[AI] The Miss-India blind princes award goes to Simran Chawla!

2017-03-08 Thread avinash shahi
The contestants were judged on their talents and intellect
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/mumbai/beauty-pageant-for-visually-blind-celebrated-on-womens-day/article17430632.ece
Mumbai: Participants at a beauty pageant for visually-challenged
girls, Princess India 2016-17, celebrated the International Women’s
Day in Andheri on
Wednesday with celebrities John Abraham, Subhash Ghai, Javed Ali, and
Bhagyashree, among others.

As many as 16 contestants participated in the event, and New
Delhi-based 21-year-old Simran Chawla was crowned as the winner by Mr.
Abraham. Ms. Chawla
is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in science with an honours
in computer science. Jubilant after her victory, she describes
experience as a “dream
come true.”

“This is the best thing that God have given me,” Ms. Chawla added. Her
mother, she says, is like her mirror, who describes each and every
thing to her
in detail.

Among the other winners were Surabhi Mudgal from Hyderabad (first
runner-up) and Amrya Dastur from Punjab (second runner-up). There were
various other
categories at the event, like the best smile, and the best achiever.

The contestants were judged on their talents and intellect. They also
walked the ramp at the contest.

The participants were shortlisted from across India through an
extensive two-stage selection procedure — at their respective States
and in Mumbai.

Samir Mansuri, chairman, Blinds Dream, and organiser of the contest,
said, “I am the blind too, and I understand the feelings of those who
are blind. I
believe in fulfilling the dreams of the visually challenged people.”

Re: [AI] maths

2017-03-08 Thread George Abraham
Anjena,

A few people on this group have responded to your appeal. You might like to
consider making a smaller group of the people who have done Maths/Science
and start asking /sharing specific issues your son is facing pertaining to
the said subjects. This could be a very useful collaboration and dialogue
you could have.

Hi,

1. Use an Excel sheet like a Taylor frame.
2. As for equations yes they are a challenge. I used to do them in a text
editor
using linear notation. Go term by term.
3. What kind of calculations are we talking about?
4. Ensure your son practices independently.

2017-03-08 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi,

1. Use an Excel sheet like a Taylor frame.
2. As for equations yes they are a challenge. I used to do them in a text editor
using linear notation. Go term by term.
3. What kind of calculations are we talking about?
4. Ensure your son practices independently.

[AI] Maths

2017-03-08 Thread Shakul Raj Sonker
Hey,
I'm Shakul Raj Sonker and currently in second year of my under
graduation. I'm pursuing my studies in mathematics and I think I'll be
able to help.
First of all We don't have material for maths and sciences in
accessible format for visually impaired students.
You can do the following things to make the material accessible to you:
1. Record the books.
2. Type the notes/books in Latec and use the text file.
For calculation and stuff you'll have to be more accurate.
And also CBSE doesn't allow calculators for anyone in maths exams, the
question paper will have basic calculation which is very easy to do.
Please let me know if you want to know anything else.
Thanks and Regards.

Hi

My son cleared 12th CBSE last year with Maths. CBSE does not allow use of
calculator but Log book is allowed. Computer has function of Insert

Anything specific you can ask... maybe my son can help.

HC upholds FTII's denial of admission to colour blind candidate

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday upheld the decision of Film and
Television Institute of India (FTII) not to grant a colour blind candidate
 admission
to the film editing course.

A bench of Justice Shantanu Kemkar and Justice Prakash Naik gave their
verdict on a petition by Patna based Ashutosh Kumar who was short listed
for the post graduate diploma course in film editing. During medical
examination he was found to be colour blind
 and his admission
was declined in view of FTII Rules which state that colour blind candidates
are not entitled to get admission in various courses including film editing.

Kumar's advocate Kartikeya Bahadur argued that colour blindness is neither
a blindness with the meaning of Persons with Disabilities Act and as such
the denial on the basis of colour blindness is illegal. The judges took
note that FTII has set up an admission committee of experts from various
fields to review the admission criteria.

The bench said when an expert body has fixed eligibility criteria and
carved out six courses in which colour blind candidates are not found
suitable, the action of FTII denying admission cannot be said to be illegal
or arbitrary. "Keeping in mind the aforesaid, we are of the view that the
petitioner being a candidate suffering from disability of colour blindness,
he cannot claim admission in the course in question, in which according to
FTII Rules framed by expert body, he cannot be allowed,'' it added. The
judges also noted that in the absence of any mala fide or arbitrariness
alleged by Kumar against FTII there is no need for the court to interfere.

Subject: Re: [AI] Data about employment, education and political representation
of PWD

The state-vise diversified data on sought levels are not available.
It requires a very planned digging at the states level. The Census 2011
however could hint official figures on literacy and education. HRD
Ministry also did a survey on all India higher education in 14-15 and
I did an op-ed based on the data for the Hindustan Times. You could
read the piece
http://www.hindustantimes.com/analysis/universities-do-little-to-enable-the-disabled/story-0ivq04mDi5onH7pHF1JjWP.html
and find the document on the ministry's website. On employment at the
Centre, You could refer to a recent news item appeared in the
Business Standard
http://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/over-13-000-divyangs-given-govt-jobs-mos-pmo-117020701261_1.html
where Mr Jitender Singh tabled some data related to disabled
workforce in the Central government departments. The political
representation of people with disabilities is an under-researched
area, and I can't point to any credible source/resource to fall upon.
The on and off news items about the disabled candidates contesting
elections at various stages hardly resonate once election results are
announced. We however have some positive examples from the past such
as the late Sadhan Gupta.

Re: [AI] Challenge regarding A/C openning!

2017-03-08 Thread Zoher Kheriwala
Dear Jorge,
According to IBA circular for Banking facilities for blind dated 18 11
2008, which provides procedural instruction regarding the opening of
account of blind person.
Under section (I) point 3, All Banks must provide the same facilities
to a visually impaired customer/prospective customer as it would to
any other customer. But at the same time the customers should be made
aware of the risk involved in some of these facilities which may be
higher than that for a normal customer.
Refer section (ii) point 5, which reads,
The Officer / Manager of the branch should read out the rules of
business and other terms and conditions in the presence of a witness,
if required by the customer.

If banks follow above rules then they have to take that undertaking
that the rules are read to the blind customer and they will take your
signature to prove that the rules have been read out to him.

Yes we can take objection on the word “I understood” as their duty is
to read the terms and risk factors and not making us understanding it,
as we are capable of understanding for our self.
So I don’t feel anything wrong to take our signature as it is their
part of duty, as far as they do not refuse us for any facilities.

Re: [AI] Challenge regarding A/C openning!

2017-03-08 Thread Amar Jain
So long as the undertaking is restricted to reading out the terms and
conditions, it would have been fine. But in the absence of standard
prescription, legal heads have applied their brains differently. Write to:

shikha.sha...@axisbank.com

Lets see if management understands!

That's not surprising. What is more annoying that the activist of your
stature who has done immense work for the sector to avail banking
services specially through your Eyeway Helpdesk had to undergo such
humiliation. I am again and again requesting Access India community do
tweet and FB to FM, PM, Finance Sec and RBI Governor along with other
publick sector banks officials in addition to tto honchos of the
private banks. As a researcher I'm doing my best to bring the issues
to the fore what is now required please help us to generate a
sustained campaign on all stages. I did an op-ed on the same issue for
The Hindu, and now did a letter in India's top-most Journal EPW which
was patronized by the RBI in its early days. If each one of us share
it on FB and tweet, this will make a huge difference.
