[57north-discuss] Rootable touchscreen e-reader - £29 delivered
Not the most powerful machine in the world, but looks like it could be a nice platform to hack on. Or I suppose you could use it (in theory) for reading books... http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/id/NOOK_Simple_Touch/9781400699032 Specs here: http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch C. ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss

I bought one of these for my Mother when they were reduced to £19, and I still feel I was overcharged. It's quite slow, the interface is clunky (although you could probably flash it with something else) and, most importantly, there's no Reset button and the case is moulded shut. This means that I was forced to return mine through the post to Germany *twice* because bad files from the Nook store caused it to lock up. If you're going to spend £29, go onto eBay and get a used Kindle 3rd generation, with the keyboard. You can hack those to use them as a (slow) free 3G dongle. :-) (Sorry for butting in. I'm the guy who wanted to attend, but the three days you're open are the three days I'm on kidney dialysis...) If they are that much of a nightmare I won't bother. If you're going to spend £29, go onto eBay and get a used Kindle 3rd generation, with the keyboard. You can hack those to use them as a (slow) free 3G dongle. :-) I have also been thinking of getting a good kindle again, it will go on my list. (Sorry for butting in. I'm the guy who wanted to attend, but the three days you're open are the three days I'm on kidney dialysis...) We are of course open sporadically everyday. While Tuesday's,Thursday's and Saturday's we are planning on being open. Any time you can make it in you should ask the list or on irc. Most of the time there is someone waiting for someone else to hack with. -- Tom | I don't see how we are going to build the dystopian megapoli @adventureloop | we were promised in 80s and early 90s cyberpunk fiction if adventurist.me | you guys keep complaining. :wq ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss

Wow - no reset, really? might grab one anyway for the speedy display, touchscreen and ability to use android. The updated refresh looks amazing [1] Sidenote: anyone that knows me will know how I oh-so love my rooted K3G. The free 3g hack has caused Amazon to cap free use to 50mb/mnth. Prob a bad idea to steal it - it's kind of amazon to provide it free and I would be sad if they stopped it. Re: [57north-discuss] Volunteer to take over doorbot and/or (possibly) hackhub?
Hi Robert, On 2014-07-15 01:42, Robert McWilliam wrote: In my ideal world, now I've made this decision, I'd just quietly start ignoring you all - but I'd rather not just drop the space infrastructure that I've been looking after. Sometimes it can get that way. So, I'm looking for volunteers to take over responsibility for doorbot and, if Iain doesn't want to do it himself, hackhub. Hackhub is a pretty simple python/Flask CRUD webapp so shouldn't be too tricky to pick up for anyone that knows python and/or web development. I had a look at this and it looks well written. Just to share my story I was a computer programmer from the Z80 days when tinkering with the hardware wasn't really doable. Cut 20 or so years and after getting involved in my local hackerspace I was doing all sorts of things I never knew about before. These are some of my blog/photo posts: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+DavidLyon/posts doorbot involves a wider range of tech (but each bit is pretty simple): electronic stuff to control the strike plate, an arduino to interface that to the PC, and then another python/Flask webapp to provide the interface to trigger opening the door from hackhub. The code side of doorbot is at https://github.com/ormiret/doorbot And a sketch of the circuitry plus some explanation of how it works: https://57north.co/wiki/Doorbot I'm happy to go over any of the details with anyone who's willing to take either of these on. Looks pretty good. Globally (I'm told) lots are chasing the Internet-of-Things type solutions. I've been doing a similar thing for the Attiny85 which is smaller and cheaper.
