[57north-discuss] Fake CR2032 batteries

2014-10-23 Thread Tony Travis
Hi,

Every single one of the CR2032 batteries Iain bought from Pound-Land
for the 2U Rackable Opteron 200 servers that I donated to the Space went
flat shortly after I fitted them :-(

That might explain why the motherboards failed to POST...

As you know, I bought ten new 12x13 server motherboards to replace them
before realising the Space can't afford the electricity to run them -
Never mind, I'm donating them to Tom for his research at UoA.

Back to the main topic of my message: I had *NO* idea how widespread
fake CR2032's are on eBay/Amazon never mind PoundShop. I'm looking for
genuine name-brand CR2032 replacements if anyone has recommendations?

Caveat emptor!

  Tony.

I'd probably go with RS. Their batteries come with datasheets of what
their capacity should be:
http://docs-europe.electrocomponents.com/webdocs/0394/0900766b80394067.pdf

RS are usually not the cheapest but for things where authenticity
matters paying a bit more can be worth it for them to worry about the
sourcing.

Hi, Andrea.

Yes, of course, but I had no idea about fake CR2032 batteries either!

I must admit that the Pound-Land batteries seemed to good to be true at
the time and now we know why ;-)

Bye,

  Tony.

Hi, Robert.

I took you advice and ordered 25 from RS.

Thanks,

  Tony.

I think themed Thursdays felt abandoned and have left. There does seem to be a
serious hacking night planned though.

I'll be down to tart up the pillar drill / make it safer.

Had a similar experience with the poundland 9v batteries used at the last
Makeitglo. Not fake per say, but just a very quick voltage drop when you
use them for more than a short length of time. Stay away from these also -
total crap.

Cheers,
Ed

Oh, I have used 10 blank CD's from poundland without any trouble. This probably
depends a lot on the quality of the burner.
