BUILD APPLICATION.
Select the “Application” tab.
Check-mark “Build stand-alone application”.
Click the ellipsis button (ie, “…”) and select 4D Volume Desktop.
Click BUILD.

RE: How to connect to a 4d ODBC server across a network

2019-04-17 Thread Stephen J. Orth via 4D_Tech
We have a similar situation, but it's simply because we don't want to have to
install the ODBC on every Client.

The way I get around this is to separate the SQL query into it's own method,
and have it run on the Server. This way there is only 1 ODBC System DSN.

The method packs the results into an Object (JSON format) and returns the
results back to the Client method, where it is unpacked and displayed to the
user.

Hope that helps!

Best,

Steve

I am accessing (via an SQL query) my 4D database across a network.
The 4d ODBC database is situated on one server and the software I will be
querying the database will be on another server.
Is it possible to create a UserDSN or SystemDSN that can find the server
located across the network??

Not sure how to do his and keen for some advice

Re: New Gmail interface does not render carriage returns as Line breaks in 4D plain text Emails

Hi Dave,

I've seen this too, in v16 and v17. Did anything ever come of this?

Steve

How to connect to a 4d ODBC server across a network

2019-04-17 Thread msherloc via 4D_Tech
I am accessing (via an SQL query) my 4D database across a network.
The 4d ODBC database is situated on one server and the software I will be
querying the database will be on another server.
Is it possible to create a UserDSN or SystemDSN that can find the server
located across the network??

Not sure how to do his and keen for some advice

Re: Printing Structure Diagram (Somewhat O.T.).

2019-04-17 Thread Jack Stewart via 4D_Tech
Your email reminds me that I have a whole lot of legacy,
Macintosh 4D applications software and accompanying manuals
complete with original 3-ring binders which I would like to
sell. I used to do a lot of 4D development but have gotten away
from it in recent years. I stopped purchasing updates in 2003.

This 4D material contains the full gamut of 1990 to 2003 4D
applications ranging from 4D itself to 4D Write, 4D Draw, 4D
whatever :) I own it.

I would like to sell it all if there is a market for it. Some
applications remain unopened and everything is in excellent
condition. The manuals alone contain a wealth of relational
database theory and I have lots of 3rd party 4D books as well.

Just wondering if anyone can advise me if there is any demand
for this material. I would like to see it go to a good use.

Thanks,

Jack

Hi All,

We are in the midst of analyzing a very old 4D application.
We’d like to print/plot/PDF a structure diagram, in all
it’s glory, to hang on the wall. It must represent all
structure elements such as Tables, Fields, Relations, Indexes,
etc…. I have seen these diagrams for other platforms but I
haven’t been successful in extracting such from 4D.
Way back in the day I could print a tiled version of the
structure from the Structure editor window but that print menu
seems to be disabled (at least for me) in current versions of
4D. Ideally I would like to export the database as xml or
JASON and load it into another charting specific application to
manipulate and print. I just need to find the proper
application (or 4D component/methods) that can consume the
xml/JASON and provide the needed diagrams.

An example of what I am hoping for can be found in the top
image of Vanessa Talbot’s 4D blog entry titled, “Detailed
Analysis of Your Database Structure” Here is the link if it
is allowed on the Nug:
Something, clean, clear, and readable.

FYI: We are on 4D v16R5 at the moment. Moving to v17 soon.

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you!!
Kirk

Re: Checking If Methods Are Preemptive Ready

2019-04-17 Thread Dani Beaubien via 4D_Tech
I am pretty sure that the METHOD GET ATTRIBUTES command will also return that
information.

In my Code Analysis component, if you open the “Explorer” window there is the
ability to filter the methods based on the preemptive capable attributes. Super
useful and you can do it live.

Re: Fast way to highlight a listbox entity selection

2019-04-17 Thread Keith Culotta via 4D_Tech
Hi JPR,

Fuzziness is a good description, but things stand in sharper relief today. I
was more focused on the syntax than the mechanics and for no particular reason
started out with collections. Converting the app to an entity selection
approach is turning out to be much easier than expected, and much easier than
converting from an array based approach to a record selection approach would
have been.

The collection listbox that was crashing was also in a subform. I did not
think that was important, but it may have contributed to the failure when
highlighting records. The subform was unnecessary, as was using collections
for this purpose, and abandoning those two approaches has resolved the crashing
and some performance issues.

The 40k example was a stress testing step. Most lists should be very much
smaller, and cueing the user with a visual highlight will be more practical.
Thanks to the way 4D implemented the Highlight Set in the past, highlighting
has been a very useful tool that seemed to have no cost.

Thanks,

Keith - CDI
