On my LG TX there are similar symptoms. From the login screen, shutdown
and hibernate works. From logged in to Gnome, nothing happens after the
text power off appears, when attempting to hibernate. This has been
like that since upgrading to 8.04, including since the latest kernel
update.

In Xubuntu hibernate works. (with the same present kernel)
The problem seems Gnome-related on my machine, and as noted above,
in Ubuntu hibernate works when not logged in, but not when logged in. I
have to make a correction too, shutdown at present always works.

For me, just adding rmmmod snd_hda_intel to the end of /etc/default/halt is
not enough.
Maybe I need to stop things using the driver. Will invistigate; does anyone
have a tip?

I had pulseaudio and mixer_applet2 running which prevented the
snd_hda_intel to be unloaded.
