CONNECTION BROKEN

Hi All,

I have one 4D V13 client-server application on windows.
Sometime i have a CONNECTION BROKEN error on the client.
The statistics of ping give to me a max time=10ms and not packet lost.

Someone have a suggestions?

Method caller

I work with 4D V13.2 on windows.
I use on error call for trap the errors, and i have a question.
Is possible to know the method that have called the method of error 
management?
Into the method, i write the error in one log file, and i have need to 
know the method that have called the error method management.

I know that thare are V13.6 that is better, but i have some 
installations and i need to test the conversion in one appropriated moment.

However i think to convert at V 14 or V15 directly

Why 13.2? Sooo many bugs.  It's a free upgrade to 13.6 which is very stable.

Have you canceled an indexing run for a datafile?

LOST INDEX

Hi all,

I have a 4d application in V13.2 on windows.
I notice that in the structure database i have lost all the index

Questionary into the mail message

Hi All,

In one 4d application i need to do these things:

1 - With 4D i send an email with an HTML code included with some questions.
2 - The user open the mail with the his mail manager application, 
compile this questions and send the mail answer that contain the 
questionary
3 - In 4D i need to receve this email and take the answers for save the 
answers into the database.


Is possibile to do this on 4D?

I do not know what your process does. - but -
It does sound like there is an issue with memory.
Others have responded with ideas about changing cache settings, I would
follow there suggestions, too.

As I suggested, below, it is possible to create a memory leak - a
situation where 4D (your application) requests memory form 4D/system,
does stuff, finishes but does NOT return all of the requested memory to
4D/System. This is called a memory leak.

On a Mac, Safari and Firefox (windows too?) both have issues like this.
ex: open one of these programs memory usage is say 100 megs
You open 10, or 30, or 50 tabs
close all the tabs
memory usage might be 250 megs

repeat this enough times and your system slows down, or the application
crashes.

for 4D, as I said below, you need to make sure at the end of each
process (as it quits) the following items are cleared/emptied/removed
from memory; this may not be exhaustive, and if not others i'm sure
will chime in:)
(it is often best to clear these items as you finish using them, rather
then waiting until the end)
- sets
- selections
- arrays (locals are supposed to be cleared for you)
- Lists
- hierarchal lists (be sure to clear lowest level to highest)
- named selections
- and turn off Event, and Err call methods

if you have done the cache changes others suggest, and insure that all
of the above items are cleared, I would expect your slow downs to go
away.

I'm not sure, but did you send us a report produced by the Info-Report 
component?
I would recommend that you show us the report at startup and a second one when 
the application slows down. That means you have to set a rather short interval 
in the component.
Better yet, you contact the 4D support and show them these reports.

I use the same application on more than 20 pc that are equal of this 
that give the problems.


The application have used for around one year without problems, i have 
this problems only fron two months.

You are using a very old release of an unsupported product (v13 is no longer 
supported nor updated); I would suggest that you, at the very least, update to 
the final release of v13.6 so that you can take advantage of the final set of 
bugfixes that were applied to that product line. It is very possible that you 
are hitting a bug that is already solved in the final release, for example if 
the issue is related to unique fields that do not have an index, that would 
have been addressed in the final releases of 13.5 and 13.6.
In the next future yes, but i have around 25 same applications that run 
on the same hardware without problems.

Maybe they leave 4D open when the OS does an automatic reboot, perhaps for 
Windows Update...
Or maybe it crashes on exit, you could check the Event Viewer to see if there 
are any crash events.
No, i have the log in my application, and have read that the customer 
close the application without problems.

When restart sometimes have this message.

When the issue happens and it reports Anomalies have been detected, you should 
open the log and look at the errors.
Keep a log of the errors to determine if it is the same errors coming back each 
time or something different.
You may find a clue to the underlying cause by cross checking the anomalies for 
each of the times this issue occurs.

This is usually only seen when the application crashed during a flush.
Maybe your code that logged the successful quit had already executed when 4D 
crashed.
You should check the Event Viewer to see if there are any crash events.

Damaged index, could be related to the crash.

You should update from v13.2 to the final version of 4D v13.6 before attempting 
anything else;
at least update the instance that you are having this repeated issue with...

" The database is damaged, it will opened in maintenance mode "

I open in MCS, repair and restart, someone know if i must do other 
things for solve this periodical issue?


There are not power failures or strange operation that the user do.
The user close the application and some times when reopen have this message.

I have other installations with the same application but no problems in 
the others.


Someone have a suggestions.

Examine the network, and computer memory and drive, and routers, look for any 
errors or failures.
Make sure the OS is compatible with the version of 4D both on server and client

Chip,

The process do always the same operations.
The user open the process, do a series of query and close the process.
There is a counter that show the progression of the work, and after some 
times the count down is slow.


The application run with 4D V13.3 is on client server mode, and is compiled.

It is likely then that one or more cache settings need to be changed.

although there is one more thing that could be a cause of a memory leak
- Objects (not sure which version of 4D you are using). I have not
worked with these yet, but I can see where they could be a possible
memory leak.

Other than that - cache settings and/or cache flushing.

if the flush rate (time between flushes is too long) when the disk cash
*is*  flushed it could take some time, and as I remember this is a
locking action (i.e. it stops other activities until it completes).

Are you*sure*  that it is the query that is slow?
could it be that you are loading progressively more data, and so the
process looks like it is slowing down.

i.e.
- you do a query
- get some result records
- do something with them, BUT forget to set a flag that the action has
already occurred.
Later
- you do the same query
- get the original result records + new records
- do something with them, and still forget to set a flag that the
action has already occurred.

repeat, again and again with the results getting larger each time. Then
the action which might have acted on 10 records to start, is now acting
on thousands - appearing - to slow down.

not opened on Internet.

To receive the answers you’ll need 4D to access the submitted
form variables. 4D will receive the posted form using a web
server (4D native, Active4D, NTK). You’ll include a hidden
input value in the form with a UUID as Lee Hinde said. This is
your key to match to a record to store the form input values.

Your “submit” button will post the form to your 4D web server.

You’ll have to learn a little HTML, and you’ll learn how to
read the results of the “post”ed form.

This kind of thing is very easy for 4D types that have been
working with web for a while.

Another way:

I just wrote an email html formed in 4D Write, with a link and
a UUID that when the user clicks on the email link, they go to
a form published by 4D, which they complete and save. The UUID
makes it possible to match the email recipient to record in
the database. The embedded URL in the 4D Write document,
converted to HTML, has “#” in it that I replace string to
the UUID value.

This explains all. What see is typical behavior of an app running on a machine 
with low memory. In the beginning all is well, but after a time the physical 
RAM is full and swapping begins.

i notice that some query after some hours of use become slow, if i close 
and reopen the application are new fast.

Good point Dougie.

But I see that strip thing as just being an enhancement of the keyboard and 
mouse inputs. So, it follows that 4D will give us access to the scope of  the 
“strip”’s feature set as is warranted by its high level environment. Look at 
the trackpad for precedents - we don’t have access to all sorts of multi-touch 
input modes and fancy swiping tricks, but we can associate a click or a drag 
with an active form object such as a button.

Similarly, with the “strip” I imagine we’ll get minimal support simply by 
associating a function key with an object in the “Shortcut” property of a 
button. The paradigm could be extended (again, using the “Shortcut” property) 
to thermometers and dials which could be hidden and used to drive some other 
dynamic aspect of the form.

So I can see ways that 4D could support this without too much platform-specific 
malarkey (which is something they hate, isn’t it). For example, we never got 
those nice Mac-specific toolbar windows which to me would have been utopian. 
However, I see the “strip” as being possibly easier to accommodate being that 
it has existing hardware analogues (like the FN keys).

With a 4GB machine you shouldn't use more than 2GB cache memory for 4D server.

You can consider a bigger/faster computer to help processing speed... often 
this is the easiest to increase performance.

If you watch the server processes when there is a slowdown or when it starts to 
get slower, is the CPU, network, or disk higher than normal?

A lot of 4D server performance can be controlled in the way that 4D code is 
written. Try to figure out what the client is doing with the server is slow. 
The watch pane can tell you a lot about the code that is executing when you are 
seeing slowness.

There are a lot of things that can cause slow performance... Once you figure 
out what code is causing the slowness see if you can optimize it for server.

How big is data file? How much memory on the machine? How much assigned to 4D? 
Is there anything else on the server? You should be running 13.6 not 13.3.

to detect the IP address or user name of the client environment connected to 
the Terminal environment over a remote desktop connection through 4D ran on the 
Terminal environment and not on the client environment?

You can do this using LEP:

You can then create a method to parse the text for the Client IP.

For a proper recommendation we would need to know more details, such as:

* How big is the data file?

Both. The application work in sigle, or in client server mode


You already said that your machine is limited to 4GB of installed RAM, which 
means you are severely limited by hardware...

I can put adjuntive ram

However, if (for example) your data file is less than 1GB and your indexes even 
smaller than you have plenty of physical RAM. It all comes down to the details.




As a blanket recommendation, do not exceed 50% of installed RAM when setting 
your maximum cache value.

4D server 32 can use maximum 2Gb (~2000Mb) in these 4. You have to balance that between cache 
and "the rest of 4D" (executing methods, creating processes, etc.). I usually give

I believe the max RAM that 4D can access is 4GB — the max byte value of an 
UNSIGNED longint. The max you can set the cache to is 2,384MB on macOS with

Server will not let you go any higher. It does this so that it will have 
1,616MB for “the rest”. It will dynamically use that for what it needs.

Next you have to consider how much memory the operating system needs. If all

I would think a bare minimum would be 1GB. 2GB just for the OS should be more 
than enough.

If I have a machine with 4GB+ of memory and I’m running 32bit 4D Server I’d set 
the 4D data cache to 2,300MB if there are less than 20 users and an average of 
5 processes per user. The remaining 1,700MB will be used up by 4D Server for 
“the rest” and by the operating system.

Run the system configured like this for some time and monitor memory allocation 
on the machine with Activity Monitor on macOS or Task Manager on Windows. If 
you see there is a lot of “Swap used” on macOS then you are maxing out on RAM. 
(I can’t remember the name of the option on Windows to indicate you are paging 
out memory.) Better to reduce the 4D data cache by 250MB or so and then see how 
that works. It is called fine tuning of memory usage.


4d server 64 can use much more ram (2^64), but still you are limited to 4Gb on that 
machine. I suppose that 2500-3000 reserved for cache will be enough for "the 
rest" and the system to breathe. Note: I have a very little experience of 64bit 
servers still, so please someone correct me if I'm wrong…

On a 64bit machine with 4GB of memory I’d use the same settings. I’d probably 
not even use 64bit 4D Server on a machine with 4GB of memory. Don’t see much 
point to it. Max cache is still going to be around 2,300MB because you’ll still 
need the remaining 1,700MB for 4D Server “the rest” and the operating system to 
share.

In my opinion you don’t need 64bit 4D Server unless you have at least 8GB on 
the machine. With an 8GB machine you can easily set the 4D data cache to 
5,000MB.

When i do an upgrade, i copy into the folder: server database these two
file: .4dc and .4dindy, and copy the folder Upgrade4Dclient.

For do an client's upgrade i must to delete even some settings, options or
folders?

IT_MyTCPAddr command, return the ip number of the local pc, but i need to know 
the ip number or the username of the pc that enter with remote desktop.
When the 4D client run in the user created on the windows server, this command 
give the ip of the server machine, not the ip of the pc that enter using remote 
desktop

Client on two lan card

Going in designer environment 4D crash

This is not always, i delete the settings of 4D in AppData\Roaming\4D 
but the issue remain.

Primary key in a existant database

I have done a conversion from V13 to V15 but for one table the field 
that was indicated like a primary key contain a duplicate values, so i 
must create another
field unique, indexed, give a different values at this field and put 
this field like a primary key.

I am continuing to create a full featured Audit trail system using 4D Backup 
Journal file. It is coming along nicely with a viewer telling me it’s progress, 
and running in a Preemptive Process.

Without having to create huge amounts of data to import I am not going to get 
the JSON file that is generated to be so large that it needs to close one off 
and start another. I have looked in the manual and all it says is:

By default, the maximum size of the exported JSON file is 10 MB. When this size 
is reached, the file is closed and a new file is created.

Does anyone know how it names the extra files that it creates?

In another ‘life’ we had several thousand users on Remote Desktop to 4D client. 
The problem usually was that their connection to the client server was broken 
(internet problems). They really liked that they could reconnect and their was 
their work. Therefore we didn’t worry about this, it was a good feature.

Of course there is the issue of them disconnected with no intention of coming 
back on any time soon. For this we had code that was in the code of our 
application. It watched constantly for inactivity. For each workstation there 
could be a different setting. After ‘x’ time it would hide all windows, and 
bring up the login screen. We then also had code that at a certain time of the 
night we would provide a count down to all signed in users (including those 
mentioned above) that would tell them the server was closing connection. We 
would then use the Quit 4D command to shut the client connection down.

Not sure if this helps you - it is just what we did.

subtile than in V13.

the plugin returns a regular picture (you have the choice between PNG and SVG) 
so you should be able to use regular picture commands,

I would not do this unless there is no other solution for the problem I want to 
solve.

Better solutions:

- Pre-declare a number of arrays (Array text(MyArray_001 etc.) and use them by get 
pointer (Get pointer ("MyArray_"+string($lCounter))
- On interface level you can address most elements without declaring a process 
variable, e.g. Listbox columns.

4D crash

Hi All,

I use 4D V13 an V15 on windows 8.1 pro with Kaspersky or Avira .

More times when i go in designer mode 4D crash.
I try more times and finally i go in designer mode.
Sometimes i go in roaming folder and delete the preference and the 
application folder, but for me there are another reason for thi issue.

Someone have the same problem?

Listbox question

Ferdinando,

There was an issue with memory leak in some versions that exhibit similar 
behaviour.  I know the issue existed in v16 (fixed in one of the NB), returned 
in 16r3 and 16r4, and it's been since fixed in 16r4 build 215501, but I don't 
know if it effected any v15 releases too.

To verify if this is your issue, open a method with about 100 lines of code or 
more, scroll down to the bottom of the method (this is important to trigger the 
leak), open your task manager and look at the amount of memory 4D is taking.  
If you notice the memory grow every second, you have a version with this leak.

Slow characters visualization

Hi all,

I use 4D V15.5 on windows.
Sometimes when i write a method the editor is not fast responsive, in 
fact i can see the character digited only after one second.


Someone know the reason, and how i can solve?

Is not a tables's problems in my opinion, because the same database in 
V13 not give this type of problems.

Slow characters visualization

I All,

I notice that the slow in characters visualization, is always, even if the 
method have 10 rows.
When i write into one method the cpu consuming of 4D V15.5 is around 12/15%, 
like if 4D do a big work in interpretation of a code that i write into a method.
This only on 4D V15.5 in other version of 4D all is normal.

Only i have this issue?

In fact i have noticed that in V13 the same database have not a problems.
I have this problems even with only one method opened in editor

Assign multidimensional array

I need to copy a multidimensional array ($A) into another of the same 
dimension ($B).
Is necessary do a cicle and assign every single position or is possible 
to do other?

I am fairly certain, regardless of the answers to the above, http requests

Double 4D istances

Hi All,

I'm using two instances of 4D V15.4 on Windows 8.1.
Things used to be like this because i need to work simultaneously with 
two clients.
I used 4D copies many times but suddenly without changing anything going 
to DESIGN ENVIRONMENT makes 4D crash.

It gives back two windows errors wich names are: "APPCRASH" (for the first
dialog widow) and "BEX" (for the second dialog window). I used this two 
instances even with v13 but i didn't get errors like this it just works 
fine.
Can anyone tell me how to solve this. I think is an exceed of stack 
memory but how can i manage to solve it?

The issue occours when 4D go in the design environment, and there are a 
lot of methods opened.

Sometimes i have a Stack error window, when 4D goes in design environment.
If the methods are closed i don't have errors when i go in design 
envirnoment.


Someone know a solution?

I already try with REDRAW WINDOW but noto work the same.

Using Plain form window the records selection is upgraded, but i must to 
use MAXIMIZE WINDOW command, because the option Plain form window cause 
a movement of the principal windows that is behind like you can see.

of records in the output form is not displayed correctly.

Do you have any other code executing here?

I open the window for do a queries, when I close the window, the
list of records are the same and are not upgraded. If i click on
another button upper the form windows, i can see the new selection
of records.

Hi All,

I work 4D V16 on windows.
Using this code in one button of output form for doing a queries:
$Win:=Open form window("form";Palette form window;Horizontally 
centered;Vertically centered;*)

DIALOG("form")
CLOSE WINDOW
i notice that the selection of the records are not upgraded in the 
output form.


If use the option Plain form window i not have the same issue.
$Win:=Open form window("form";Plain form window;Horizontally 
centered;Vertically centered;*)

DIALOG("form")
CLOSE WINDOW

Someone know the reason?
