Richard,
We have TSM under OS390 sharing STK silos with ADSM under AIX. across two sites.
We use the cross siting to write copy pools direct offsite.
We have a mixture of Timberline (3490) and 9840 drives within the silos.
The 9840s are used for the cross siting because of theit escon capability.
We are thinking about using TSM to backup our clients and have been told
that it will cost over AU$550 per client (about US$280). This seems extreme,
as it would be much cheaper to purchase a personal backup system
(Tape/CD-RW/Zip/etc) for our 700 machines than pay the price of a server and

We have an Exchange server running TDP v1.1.1. It's been backing up for
a year or so and someone noticed it has somewhere around 2.9TB of data
backed up. This shouldn't be because as far as we know it was set up to
only store 30 days with one 10GB Full done per day, and 4 60MB
incrementals
The only issue that I have with this response is that the path and file
name that I am having trouble with is 230 characters. That should be well
enough under the 255 character limit. I will try the USEUNICODEFILENAMES
parameter anyhow.

It goes further than this. SAN backups only do 1 stream on the output to

We had this same problem, and following the instructions in the readme
didn't solve it. If those instructions don't help you, you might try

Does any body out there in TSM land know the exclude statement for the
system object? TSM support told me it was BACKUPREGISTRY=no, but that it
could only be used in the client opt file. Does anyone know if there is a
command for this that can be used in a client option set?
Thanks,

Yes, we installed 4.2.1.7 today and it
fixed the license problem.

I will be out of the office starting 11/15/2001 and will not return until
11/26/2001.
I will respond to your message as soon as I return.
We will need 4.2.1.7 because it fixes license registration problem. In
4.2.1.6, you can only register a license file once. So, total of license
could register is 66. We would have problems when the clients exceed 66.
And the noncompliant message would flood our activity log.

Some clarifications:
Backuping up LAN Free to disk does require SANergy.
Parts of SANergy have NOT been incorporated into TSM.
SANergy allows access to a file system on a SAN drive
by multiple clients - the SANergy MDC coordinates access
to the file system; therefore multiple clients do not
License problems on 4.2.1.6 are only for AIX servers

I have a 4.1 client running W98 SE on a laptop against a 4.1.1.0 AIX server.
Since the user never really knows when the machine will be on the network
for a backup I leave the onus up to her and do not put it on schedule at
all. At any rate, every time the user initiates a backup via the GUI,
3590E1As ONLY write at the higher density. So when you reuse your old carts they will
get written at the higher density. The new drives can still read the lower density.
We are currently upgrading our AS400 platform from V4R4 to
V5R1.
Does anyone know what version the AS400 Tivoli API needs to
be in order to support this platform?

I take it to mean that any given FILE on the SAN device can be
written to by only one client at a time, but that many files (up
to the MOUNTLIMIT parameter) can be written to at once, meaning
the maximum number of clients writing simultaenously to the SAN
device is equal to the MOUNTLIMIT
You can use a product like Timbuktu or if you're running Win2K the Terminal

another machine.

Anthony, I agree, your suggestion is a good one.
One thing, though: for long file name support to work in 4.1,
USEUNICODEFILENAMES must be set to NO (not YES). If you do not explicitly
