Stephen, one use I have is to monitor an internal server that is not a web
server and not available outside this lan. I guess it would have to at least
ping the server and alert me if this headless machine goes dark.

I've been using Alertra for several years now. It monitors web servers
which works for me because the only 4D installs I need to worry about have
webservers plus a few others I watch. You can adjust the ping rate from a
few seconds to - well I don't actually recall how long you can wait - a
NAGIOS works very well, all our servers are monitored by NAGIOS. And that by
simply monitoring the http(s) ports.
