Just to let you know that I upgraded to kernel version 2.6.24-21-server today
using aptitude. I still get the same kernel panic behaviour. I am able to
suppress it with

I know it's a bit weird, but an X3 processor is a quad core with one processor
disabled. I chose it over a similarly priced quad core version for
environmental and running

It's got an AMD PHENOM X3 triple core processor.
I've done a sudo find . -type f -name .config from the root directory, but I
haven't found any files called .config.
