[AI] CES 2021 Innovation Award honouree could make the Apple Watch more accessible

Hi Access Indians,

 

We often think of touchscreen displays as one of the more accessible ways to
interact with our gadgets. But a variety of physical and cognitive
disabilities, including conditions like ALS, can make even using a
touchscreen nearly impossible. Enter a recent CES 2021 Innovation Award
honouree called the Mudra Band from Wearable Devices.

 

How does the Mudra Band work?

Working in conjunction with an Apple Watch, the Mudra Band uses a sensor to
detect electrical signals sent by your brain to your fingers. A
deep-learning algorithm then analyzes those impulses and maps them to a
corresponding finger movement. It sends that information to your Apple Watch
with the help of Bluetooth LE. You set the action each moment triggers. In
that way, your ring finger can activate Siri while your pinky can skip
songs.

 

When Wearable Devices, the startup that's behind the Mudra Band, first
pitched the device to Indiegogo backers, it did so by playing up the fact it
could let you use the Apple Watch without touching it with your non-watch
hand.

 

Are there any accessibility use cases?

The company has also been working on accessibility use cases as well. In one
instance, they built a proof of concept that allows ALS patients to quickly
type using a virtual keyboard. In another example, the company used the
wearable to give an IDF veteran whose injury left them with a heavily
clenched fist the chance to learn to play the piano.

Wearable Devices is working with universities in the US, Israel and Japan to

[AI] Samsung's TVs will be more accessible for people with vision or hearing loss

Hi Access Indians,

 

Samsung is working to enable its TVs to recognize sign language for commands
like "turn on the television."

What features will be available for people with hearing loss?

Samsung's TV lineup is about to become a lot more accessible for people with
low vision or hearing loss. The company said all of its 2020 QLED and Neo
QLED models will come with new features like being able to move captions to
avoid blocking other text on a video and the ability zoom in on a sign
language window to see it better.

"We don't want to exclude anyone," Byungho Kim, of Samsung's social
contribution centre in Suwon, said in a video during Samsung's event. "Our
technology is for everyone."

What features will be available for people with vision loss?

Along with "Caption Moving" and "Sign Language Zoom," Samsung also showed
off the ability to invert colours on a menu. It leaves the video as it is
but makes it easier for people who are low vision to see the menu options.
"It looks simple but to enable this technology, we had to start by
re-engineering the chipset," Samsung said. Its SeeColors feature lets people
who are colour blind see colours, and its Learn Remote Control feature that
verbally tells users what each button on the remote controls.

How much will the new TVs cost?

Samsung hasn't yet said what its 2021 TVs will cost, but it's likely they
won't come cheap. The lowest end Neo QLED for this year roughly equates to
last year's 65-inch Q80. That TV retails for $1,500 (US). Samsung hasn't
said if any of the features will come to its older televisions.

 

The accessibility news came along with a host of other TV-related
announcements from Samsung. The company unveiled a slimmer version of its
Frame TV that resembles a painting on the wall; new Neo QLED TVs that take
on OLED, come with solar-powered remotes and have a camera-based, AI virtual
trainer to critique your workouts; and new soundbars with subwoofer
microphones and Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. Samsung also said it's going
green when it comes to its TVs, including by making the packaging more easy
to re-use.

Along with being virtual, this year's CES - and the tech world in general -
could see some other changes. There's likely to be a focus on technology
that helps people in the current environment. For Samsung's electronics
business, that means innovations for people in the home, including its new
accessibility features.

[AI] How to enable FaceTime Eye Contact

FYI:

Without proper eye contact, conversations would look dull and meaningless.
Whenever we speak with someone, both people expect to maintain minimum eye
contact, at least to make the conversation a lot less awkward. But, it is
not always possible with video calls especially if one of them are visually
impaired like myself. The other person will feel like you are looking down
when you are actually looking at their face on your mobile screen.

Now FaceTime has a quick solution for that. It fakes your eye contact with
the other people on the call.

How to enable FaceTime Eye Contact

The eye contact feature is exclusively for FaceTime calls. You can enable
the option from your iPhone settings and works well on the iPhone models
later than iPhone X.

Open Settings on your iPhone.
Go to FaceTime.
Scroll down and toggle on the "Eye Contact" option.
Fake Eye Contact in FaceTime Calls

Once you enable the eye contact option in FaceTime, it will fake your
contact throughout the FaceTime calls. Whether you are looking at the
camera, your face, or the other person's face, it will seem as if you are
looking at their face to the other person.

Eye contact will work well for small eye movements. If you look far away
from the iPhone screen, it won't work as you expect. Also, some people may
find the fake eye contact feature creepy. Some may not like you "looking" at
their face along with the entire call.
