Thanks Rob - it's on my todo list to implement DNS over HTTPS and probably go
via cloudflare for the time being as they support it.

Patches welcome!

I meant to send this yesterday but got distracted and forgot.

We now have a working internet connection in the space :)

The remaining problem was that the router was giving out the converged DNS
servers from the old space connection via DHCP and they weren't actually
reachable from the general internet. I've switched it to google's DNS servers
for now (I could remember their IPs). Bikeshedding on what we *should* be using
can now commence. Until we have consensus on that if you don't want to use
google's DNS: don't trust DHCP for DNS servers when in the space.

The edgerouter and wifi AP are currently on the wall in the corner of the main
room. This gives is wifi and a small number (I think 3 available?) of wired
ports there. Once the rack is actually installed somewhere they'll be moved
there and switch etc. added to give more (and more convenient) wired
connections. No idea when that'll happen - my level of caring about the wired
network puts it below quite a lot of other stuff on the TODO list for me, so
won't be soon unless someone else does it.

good long solid core Cat5/6 patch cables that I will bring in tonight in

It's getting quite late in the day and noone has yet announced that it
is Tuesday, but both this computer and I think it is so there should be
the space open evening today.

Anyone who wants to can come along and have a look at the space and/or
a chat with the members present. If you haven't been in before it's a
good idea to bring a laptop and/or something to work on.

If anyone has any plans for what they'll be doing they can let us know

I think I'll be trying to get some LEDs to light up.

Hi, Hibby.

I'll be in trying to remaster Ubuntu 16.04 on my laptop with "respin":

I used "Remastersys" a lot about ten years ago, so I was pleased to see
it being actively developed again ad "respin". I originally came to this
via "Zen" linux, which supported remastering out of the box:

Sadly, the developer of "Zen Linux" Raymond Medeiros got fed up of it
and at one time he offered me the chance to take over but by then I'd
started using Ubuntu. Since then, Raymond has become Claire and seems to
be much happier now:

I'm intrigued if that could ever be a real pointer... it's definitely
got too many bits to map through any virtual memory system I've come
across, but I'm not sure about things that aren't memory but are
pretending to be: do they use "invalid" virtual addresses anywhere? In a
way that could get that far through the 64bit address space?

As a real address that would be a couple quintillion yottabytes in,
which would need an impressive machine - I make it about another century
of Moore's law to get there.

I suppose you might not be indexing bytes. Indexing atoms on earth that
would only be about a millionth of the way in, so I'll call it plausible
as a pointer to an atom in a planet.

Re: [57north-discuss] [57north-announce] Open evening

2016-05-03 Thread Hibberd, Dave

I shall be shuffling into our weekly omnishambles.

I'll be throwing out the shell, screen and attachments of the old TC1100
(unless anyone wants it) because it is beyond my expert repair sadly and
my box is full of dead laptop

I shall be dropping a C.H.I.P in Kev's box, after programming it with
debian, so he can use it for his nefarious activities.

I shall also be trying to use a tablet as a device to change cisco
configuration for I am some kind of masochist.

I shall be selling sugary sweet treats - the 57N tuck shop where
everything is 50p apart from the Freddos. They're 2 for 50p (or 25p
each).

At the moment, we've got Cans of Irn Bru and Coke, Twixes, Freddos, a
mix of crisps and probably something I've forgotten about. All profits
go towards funding the Space's Accountant and/or preventing us from
going out of business.

Bring your money, fund our survival, kill your teeth.

Hx
