you are right sir, one extra care to be taken for all customer is, the 3
digit code number is printed on credit card. for safety, we have to remember
that number, and better is to erase that number from the credit card. or you
can make dark marking on that number. so, nobody can easily access it.

It is good, Rahul.
Now, the tragedy of the story is as follows.
Firstly, photo credit cards should be issued for all and not only for
blind.
I had suggested this to RBI committee about four years back, along with
the suggestion that a PIN like ATM debit card be also prescribed for
credit cards which the customer should be able to change.

However, said suggestions did not find favor, supposedly due to the fact
no such things are done in western countries for credit cards and so,
Monkeys that we are, would not be able to implement all these things.

I am glad in your case they at least gave photo card.
Secondly, this individual victory would not be translated into general
practice across the banks BY DEFAULT.
Such is the system here that everyone has to wage a lonely crusade to
AVAIL the due rights.

Interestingly enough RBI has issued an advisory making various ombudsman
directives as general directives to banks. But this practice of giving
photo credit cards to VI, if otherwise eligible, would BE so made at a
future date, I am not sure.

Hello all,

This Circular is a result of a 6 months long crusade held between PNB,
and banking ombudsman. Last year I filed a complaint with RBI banking
ombudsman office.
In March 2010 PNB communicated through a letter to me that they will
come out with a policy on the subject matter till 31st may.

Last month PNB communicated through a letter to collect a global
credit card, and requested to close the complaint from BO office.
This credit card is similar to a normal VISA card but an additional
feature is that they have prefixed my passport size photograph on the
card.
The amazing part of the story is that card has been issued to me on
thumb impression.

PNB has provided me with all the banking services, internet banking,
debit card, and now this credit card, but all of the products took
more than a year to be issued as all of the times I had to nock the
dors of reserve bank .

I am relief to know that now PNB has come out with a circular and
fulfilled its commitment to banking ombudsman.

Thanks
Rahul Gambhir

Re: [AI] ownership of vehicles by the visually challenged

2010-06-07 Thread Vamshi G
Dear sir,

I heard there is road tax exemption if four wheelers are purchased by
physically challenged persons. And I've been told there is a G O in this
regard issued by AP state government. But I'm not able to get that
circular.

I've googled for it and found a document containing the details of a court
case in AP won by a physically challenged against the AP state government.
But the conditions in that document are as follows;

1. The person purchasing that car should have a licence in his name. (This
means this is only for mildly disabled persons)

2. The vehicle should be driven exclusively by the buyer.

3. There should be a board on the front side of the car stating that the
vehicle is driven by a physically challenged person.

If you want, I can send the document to your personal mail id.

Hello Vamshi,

When you say the same thing is happening when you are typing
in Word, what do you mean? Do you mean that the font says 12, but when you
write something it looks bigger? If this is the case, then perhaps the zoom
is off.
Go to the view menu and then to zoom. Confirm that it is set to 100%. This
is
just an idea. Hope it helps!

APA sign outside Yahoo headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. Yahoo Inc. has
announced that it will import personal updates from Facebook's social networking
for users. File photo

Yahoo Inc's latest facelift will include a Facebook touchup.

As part of changes rolling out this week, Yahoo will import personal updates
from Facebook's social networking for users who want a bridge between two of
the world's most popular websites. The Facebook link will need to be turned on
by each Yahoo user.

The personal updates, known as a news feed in Facebook's parlance, will be
available throughout Yahoo's website, including its front page and e-mail
service.
Other tools will empower people to automatically let their Facebook friends
know what they are doing and saying on Yahoo services such as its photo-sharing
site, Flickr.

The additional tie-ins follow through on a makeover that Yahoo announced late
last year in an effort to make its website more compelling.

Although Yahoo still commands a worldwide Internet audience of nearly 600
million, people have been hanging around for progressively shorter periods
during
the past few years. One of the reasons is because people increasingly
congregate on Facebook to share photos, video clips and music, discuss current
events
and bond with their families and friends.

Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, California, is betting that more of its visitors
will stay on its website if they can simultaneously monitor what's happening
on Facebook. Keeping people on its site longer would give Yahoo more
opportunities to sell online ads and revive its revenue growth after an
extended slump
that has sapped its earnings power and stock price.

Connecting with Facebook is just the first step in Yahoo's attempt to establish
its website as a social hub.

Later this summer, Yahoo intends to import personal updates posted on Twitter's
short-messaging service. And by the end of the year, Yahoo will begin featuring
widely played Internet games such as Farmville, Mafia Wars and Fishville,
made by Zynga.

The increased emphasis on so-called social media could make Yahoo more
susceptible to the privacy backlashes that have plagued Facebook in recent
years.
Yahoo is trying to ensure people don't inadvertently share any sensitive
information by simplifying its privacy controls and urging visitors to review
their settings.

As part of that process, Yahoo's identify control centre has been renamed
Yahoo Pulse. It had been called Yahoo Profiles since its October 2008 debut.

Windows 7 augments standard power management components such as hard drive spin

APWindows 7 augments standard power management components such as hard drive
spin down and monitor shut-off.

Windows 7, the latest operating system (OS) from the Microsoft stable, can help
businesses save about Rs 1,000 per PC annually on power, a study said on
Sunday.

According to a report by Mindteck's Smart Energy Lab, companies can save about
Rs 1,000 per computer a year on an average through Windows 7 as compared
to older operating systems like Windows XP or Vista.

Energy efficiency is a key factor that companies are concentrating on, and the
research shows that the new OS helps companies to not only save money but
also contributes to the various green initiatives they are taking, Microsoft
India Director (Windows Client) Sumeet Khanna said.

As organisations look at saving on operating expenses and reducing exposure to
fluctuating energy prices, green initiatives are among the top focus areas
in corporate IT roadmaps.

Optimising desktop power management is one of the simplest, yet effective,
ways to reduce power consumption in an enterprise. Increasing energy efficiency
on Windows 7 has been one of the core areas for Microsoft, he said.

The study said that Windows 7 focuses on reducing overall power consumption by
investing in performance optimisation, idle resource utilisation, device
power management and key end-user scenarios.

Cost savings of up to $ 40.44 (84.46 per cent reduction) per client per year,
not including LCD consumption, can be realised by ensuring that desktop PCs
or laptops automatically enter sleep states during working hours, and at the
end of the day, if the user forgets to manually turn off their PC, Mindteck
Global Infrastructure head, Infrastructure, Services and Managed Services,
Andrew J. Hacker said.

Cost savings for businesses range from $ 14,821 (about Rs 7 lakh) at 500 PCs to
a significant $ 296,426 (about Rs 1.4 crore) per year at 10,000 PCs (LCD
not included), he added.

Windows 7 augments standard power management components such as hard drive spin
down and monitor shut-off. IT administrators can also monitor energy consumption
and adjust power settings across their organisations, reducing the amount of
wasted energy.

You have either E72, N86 or N97 in the US market. And the N86 is also
fast disappearing. Many of those new phones are based S60 fifth
edition models. So one should gradually begin to forget third edition
phones. It's like 32 bit windows being replaced by 64 bit.

[AI] Compensation scheme for differently abled

2010-06-07 Thread Gopalakrishnan
Compensation scheme for differently abled

T. Ramakrishnan

CHENNAI: The State government has framed a scheme of payment of compensation to
differently abled persons who become victims of crime.

Called Victim Assistance Fund for Differently Abled Persons, the scheme has
earmarked a sum of Rs.1 lakh for each district. A sum of Rs.5,000 will be given
to the differently abled when they suffer grievous injuries or fall victims of
major crime incidents such as rape and Rs.10,000 to their legal heirs in the
event of murder, according to an order issued by the Welfare of Differently
Abled Persons Department last month.

In addition, an assistance of Rs.200 per day may be paid to meet the
expenditure during the trial of the case subject to a maximum of Rs.2,000 per
victim per case.

Conveyance allowance of Rs.500 and sitting allowance of Rs.300 per sitting will
be paid to advocates who provide free legal service to differently abled
persons. An interpretation allowance of Rs.300 will be paid per sitting to
interpreter or teacher.

District Collectors will administer the fund. Headed by the Collectors, the
district-level committees will comprise Superintendents of Police/City Police
Commissioners and District Differently Abled Welfare Officers.

The committees will meet at least once in a month to consider and decide the
cases of granting relief.

The government's action follows the directions of the Madras High Court in
November 2009 to frame a scheme for providing solatium to differently abled
persons.

The scheme has been modelled on the basis of Victim Assistance Fund for victims
of major crime incidents.

Re: [AI] Moderator: Re: PNB CREDIT CARD FACILITY TO BLIND CUSTOMERS

2010-06-07 Thread Steven Max-Faults

Hello,

I’m not sure if this is what you are talking about. Here in the US,
I know that Bank of America offers a service whereby customers can put their
photo on their credit card for extra security. So, when you use your credit
card to pay for something, they can see whether the photo on the card is you.
However, I think having your photo on your credit card is really unusual. Most
businesses just trust you, or just ask for a photo ID card. Credit cards in the
US also have PINs, but they are only used when borrowing money from the card at
the ATM.

Best,

Steven

It is good, Rahul.
Now, the tragedy of the story is as follows.
Firstly, photo credit cards should be issued for all and not only for blind.
I had suggested this to RBI committee about four years back, along with the
suggestion that a PIN like ATM debit card be also prescribed for credit cards
which the customer should be   able to change.

However, said suggestions did not find favor, supposedly due to the fact no
such things are done in western countries for credit cards and so, Monkeys that
we are, would not be able to implement all these things.
I am glad in your case they at least gave photo card.
Secondly, this individual victory would not be translated into general practice
across the banks BY DEFAULT.
Such is the system here that everyone has to wage  a lonely crusade to AVAIL
the due rights.

Interestingly enough RBI has issued an advisory making various ombudsman
directives as general directives to banks. But this practice of giving photo
credit cards to VI, if otherwise eligible,    would BE so made at a future
date, I am not sure.

Re: [AI] difficulty in subscribing

2010-06-07 Thread Steven Max-Faults

Hello Umar,

I also had the same problem. I filled out the form, and it
took a few days before being subscribed. In my welcome message from the
moderator, there was another set of instructions for subscribing. It says to
send an email to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in, and write “subscribe”
in
the subject line without the quotation marks. If this doesn’t work, I guess your
brother can email Kiran at ki...@uniquestindia.com.
I hope this helps!

Best,

Steven
