[AI] Are you blind? Sorry travelling in Delhi has become more difficult for you.
Dear All If you meet an ordinary blind person on roads in Delhi, and ask How is travelling going? He/she promptly replies it has gone from worse to worst. If you're travelling on foot, you're welcomed by broken roads, big potholes, giant trees and mini shops scattered on footpaths. If you're in Auto and meter is on, you never know how KM you have travelled and via which root? And if you're travelling by bus, you don't come to know which stand has arrived unless yu plead excuse me? So only Mr Shreedharan's Metro is safe mode of transportation. Now despite the presence of huge blind people in workforce, Universities, and schools, why there hasn't been any collective movement on the changed scenario which outrightly ignored the presence of blind population in the capital? Earning is not enough to live dignified life. Suggestions are required from all of you how to go ahead to make Delhi travelable for blind people. Please take out time to render your suggestions. -- Avinash Shahi Programme Executive at Score Foundation To know more,Why not visit our Website: http://www.eyeway.org/ And M.Phil Research Scholar at Centre for The Study of Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Bring Dropbox to your Symbian Device in 5 easy Steps!
Bring Dropbox to your Symbian Device in 5 easy Steps!http://www.fonearena.com/blog/32424/reminder-bring-dropbox-to-your-symbian-device-in-5-easy-steps.html Lately I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the lack of a dedicated * Dropbox* Application for Symbian. Sure it would be nice to have one, as the apps on both, Android and iOS are really well done. but it seems most people don’t know that you can have a much much better way to browse your files on Symbian than the mobile web app. What better than having Dropbox integrated directly into the Filemanager? It’s easy, it’s free (if you have a free Dropbox account) and its very fast to setup! And here’s how its done: *1. *Visit dropdav.com and sign up – you just enter your dropbox credentials and that’s it! This is free if you have a free Dropbox account, but will cost you a monthly fee if you have 50 or 100GB running. In case you are interested how this works, here’s a bit from dropdav’s website: DropDAV is a translator. It seamlessly translates communication between your WebDAV client, over the WebDAV standard, and Dropbox, via the powerful Dropbox API. Note: Dropbox imposes a file upload limit of 300 MB. Bigger files must be uploaded using the Dropbox Application. *2.* Grab your Symbian Phone (this even works with older ones!) and open the built-in file manager http://www.fonearena.com/blog/32424/reminder-bring-dropbox-to-your-symbian-device-in-5-easy-steps.html/scr01-4 *3.* Hit options – map new drive http://www.fonearena.com/blog/32424/reminder-bring-dropbox-to-your-symbian-device-in-5-easy-steps.html/scr02-7 *4.* In the following screen enter as follows: *Name:* anything you like * Address: *https://dav.dropdav.com * Access Point:* choose your prefered setting * Username:* your dropbox username * Password:* your dropbox password http://www.fonearena.com/blog/32424/reminder-bring-dropbox-to-your-symbian-device-in-5-easy-steps.html/scr03-4 *5.* Done! Your dropbox access is now setup and should look like this! http://www.fonearena.com/blog/32424/reminder-bring-dropbox-to-your-symbian-device-in-5-easy-steps.html/scr04-5 You can now enter Dropbox, hit options and connect. your content will now be shown and you can start using the content, f.e. downloading it via “copy into folder” http://www.fonearena.com/blog/32424/reminder-bring-dropbox-to-your-symbian-device-in-5-easy-steps.html/scr07-6 Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Regards, The BGFI team A brief about Lohagad from Wikipedia Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lohagad Lohagad (literally Iron fort in Marathi) is one of the many hill forts of Chatrapati Shivaji. It is situated 52km from Pune in western India. Lohagad is at an elevation of 3,450 feet (1,052 m). It divides the basins of the Indrayani and Pavna and is situated on a side range of the Sahyadris. The Visapur fort is located on its eastern side. The four large gates of Lohagad are still in good condition and reasonably intact. Historical records show that in the later Peshwa period, Nana Phadnavis (1742-1800 AD) built several structures in the fort such as a big tank and a step-well (bawali). On the west side, there is a long and narrow wall-like fortified spur called Vinchukata (Marathi for Scorpion's tail; see picture) because of its shape. Lohagad has a long history with several dynasties occupying it at different periods of time: Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizamshahis, Mughals and Marathas. Shivaji captured it in 1648 CE, but he was forced to surrender it to the Mughals in 1665 CE by the Treaty of Purandar. Shivaji recaptured the fort in 1670 CE and used it for keeping his treasury. This fort was used to keep the loot from Surat. Later in Peshwa time Nana Phadanwis used this fort for living for sometime. The fort has been declared as a protected moument by the government. Re: [AI] some time unable to scan
hello, this mostly happens if you are using the printer all-in-one with multiple functionalities such as, scanner, printer or copier. if any of your print jobs are queued for printing, deleting or clearing them first will solve your problem else turning off the printer and then turning off the switch of power source and then turning on again might solve this problem. if you just would like to scan and read the short document quickly, use the option of setting your scanner to scan the document with fine reader by default. to do this go to my computer and in this location, you will find the shortcut for your printer with the name of your printer. press apllication key on this shortcut and choose the first option scan and hit enter. here one dialog box will open for your scan preferences. follow the prompts and while you are in the scanner program source window, choose the option scan with abby fine reader and check the checkbox next to it which says use this action each time and apply the changes. this will enable you to quickly scan your pages with fine reader. there might be other way out for your solution but this is how i solved the same problem faced by you. thanks, On 7/30/13, Mohib Anwar Rafel mohibra...@gmail.com wrote: Hi friends I m using HP scanner G3110. [AI] The case for switching to the Mac
Hello everyone, I just gone through this article and I feel it is interesting and this made me to think of switching over either. So I do hope this could interest some of you here. The case for switching to the Mac 07/29/2012 By Christopher O'Meally For blind users, the choice between a mac or a pc can be a daunting one. Trying to decide what computer would best fit the needs of the user can be a challenge in some situations, so This article will explain why the Mack could be a viable solution and what to look at when making this choice. Operating Systems. The mac's operating system is quite different from Windows, but easy to learn. Let's take a look at some of its features. The finder. When logging in, the desktop is the first window that appears. Unlike Windows, the Mac's desktop does not contain much; most of the shortcuts and files are located elsewhere. In addition, the computer's hard drive and devices that are connected will appear in this window. Digging deeper in to the finder, the user folder is shown first. The main user directory contains documents, downloads, music, movies, pictures, and frequently used folders specific to the user logged on at the time. . The finder is composed of three main windows, with a tool bar and 3 buttons at the top. The tool bar contains navigation buttons and these help control navigation in the finder. Next is the side bar. This is used to quickly switch between the most popular folders on the computer. By default, they will be the folders mentioned in the user folder, as well as any network locations and external devices. Things can be added to the sidebar, but beware that doing this can make it a bit cluttered. Next is the vertical splitter. This just moves the file group left or right depending on what the slider is set to. Note: this is strictly a visual thing; it doesn't make a difference when listening with a screen reader,. Next is the file group. Once a folder is selected in the sidebar, enter the file group to browse these files. Most, if not all finder windows will be laid out this way. This is because if there are many elements on the screen, it is not necessary to navigate through all of one group to get to another. This eliminates the need for tabbing and groping around crowded and complicated dialog boxes and interfaces. Selecting a file brings up the quick look window. If the file is large, the size will be displayed. If the file is video or audio, it will start playing. That comes in handy when browsing unnamed tracks, so it is not necessary to open a new program just to sample them. In windows, the equivalent is windows explorer. Once logged in, as on the Mac, the desktop is the starting location, which in most cases is a bit more cluttered than the mac's. Most program shortcuts and folders will be put here. Most programs will place icons on the desktop by default, but this setting can be changed in setup. But all in all, it serves the same purpose. Unlike with the Mac, there is no quick look option when viewing files. The properties window in the applications context menu gives a bit of feedback on the file, but quick look gives faster feedback when it's really needed. A useful feature of OS 10 is the dock. Any IPhone users will know what that feature is. It is a place at the bottom of the screen to store the most used applications and folders, so navigation to them is possible, no matter where the user is located in the operating system. In windows, a fast way to get to applications is the start menu. The start menu will show the programs used most frequently, as well as letting users choose the most recent files opened in a particular program. A notable feature of the Mac is spotlight. Searching by file type, name, and location are some of its basic features. Locations can be added and removed, and external drives as well as network shares can be included or excluded in the indexing preferences. This can be done by opening spotlight with command space, then command comma to open preferences. The search bar in windows can also be customized to include or exclude file locations and types. This can be done by typing indexing options in the search bar, or navigating to start, then control panel, and typing indexing options in the search box. The menu bar in OS 10 is a way of browsing most options in the system, and the application that is currently open. First is the apple menu, where the user can view their system information, perform software updates, get to the app store, force quit applications, and shut down the computer. the application menu, which changes names depending on the application one has open, will always be there. The file, edit, and view menus normally stay in the menu bar, unless the application does not include them, then the menu disappears. But if an application requires a specific menu, it will appear as windows change. The second layer of the menu bar, or the menu extras, includes

Dear AmiyoDa As Harish Suggested, it would be best that you could join access-India mobile mailing list. There you would be able to get many tips and tricks to get the most on your phone and also advice on trouble shooting. I will put in some of my thoughts below: There is no harm in writing to Nokia about continuing with C5. How ever, they have left the complete platform of Symbian Series 60 phones. This makes more difficult to gat a full batch of a model out in market. They would create at least few million phones of one model which has support, distribution and all different issues attached to it. Such a majour decision to come out with one more Symbian series 60 phone would be a very big decision and may not be taken in India and we may need to go to Finland for it. Organisations such as RNIB etc. are already in touch with them but for an issue that they should make their windows phones accessible. Most of VI in Europe and north America have shifted to IPone thus there is not so much pressure from those countries for keypad phone such as C5. For few years to come we will continue to get second hand phones of C5 or E5. These would work well for now and may also be cheeper option. Android phones are doing quite good now. It iscomparitively more time taking to dial or typeon touch screen than on keypad. How ever, rest of functions are more accessible and they will get better in time to come. Off an don we will keep getting some android phones with keypad also. Samsung chat was one of such models. Micromax too had a model like that. They areboth, with toch screen and keypad. There are some good keypadblackberry phones. I do not expect enhancements such as Indian languages or goodaccessible navigationor book playback coming on it though. Most of our future research and development is concentrated on android platform and it is for following direction: Getting a numeric keypad phone Simple to use interface on touch screen Bluetooth keypad and set of applications that can give you easy to use experience. It is not a bad idea to start playing with touch screens as this reality is not going to be reversed and we will always have better options on touch screen based deices. Touch screen devices also have good voice recognition facility. Thus we may be able to make some real use of voice commands instead of keyboard in recent future. Example, I have switched to voice command on android phone to set an alarm. I just have to say se talarm for 5:30 AM and it does so without any problem. Amiyo Many blind persons have already moved out of Symbian / Nokia phones. We have made the Mobile Accessibility list especially catering to this requirement. You don't need to get worked up on it. However, do take extra care of your existing Symbian phones so the transition fobia is pushed forward and you get more accessible device then. Garnering support for C5 is not a bad idea at all. However, the new commers to mobile phone would be more benefited with the newer OS as they don't have to unlearn something. [AI] Fwd: Giving a voice to persons with disabilities in disaster situations
-- Forwarded message -- From: UN Disaster Survey ena...@un.org Date: Tue, 30 Jul 2013 17:21:10 -0400 Subject: Giving a voice to persons with disabilities in disaster situations To: eren...@gmail.com UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) 2013 Survey on Living with Disabilities and Disasters http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XJFJD96 THIS SURVEY IS INTENDED FOR PERSONS LIVING WITH DISABILITIES On 13 October, the UN International Day for Disaster Reduction will focus on the issues surrounding some one billion of the world's people who live with disabilities and disaster risks. These persons, by-and-large, still have no significant representation in the planning and decision-making processes to reduce these risks or build resilience. The International Day intends to switch on and amplify the conversation that must take place on the needs of persons with disabilities in potential disaster scenarios. Given the lack of data on disability issues generally, The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) is conducting this survey to ascertain the needs of persons living with disabilities and disasters. The International Day will further invite persons living with disabilities as well as society at large to get involved by expressing concerns, needs and recommendations on the International Day web page that can enhance implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) – the global disaster risk reduction plan that was adopted in 2005 for 10 years. The HFA explains, describes and details what is required from all different sectors and actors to reduce disaster losses. It was developed and agreed on with governments, international agencies, disaster experts and many others. The HFA outlines five priorities for action, and offers guiding principles and practical means for achieving disaster resilience. Its goal is to substantially reduce disaster losses by 2015 by building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters. In 2015 the HFA will complete its 10-year term. Findings from the survey and other information gathered during the observation of IDDR 13 will be used to influence the remaining two years of the Framework and as well as the post HFA consultations which began in March 2012. The goal is a post 2015 Framework that is more disability inclusive. [AI] Plagiarism of Content from BarrierBreak website in an email on bringing cost of labling solution to one-third dated 30th July, 2013
Dear Mr. Minocha Access India Admin, In the email sent on 30th July by Mr. Minocha, I would like to point out that the content of the mailer has been copied from a Case study on BarrierBreak website at http://barrierbreak.com/resources/label-organize-and-identify-your-belongings-an-independent-living-solution/ Our website states that “Independent living has always been a matter of concern for a person with disability. None of us would like to be dependent on others for our basic needs and requirements. However, due to limiting conditions many of them have to be dependent on their friends or family or colleagues for various things which may often result into frustration, procrastination etc. We at BarrierBreak have perceived that every person’s needs are different from those of the others and the use of right assistive technology can easily ensure independent living to a person with disability. The email states that “Independent living has always been a matter of concern for a person with failing sight. None of us would like to be dependent on others for our basic needs and requirements. However, due to limiting conditions many of them have to be dependent on their friends or family or colleagues for various things which may often result into frustration, procrastination etc. every persons needs are different from those of the others and the use of right assistive technology can easily ensure independent living to us.” The only thing they they have changed is replacing “persons with disability” to “person with failing sight”, The email goes on to state “Solution Impact: Saksham trust introduces you to thesonic labler, a digital voice labeler device which helps people identify and organize their things by recording voice messages on labels pasted upon them. About sonic labeller The sonic labler Digital Voice Labeler is perfect for anyone who requires a fast and easy way to label virtually anything. Simply attach a sonic labler to the object, press the sonic labler pen to the label, then record a descriptive voice tag. Then the next time you touch the sonic labler pen to that label it will read aloud the voice tag associated with it . The sonic labler can be used to label literally hundreds of everyday household items including CD collections, groceries (including freezer items), medicines and clothing” This also has been copied from our website with only changing the Name of “BarrierBreak” to “Saksham Trust” and “Touch Memo” to “Sonic Labeller” We will request the sender and Saksham Trust from whom the mail has been sent to refrain from violating copyright laws and take down this content and all such content where they have violated the copyright laws. Access India is a list to create awareness and though BarrierBreak is a company and NOT an NGO we yet do not misuse the list and avoid doing product pitches. We pride ourselves in marketing with a difference wherein we have always talked about independence and now pushing for user voice which is where the list members would see case studies and users speaking about independence. Our teams at BarrierBreak take a lot of effort, time and money to ensure that the content is effective and we would not like to see our efforts misused. Mr. Minocha and Saksham Trust are requested to inform us of the actions taken on their part to ensure that such blatant misuse of content is not committed again.
