Re: [AI] Documents

2018-06-17 Thread Santosh Singh
Hi Vedika,

Online disability certificate is a new computerised disability certificate
started couple of years back. This online certificate has all your details
printed and whatever percentage is decided by the software. The doctor just
need to enter your disability details on
https://sadm.maharashtra.gov.in/sadm/en/enHome.gov
.This type of onlime certificate is available in all the district level
hospital. Previously the old certificates had the disability details and
percentage mentioned manually by examining doctor. The old certificates
are still valid but it's better we opt for new online certificate by
getting ourselves re-examined by civil surgeon. unoffically some people say
that your Aadhaar number is linked with the online certificate. Once you
get an online certificate in one state you can not get a new online
certificate from other state inindia as state govt share the details
with central govt and they have a mechanism in place to check for multiple
online certificates for same person.i advise you to apply for online
certificate as many govt organisation reject your disability certificate at
time of document verification. I have personally witnessed this happening
with one railway exam candidate. He was asked to get himself re-examined by
the civil surgeon and submit the disability certificate in latest format.

Unique disability ID or Swawlamban card is a new initiative by Ministry of
Social Justice and Empowerment, New Delhi which can be generated by
applying online at http://www.swavlambancard.gov.in/

After applying you will get a credit card size Unique disability card which
is equivalent to your computerised online certificate and also valid across
all over India. In future disability certificate is going to be phased out
and unique disability card will be used for availing all disability
benefits.
NOTE: If you have the old manual type certificate then your application for
unique card will be rejected. My application for disability card was
rejected for this reason.

The railway concession card is a credit card size card issued by the
nearest Divisional Railway Manager,Commercial Department which is close to
your place of residence. You can use this card for online booking of
concession tickets for people with disability. If you dont have such card
then for getting concession tickets you have to visit the reservation
counter along with copy of railway concession certificate. In Mumbai you
can apply at CST or Mumbai Central DRM office. There is format of
application and one needs to submit along with self attested copies of
disability certificate, your address proof, Railway concession certificate.
Once your documents are verified then card will be issued in your name.
Validity of this card is dependent on your validity of your railway
concession certificate.

I hope this clears your doubts.

[AI] Registered Posting of Articles/Literature for the Blind and Surcharge on the same.

Subject: Registered Posting of Articles/Literature for the Blind and

Surcharge on the same.

To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in

Hi AccessIndians

Under Post & Telegraphs (P) Guide Rule 136/137, ‘Literature for the

Blind’ can be Registered Post Free subject to meeting the conditions

mentioned in these Rules e.g. weight limit, surface-mail only, etc.

(earlier the rules were P Guide 129/130).

https://www.indiapost.gov.in/VAS/DOP_RTI/PO_Guide_Part-1.pdf

The NAB Talking Book Library in its on-line internet document

www.nabindia.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/TBC_Terms_Conditions.docx

mentions : “To return the CD/CDs Postage-Free from your local Post

Office, by Registered Post, you need to write “ARTICLES FOR THE BLIND:

REGD. POST FREE UNDER RULE 136/137 P. & T. GUIDE” on the CD

Mailer/Mailers.”

For over 30 years, I (and another VI friend) have been regularly using

this facility for returning the CDs from NAB’s Talking Book Centre as

also returning Braille Books we get from Libraries such as the RNIB

National Library Service, United Kingdom. (UK post is via SEA-MAIL).

This March 2018, when attempting to post the Braille Books as usual we

were shocked to learn that we now have to pay a SURCHARGE. We have

been told that the postal system has just installed a new SOFTWARE

(termed ‘CSI’ ?). This software does not allow the Registration of

the Blind Literature unless a Surcharge is paid.

The postal staff are aware of the P Guide Rules 136/137. They are

also aware that we did not have to pay for Braille Literature

registered postage till date. But they are unable to process the

same since the new software does not allow it without the surcharge.

(In my case the surcharge was Rs600).

I have been regularly following up with my local post-office but they

always say the situation has not changed.

I will be lodging a written/on-line complaint to the postal

authorities but it would help to know if anyone else is facing this

issue and has anyone got a solution?

Looking forward to your reply and thanking you in advance for the same.

Pls suggest the alternative android App to recognise the indian currency notes.

 Hi
Seeing AI has now an update, it recognizes Indian currency.
To use it change the channel to currency and tab on button if it reads
dollar. Thereafter you get a chance to change to Indian currency from
 the
 default dollar.
Thereafter you keep the phone about 6 inches away from the currency,
 You
don't have to click anything else, it will use the back camera and

 the value.

Does RBI plan to give IPhones to all blind persons in the country

Seeing AI app runs only on IOS. There is no need forinternet to do this
 task.

Re: [AI] Independent tour: Sikkim tour with Bat Travels!

2018-06-17 Thread Shyam M. Sayanekar
Mr. Vamshi's discription is very atractive and tempting. I will surely give
a trial. In fact I have visited Sikkim on my own with relatives. But the
discription given of Bhat travel seams to be very exciting. Thanks a lot.

Dear friends,

I had just taken one more step in the direction of independent living
for blind, a tour alone to Sikkim, Indochina border with Bat travels.
Now I am in euphoria for not just completing my first tour alone, but
finding a new way of happy living with new bunch of friends!

I took off alone from Banglore airport having all the apprehensions as
it was my first time tour without family, friends or known people. How
should I find the cab at Bagdogra airport? What if other sighted
tourists are not ready to help me? Will I be left out on a few spots on
the tour? How will I have lunch in a new place? What if I need to go
to wash room? What if other sighted tourists are not interested in
talking to me? Will it be risky to depend purely on my white cane in
hilly places? Will I enjoy the picturesque beauty of Sikkim as a blind
tourist? Many more like this. But then, I thought its worth giving a
try. After all, life is all about trying things new. Isn’t it?

Day 0
Getting bonded
All the group of 8 arrived at Bagdogra airport. Two of us were blind
and others being sighted. Pleasant surprise was that Bat Travel team
of Divya and Ritu were there a day in advance to receive us! Couple of
hours after introductions, we found ourselves cracking jokes at each
others and pulling each others legs. We started to Gangtok comfortably
seated in two SUVs, good old bollywood music playing and I humming some
songs , more to show that I knew them than to sing well (smile). River
Teesta was along side us as if was showing us the way. A river is the
best friend for blind in nature as it makes sound to make us feel it.
Bat Travel team was describing the nature around us, the size and shape
of trees, height of mountains, how far and low is the river, the depth
of valley, colour of monkeys, a fox that we sighted etc. It was as good
as seeing everything. By the night, we checked into the hotel at
Gangtok and rested after dinner. And yes, each blind was accompanied by
a sighted in the room to orient us.

Day 1
We enjoyed a water fall, Sprinkled water on each other and had a few
snaps taken. Then we went to Enchey monastery, with Divya or Ritu
describing sculpture and paintings in detail, even letting us have a
tactile feel of the Buddhist sculpture, rare leaves, flowers etc.
Contrary to our personalities and the tour, we remained silent in
praying before lord Buddha with a monk chanting beside us. After that,
was the time for the most exciting part of the tour, a rope slide
between two mountain clifs, with a water fall beside us and water
flowing below us! A part of me was hesitant but the stubborn side of
me wanted to do it. I was carefully guided to the clif and was
explained how it would be functioning. Even the staff there ensured all
safety measures. But still, to be harnessed to a rope, and sliding from
one clif to another by holding the rope was one heck of an experience!
They even stop in the middle where we can leave the rope and wave in the
air. At that moment, it was a sense of achievement to think, what if I
can’t do certain things like sighted, here I am doing an adventure which
many sighted wouldn’t have done! After having a Sikkimmese lunch with
pasta, bamboo shoots, etc., we returned and rested at hotel.

Day 2
Time to touch China! Natulla pass! 14,000 feet height!
It was all the more tantalizing when we had to wait twice for permits to
reach there. With every passing mile up, the temperature kept dropping
and air freezing. I deliberately refrained from wearing jacket till we
reached there to see how it will be like, but only to loose the battle
with the weather as by then my hands also started paining. It was a
hike to the top, with either of the bat travel buddies or sighted
friend holding one hand and my white cane in the other. There were
steps, treacherous passes, snow passes, other tourists and what not, but
it was a great experience to use the white cane at such a place and
reach the peak. We could
